Damn this song is so hot! Was this really a b side? (rhetorical question, ive got the single damnit) How many voices are on this song? Are they all just Prince at different speeds? What mixes are the best? Arto Lindsay did a cover, I know. Were there any other worthwhile covers? I looked up the lyrics online, and it says the line is "we can funk until the dawn" ?? This disappoints me tremendously. I thought he was saying "fuck".

Finally, if I put this song on a mix for a girl, would she slap me?

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

a friend of mine saw Chris Whitley cover it a couple years back. and that Covers Project site lists George Clinton (!) and Semisonic. i like when he says "make babies".

Al (sitcom), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on! At least answer my questions!

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM ARE YOU AFRAID OF SEX?

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Finally, if I put this song on a mix for a girl, would she slap me?

No, but she'd fuck you.

Someone put "Gett Off" on a tape for me once and it was as if Cupid had shot an arrow through my heart. "Erotic City" would be even better.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

we can funk until the dawn is typical Prince lyricism off course. Everyone's thinking fuck anyway. But what makes this song so hot? the bassline, the keyboard flute like sound, the deep dark voice, the lyrics. perfect.

sander, Monday, 18 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Dump (James McNew) did a lo-fi version on his Prince cover album, That Skinny Motherfucker with the High Voice. I enjoy that record, but his "Erotic City" isn't my favorite thing on there, and I don't think putting it on a mix would get you laid.

wl (wl), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

But I told you! I don't want to get laid, I want to get slapped!

I like the way it kinda reminds me of robots, but it reminds me of sex at the same time, and I think ROBOT SEX, which is obviously the hottest thing evah.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

love it. i think aphex twin had it in mind when he did 'windowlicker'

minna (minna), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

To me there's nothing robotic about it; it's sheer sex. Also search: Sheila E, "A Love Bizarre", Vanity 6... actually most of their songs are more funny than sexy but search 'em anyway.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

the whistly keyboard "doot-doo-doot-doo"'s are pure robot! especially with that beat. Of course, robots and sex are practically synonymous to me

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The George Clinton vers. was featured in PCU. One of The Greatest Films Of All Time.

jm, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

...according to Comedy Central

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

there are 2 versions of the song, one which says "fuck until the dawn" the other says "funk"

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

I once told someone that the "if we cannot make babies" line was about Prince being gay and then he was like "dude, you just totally ruined that song for me" and seemed genuinely depressed about it.

Also, this track mixes perfectly with "White Horse." And pretty much every DJ seems to know this so it's gotten to the point where if I hear one of those tracks in a club I can totally expect the other to follow.

Romeo Jones, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

If this is a B-side, why do I know all the words?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

it got a ton of radio play in the 80s

chaki, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

but i was more of an MTV kid than a radio kid.

i know this song from somewhere, but i don't know where!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:47 (seventeen years ago)

Because people love this song and one tends to hear it in various places at various times. Yeah.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

My local Jack-FM plays this, but it's been sanitized...so even if he's not singing "fuck," somebody sure thinks he is.

Tremendous record, BTW, in my Prince top 5.

The Deacon, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

I got my first kiss while listening to this in the back of the band bus.
One of my favorite songs ever.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno how old you are Whiney, but I originally knew all the words cuz, in the 2nd half of the 90s, Comedy Central used to play PCU after school all the time, in which P-Funk do a cover of it.

I was going to revive this thread the other day to say I think "Shockadelica" is a better Prince B-side but I don't want to get a mail bomb.

Emoja's 'Erotik City' has nothing to do with the Prince song but is always brought to mind when it is mentioned. I'm assuming the K was added so Prince wouldn't sue.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Sunday, 14 November 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

"White Horse" mixes well with EC, but Monifah's "Touch It" (a sexpot version of WH) is pretty much its thematic mirror. Its a wonder no one (to my knowledge) has done the obvious interweaving/booty call and response mash-up...
