Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by the X-Files, THE POLL

I hope you can handle the inevitable wild popularity of this very timely poll.

While inarguably uneven, this is much better than any mid-'90s compilation inspired by a TV show had any right to be. I only just realized while listening to it yesterday how many of the songs seem to conjure an air of biblical apocalypse rather than, y'know, a nighttime world filled with aliens and creepy crawlies. Which was an odd choice.

was very excited for vote for the superior single version of "walking after you" by foo fighters, forgot it's actually on the movie soundtrack

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:06 (five years ago) link

extremely powerful 90s vibes here

Ha, played the fuck out of this comp when it came out. It's probably 'Unmarked Helicopters'. They said it was a weather balloon

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:06 (five years ago) link

it's gotta be 'red right hand' in a landslide tho surely

i'm w/ tato, super hot AND weird!! (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:07 (five years ago) link

voting for the original theme because it's iconic, that's why

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:10 (five years ago) link

The Sheryl Crow track is probably the best thing I've heard from her. If she'd done more stuff like that I might've even bought one of her albums.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:16 (five years ago) link

I probably should've polled the tracks from both soundtracks since the one for the movie was much dicier and less deserving of its own poll. Oh well.

honestly in terms of '90sness this collection does rival my other favorite extremely '90s artifact the batman forever soundtrack

which, thank god, was polled here 11 years ago

Oh what could have been:

Artists such as Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Seal were approached to possibly contribute material. Although all three were admitted fans of the series, none were able to get involved in the project—Petty was unable to commit due to a tour, Springsteen was contractually tied to Sony Music Entertainment, while Seal was "snowboarding in South America or somewhere".[1]

Imagining the alternate universe version of this comp, featuring Candlebox, the Spin Doctors, and DMB.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:35 (five years ago) link

Oh wow, the Dirty Three version of the theme is dope!

I actually had this comp and think I mostly listened to 'Red Right Hand', which has now been retroactively ruined by Peaky Blinders.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:41 (five years ago) link

I only had the cassette so I never even heard the Dirty Three material (track zero on the CD, those cheeky bastids) until somewhat recently. It's v good. To think I might've gotten on board with them several years earlier than I did if not for my stubborn resistance to progress.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:46 (five years ago) link

Red Right Hand is the best here, but it wasn't written for this comp right?

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link

No, it was released several years earlier on Let Love In.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link

"Red Right Hand" for sure, but I can't remember if this is one of the alt versions that has appeared.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:59 (five years ago) link

I used to see this compilation in the racks during my very frequent trips to record stores back in the day and I remember thinking it was a naff idea for a compilation at the time. Still do.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:01 (five years ago) link

Seal was right to go snowboarding or whatever.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

it's a good idea, actually, and i know for a fact that seal regrets his decision to go snowboarding instead of contributing to this day

i'm w/ tato, super hot AND weird!! (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:03 (five years ago) link

No, it was released several years earlier on Let Love In.

Same year that it was used in The X-Files.

"Red Right Hand" for sure, but I can't remember if this is one of the alt versions that has appeared.

It was Scream 3 for which Cave re-recorded a new version.

steven, soda jerk (sic), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link

if I'm being honest with myself I think I like the Foos' cover better than Numan's original, if only because I heard the former first (on this comp of course)

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:42 (five years ago) link

The strange thing is that the DJ Dado version that became a big hit isn't on this soundtrack.

Siegbran, Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:47 (five years ago) link

Sorry to sic you, sic, but the comp was released two years after Let Love In and the song's employment on the show.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:49 (five years ago) link

...that’s what I said

steven, soda jerk (sic), Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

Sorry to have attempted to sic you, sic.

Soupy Slacks (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 March 2019 16:03 (five years ago) link

The best song on the comp is "Land of the Sun" by Skip Spence, which was his last (probably?) recording, was commissioned for this soundtrack and then rejected for being too creepy (at least that's the story)

It's on the More Oar tribute and Sundazed put it out on a 7"

loyalty to my late 90s self means a vote for soul coughing here. i also dug the foo fighters' number quite a bit, tho of course had no familiarity with the source material.
