A bit off-topic, but a childhood friend of mine went in big for the whole evangelical thing after we more or less grew apart, and that also hooked him into extreme right wing politics. He was one of the few people I personally knew from school who made it clear they voted from Trump on 2016 election day, but I didn't realize how deranged his worldview had become until he actually trashed a news report on Richard Spencer for using the term "white hate" - like everything actually important about that story didn't register a single word from him, he was only angry about that phrase as if "white hate" was inherently racist towards whites, and from his reasoning, I could only guess it was some Fox News bullshit he swallowed whole. That was around 2017, the last time I thought of Spencer.

this is one of the things about him that's both hilarious and pathetic, and defines him imo -- he desires the imprimatur, he needs a label or a publisher to be vouching for him: it's really important to him (cf. his wanting, and getting, Penguin Classics to publish his autobiography, an aesthetic desire too to be sure, but there's more in there). he's not an artist for whom having made the art and put it out into the world is enough, not even if it makes money that way. he needs the organs of industry to tell him "we believe in you."

this is true but it also goes beyond that for Morrissey - he also needs to be at the table so that he can flip it over and storm out in a huff when he inevitably sours on the relationship, it's critical to his self-image to have that love/hate acceptance/rejection dynamic.
