In a Tampere dungeon lurks the best rock music of our time. And now it has its own thread. Let us celebrate two most excellent bands, and their supreme combination - dare you risk your mind in the Syntheosis?

A friend of mine was obsessed with the ‘zuzu for a while a couple of years ago. I have ‘Valonielu’ but not listened to it for ages.

I do quite like Kairon; IRSE! however.

michaellambert, Saturday, 6 April 2019 23:10 (six years ago)

Kairon are amazing as well, yes :) but they're not part of this collective I think. Happy to broaden this to all (good) Finnish psych-metal though...

imago, Saturday, 6 April 2019 23:23 (six years ago)

Kairon Irse share a guitarist with OP I believe

like him hate us? Sure you are. Its in the cool aid. (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 7 April 2019 00:10 (six years ago)

I'm bumping this because this is my album of the year, and because I want to talk about Marko Neuman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCR-OrN41E0

So this^ is probably my SONG of the year, a furious synthesis of vocal styles and coruscating guitars. Imagine my surprise to learn that Marko Neuman is responsible for EVERY vocal on the track! Look, here's its original live incarnation from Roadburn, who commissioned the piece (starts about 9/10 minutes into the video):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMw6iIxDEmE

It's all one guy! A quite unbelievable performance!

Not a surprise when you hear him talk about his favourite records though:

I met this girl at a bar and we ended up in my apartment. This was also back in the late 90s. It was late at night and we were sitting in the living room on the couch and I decided to put some music on. I turned off all the lights and put The Litanies of Satan in the player and turned the volume as loud as possible. After a while the girl started to freak out because of the vocals on the record and asked if I could change the music. I suggested that we should listen to the whole album and she started freaking out more and left. At that moment I realised that through art I want to have a similar impact on people like Litanies of Satan had on that girl.

imago, Sunday, 14 April 2019 09:14 (six years ago)

i don't understand guys who bring girls they don't like back to their apartment, shit man it's ok to go home alone!

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Sunday, 14 April 2019 14:21 (six years ago)

he liked her until she failed the Diamanda Test tbf

imago, Sunday, 14 April 2019 14:23 (six years ago)

if you take a girl you've just met home from a bar and your idea of a good time is listening to the litanies of satan with her you don't really like her

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Sunday, 14 April 2019 14:41 (six years ago)

if you listen to his performance on Wake Up The Possessor it's hard to argue he hasn't some of Galas' spirit, though...

imago, Sunday, 14 April 2019 14:43 (six years ago)

that's cool, i'm still not going out with him

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Sunday, 14 April 2019 17:55 (six years ago)

Been listening to DBR, especially Ritual IX. Enneargy has to be one of the best doom songs of all time, right? It's next-level. Such depth and lightness amongst the heft. Will be ploughing through the rest of the Dark Trilogy soon...great sunshine music

imago, Monday, 22 April 2019 12:13 (six years ago)

Yeah, that quote makes him sound like a massive dick

Duke, Monday, 22 April 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

But I'll still pick up this album

Duke, Monday, 22 April 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

Yeah, that quote makes him sound like a massive dick
― Duke, Monday, April 22, 2019 12:11 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Fortunately the other quote in the interview makes him sound way cooler:

I remember listening to this album on Sunday nights back in late 90s. Lying in my bed having a cigarette in one hand and a knife in the other hand. Those were beautiful moments.

"Wake Up The Possessor" is definitely the standout on the album so far.

enochroot, Monday, 22 April 2019 17:43 (six years ago)

DBR are SO satisfying, they're like a nine-course meal. Enneathan hits similar pleasure centres as GY!BE used to, except this is much better, at least to me now. The first part is just the most amazing rangy monster of a song, building to quite incredible intensity and then pushing on, further and further, as the guitarist gradually sets fire to the world.

I'm now listening to Entheomorphosis and finding it equally substantial. Most other modern doom can't hold a candle to this, for me. This is deeper, wilder and crazier, and it knows how to mix light and space with the heavy darkness in order to accentuate it

UPDATE

Vesperith! A female solo artist has been added to the Wastement circle! And it's good!

Also, there's an OP live album now! I'm listening to VKH! It kicks ass!

Her 2015 EP, Esoteros, is stunning. I have high hopes for her upcoming album.

Listening to the Vesperith now! Feels like it's a slow burner. Not a bad thing

It's more atmo than BM, which suits me just fine. I'm all for selenic Lisa Gerrard-esque Finns.

the preview track appears to have been a fake-out yes. but the atmospheres are good!

imago, Sunday, 24 November 2019 12:30 (five years ago)

actually this album is throwing me slightly - every track is very distinct! fourth track is absolutely where it's at, wow

imago, Sunday, 24 November 2019 12:38 (five years ago)

& in fact the whole second half of this appears to be magnificent

imago, Sunday, 24 November 2019 12:46 (five years ago)

I'm actually into this. This is quite good

Listened through a couple times this morning - seems like more of a refinement/streamlining than an escalation of any kind to me but still very very good.

Just put this on, it's definitely less metal (though still too metal for, say, my parents) but it's doing some cool hypnotic droney stuff that I enjoy.

am i crazy or are the harsh vocals on this some of the harshest they've done? like the first track just sounds demented.

Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 24 April 2020 09:36 (five years ago)

Okay, I absolutely love this. Way more industrial, esp in the second half, and intense than I expected, but it works. I also hear a ton of Circle influence, especially in "Taivaan portti" with all of that repetition.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 21:18 (five years ago)

lol when you bumped the Circle thread the other day I had to hold my tongue not to mention this

imago, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

Ha, yeah, that NWOFHM influence is certainly a big part of why I like this one as much as I do.

I'm discovering the record as I type, finding it really good, I like the spectrum of sound and the hypnotic quality, the way the synths and chimes sound as the rest is buried, creating this orchestral atmosphere.

weird, i want to like this and i can hear great stuff in there but - is it just me or is the mixing terrible? I keep turning up the volume to hear things better but it always sounds super muddy, as if it's playing from under a thick blanket (not in a good way)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 18 October 2024 08:02 (nine months ago)

Sounds pretty good on mine. what kind of system are you listening on?

beard papa, Friday, 18 October 2024 19:40 (nine months ago)

I got into Oranssi around the same time I first heard Pinkish Black, in 2014 I think... I had associated the two at the time, but not much later on. This one almost takes me back to that. The super distorted bass and drums which maybe give it that muddy sound you're hearing. I recently bought some nice studio monitors and the album sounds pretty great on them.

beard papa, Friday, 18 October 2024 20:11 (nine months ago)

I don't have too many touchstones in industrial black metal, but I generally like the mad claustrophobic atmosphere here. It sounds a bit like Arcturus or Ihsahn. I like how they alternate nervous angst, sense of interstellar doom, contemplation of the void. Fine trip down some glimmering abyss.
