I've been struggling to find records that really blow me away this year, and this seems to be doing the trick, so I think it deserves its own thread. Couldn't find much discussion on ILx about Lafawndah aside from a few votes for a collaboration with Midori Takada, which I will have to seek out, but in the meantime anybody got more info on her?
From her bandcamp blurb: "Lafawndah’s journey to her current incarnation as a devotional pop polymath has wound as unpredictably as her compositional style. Her traversing of musical and artistic milieus has been defined by a freedom of tone, surrealist sense of space, and assured manipulation of formal and psychological tension"

Nick (1/2 of Teengirl Fantasy) produced a bunch of these tracks, I think? He's very talented. I like this a lot better than her older stuff, tbh. Feels more assured.

I definitely think more of ILX needs to listen to this.

It's in my 'to listen to' pile on Spotify! However, so are many other things :(

this is great - like Kelela but actually good. Parts of this make me think specifically of Bjork's "Hidden Place" too.

This is good but think I prefer the cuts with no or only intermittent beats, i.e. "Vous et nous", "Joseph" and the title track.

Listening to this now after hearing a track in DJ Haram's RA mix, really nice. Kinda reminds me of Glasser but waaay better.
(also saw in looking it up that it got a pretty brutal pfork review)

Bumping because it's fantastic and everyone really should be all over this album

Ha, I missed your previous bump. It's how I felt about this record all last year - why are more people not crazy about this?

She released a new (short) album last month, The Fifth Season. Have yet to listen to it. There’s a video for “Le Malentendu”, featuring Lala &ce:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDX8eXG3cqs

OMG is this based on the NK Jemisin trilogy? Because that would be amazing!
(Also, shame on Spotify Hipster Boyfriend for not notifying me of this.)

Looks like it is inspired by NK Jemisin, yeah. The two new tracks I've listened to are very very beautiful but not quite doing it for me in the way the last album did. Will have to spend more time with it.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 15:34 (four years ago)
Yeah, "The Stillness" is definitely Jemisin.
I really liked You, At The End - but I also recognised it because I think Spotify Hipster Boyfriend did play it for me a while back? It's not as immediate as the last album, but I'm still enjoying it.

this is exactly the direction I didn't want :(
