Chicken Lips C/D

What do people make of this guy - downloaded some stuff the other day and it's real head-nodding house (as opposed to finger-clicking) which lends it a cool b-boy edge - early 80s post-punk regimental disco stomp, dubwise fx, ESG b-lines, just-bearable Material guitar stylings. not perfect, but i'd like to rock back and forth to it in a club.

anyone?

Jesus, we're the only two ILM fans in the world, it seems. I'd give up parts of my privates for a copy of the "Shoe Beast" EP.

Search "Shoe Beast", "Git Back", "Steppin'" singles and various remixes of other house songs. Most of Sir Drew.

Destroy... well the "Echoman" 2lp had a few good songs but kinda boring. Same with the latest full length.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I found the recent Chicken Lips album to be almost noxiously boring. Disco with every single fun part carefully removed.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

So, um nebbesh.. there it is. Get the singles, avoid the full lengths.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I see what you mean about the latest album - it's kinda ESG or disco not disco with the looseness and shambolicness taken out - that said, i don't think it's as awful as you say (although the keyboard solos are a bit oosh, but I s'pose not anymore than the Blockheads, who are ace I say - god, can i make my mind up?).

by the way, the latest entry on simon reynolds' blog is about muisc with the fun taken out.

"I see what you mean about the latest album - it's kinda ESG or disco not disco with the looseness and shambolicness taken out - that said, i don't think it's as awful as you say"

I may be exagerrating. I only listened to it once. It just struck me as being not nearly as good or as interesting as all the (fantastic) stuff it was supposed to be like. And everything went on far. too. long.

"by the way, the latest entry on simon reynolds' blog is about muisc with the fun taken out. "

Horsepower Productions or gabba garage? Either way I disagree. Lovely sounds and smashing stuff are both fun! But Extended Play neither sounded lovely, nor smashed stuff.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, if you can bug me and remind me several times, I'll digitize some of their finer 12" singles for you, as well as the Sir Drew stuff. I totally agree with you re Extended Play... but I don't need someone with your critically acclaimed reputation spreading bad word on somebody who, by chance, released the one bum thing in your presence. :)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah well that was the thing - I was surprised by how uninteresting it was b/c the copy on them from reliable sources had been so promising.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
So , what do you guys think of the DJ Kicks cd. I'm considering picking it up. Other DJ Kicks recommendations?

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's average. Listen to it on k7! before you buy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the mixing's awful, but there are some real gems on there that you're not gonna get anywhere else. i mean, that dennis bovell dub of the raincoats is heavy. and finally i get to hear a levan remix that justifies the adulation.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

t h a t b o v e l l d u b o f t h e r a i n c o a t s ?

can you tell me more?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

pleeeeeease?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a dub of animal rhapsody which turns it into some freaky orchestral wheel-up disco tune. it's ace - i think you can get the unmixed version on the vinyl version. bovell is a fucking genius man, i have to get that pressure sounds re-ish.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

So, have I just been out of it or have i missed the connection between DJ Kicks and CHicken Lips? Is he the the guy that's not Sir Drew and was in Atletico? I just listen to the 12"ers in the store, like 'em, and buy 'em. 12" Dance artistes are really hard to get info on via online.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Kicks is a series on K7!, and Chicken Lips are 3 guys as far as I know. A British nu-disco group, like Metro Area but housier.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

And less shit.

They used to be Bizarre Inc of "Playing With Knives" fame.

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

whyyyyyyyyyyyyy waste your time!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

chicken lips IS sir drew, plus another 1/3 of bizarre inc. plus some new guy.

speaking of sir drew i saw a two disc Cut La Roc mix in a used CD store the other day. should i buy it? this is it

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

STILL looking for the "Shoe Beast" EP... :(

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
what's the new album like, then? anything left over after all the side projects and remixes?

guns to deal with vodka (haitch), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

that new album being making faces.

on the side projects: haven't heard an emperor machine track I didn't like. the big two hundred record was pretty good too.

guns to deal with vodka (haitch), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

the (most recent?) goat dance 12" is incredible! i don't have a lot more to say about it than that. sparse chunky disco space funk. reminds me of talking heads for some reason (maybe if maurice fulton produced them).

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

The new album is fucking awful.

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

the new album isn't necessarily awful, but it's not really what i was expecting. it's barely disco. it's more funky 70s soft rock. i also can't really compare it to their old singles because i haven't heard them.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

there's definitely some Sting in the album

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

or alan parsons

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

"sexy sweet cow/shake those udders"

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

also, what the fuck is up with "i know that you may go mental/that's ok because you're oriental"?! hah.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

"Without Sound" is pretty great, I think.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

"i know that you may go mental/that's ok because you're oriental"
