So very awful, the whole lot of them. So very, very awful.

I KNOW YOU! FAMILY MAN!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously though, jesus, David -- ulcers much?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Ive heard a lot of them, and seen some on TV, and they were just a huge disapointment. They're just really boring and unfunny.

David Allen, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

oh come on. He's an ok stand up comic (and don't pretend that aint what he is. Anybody who talks about air travel constantly...). He rambles, but I enjoy his rants about stupid people as much as anybody's this side of David Cross.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

He was excellent in the Jackass: The Movie.

David Cross, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Rollins as a comic. As a poet, he's even (unintentionally?) funnier.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 05:44 (twenty-three years ago)

never really found anything to like about his music, but i actually really enjoy his 'talking' performances...he has a lot of bizarre tour stories, and a lot of unremarkable stories that he makes entertaining through his animated delivery, and he shows himself to be a lot more self-deprecating and level-headed than you might expect...there are parts of Think Tank that i defy you not to get a laugh out of.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first four albums are the best, especially Human Butt. "Donate Your Bodies to Science, You Fools!" is probably the best of all his bits.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, Wait.. David, you saw ads for Rollins spoken word albums on TV? What kind of punk rock TV do you watch?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The schtick used to be somewhat amusing, but it just gets progressively worse. His last spoken release was simply atrocious. Come on, RITE-AID jokes? Urgh. Make him stop, please.

JS Williams (js williams), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Though I'm not the hugest fan of Eye Scream or anything, most of Sweatbox was pretty good.

"..Fuck Everyone, Drugs: Yes, Kill the parents, kill the kids..."

C'mon, that's on the money.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

oh Sweatbox is great...esp. that story about getting stuck on the autobahn..."it's fucked out, man...it really wonders me"

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Think Tank was excellent, and everything else I've heard has been at least enjoyable.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

And he's not gay.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I didnt see ads, I saw concert footage of him doing it live, on Comedy Central.

And also, Anarchy TV.

David Allen, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I wld like to hear, but not own, the rec he made w/ Charles Gayle.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

You think Ian MacKaye ever looked at Henry Garfield and said, "You, my friend, will host an extreme car wrecking show?" http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/fmc/bio/hosts.html

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Rollins as a comic. As a poet, he's even (unintentionally?) funnier.
Yeah. When he tries to be funny, he emits unintended earthy profundity. When he tries to be deep, serious poet-guy, he is accidentally hilarious. I can't hear the phrases "warn torn filth machine" or "porno-fueled rape addict" without cracking up laughing.
I think the "Bummer Trilogy" ("Get in the Van", "Black Coffee Blues" and "Everything" *) got all the pompous seriousness out of his system, and the last two albums ("Think Tank" and "A Rollins in the Wry") have actually been pithy comedy albums. **

* = Best line == "Drive by shooting? WHERE?!"
** = These two rekkids both have alot of "I dig gay people, but I'm not gay myself" kinda stuff goin on in them. And it makes me wanna whip out "Mob Rules" by Sabbath. (You have to hear the record to get the joke.)

You think Ian MacKaye ever looked at Henry Garfield and said, "You, my friend, will host an extreme car wrecking show?"
Probably, yes. Think about it. If Hank wasn't a punk rock singer he'd have only two other jobs that would fit his personality:
1) Demolition Derby Driver
2) Serial Killer

He only gets to exercise the bottom choice if somebody dies on the show.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ah. but see, the word "host" is key there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

that's so weird that this thread is here. i woke up not long ago and in my dream i had called henry. i invited him out to some party in soho (london) but he didn't remeber who i was and i hung up on him.

i enjoyed think tank too but you just can't take him seriously, that's all.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. He's too OLD to actually DRIVE the demolition derby cars nowadays (him being an aging alternative icon and such) but just the hosting is close enough.
Side thread: Here's a thought. Get rid of all those other bozo sports commentators who do NFL football nowadays and lets have just Dennis Miller and Hank Rollins doing the play by play.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The main problem Ive found in his albums is how middle of the road he is. Very, very P.C. all the way through. I mean, he actually makes fun of the KKK.

David Allen, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

'cuz its fun! If you can't laugh at pointy-headed ninnies, who can you laugh at?
Think of how their dressed, fercrissakes! At least neo-nazis have better uniforms, and as dumb as neo-nazis are, at least they didn't say to themselves "hmmm...if I put a bedsheet over my head maybe people will think I'm a ghost and get scared."; Even the cast of Scooby Doo isn't that stupid.
I've always wanted to dissect a KKK member just to see if they actually have a central nervous system or not.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

While I wasn't pissed that he mocked the KKK in that Comedy Central special, I did think that sequence was particularly flabby and uninspired. For Henry, it seems that spoken-word is stand-up comedy without the tight structure. His bits can be slack, but I do feel he understands the germ of what makes something notable better than most comedians, even if he refuses to work it like a true entertainer.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect he ad-libs everything. It might not hurt him to rehearse his routine. (That wouldn't hurt his band, either.)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"And it makes me wanna whip out "Mob Rules" by Sabbath. (You have to hear the record to get the joke.) "

oh shit i totally forgot about that...classic
