Some say giving albums a numbered rating is a cold way of looking at music. How can a number sum up how music hits you? They're probably right, but I'm still addicted to rating albums. I always mentally award every record I hear a mark out of 10. So, here's a list of the next few albums on my shopping list. Rate what you've heard, and explain why if you wish!

Susuma Yokota - The Boy and the Tree
Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider
Bedhead - Beheaded
The Posies - Frosting on the Beater
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives
Dinosaur Junior - Bug
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Magnetic Fields 10, to be honest. I listen to it all the time and have done for nearly 2 years. RTX 8, though I hope it isn't yr first.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

In order:

8, 5 (just don't get them), haven't heard it, 7, 6 (lovely closing track), 10 (their masterpiece, as Simon R and I are probably alone in thinking), 8, 6, 9.

angelo (angelo), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Only heard Good Morning Spider for the first time last night (just bought it as I'm going to see them next Sunday).
On first listen, not as good as the other two, but 7.

Dinosaur Jr - Bug 9.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Simon R's fave from Trux is Cats And Dogs.

David Gunnip, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

And I thought an awful lot of people thought "TI" was their best. Not me, I stick w/SLU even though it's a compilation.

Sparklehorse-8 (easily their best and only must have), Royal Trux-5 (ok drugged out mood music gets old fast), Magnetic Fields-9 (first two discs so good I have to forgive the genre parodies that mussy up disc 3).

The rest I haven't heard in their entirety but I love Freak Scene and Radiation Vibe has grown on me.

Sparklehorse-7
The Posies-9
Dinosaur Jr.-9
Magnetic Fields-7

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Susuma Yokota - The Boy and the Tree - I don't have this!
Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider - I think I have this, it's a bit boring, kinda like Grandaddy and Kingsbury Manx, I'd give it a 3.
Bedhead - Beheaded - I have WhatFunLifeWas, and I don't like it much, so this is probably a 4
The Posies - Frosting on the Beater - Not heard
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne - It's okay, six
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives - Dunno, not heard
Dinosaur Junior - Bug - Why is this in here? Dinosaur Jr are rock, 10.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - I loved this record for a year and more, so 9
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs - Not heard it.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Frosting and GMS get 9's, but mostly for sentimental value and to represent for 2 alltime favorites, although realistically they probably deserve more like 7 or 8 tops....aeroplane is good but doesn't need my support...the rest ehhh although i'll say yeah for Dinosaur

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider: 3. I don't understand why a lot of critics are nutty about him/them.
Bedhead - Beheaded: 5. Decent, but I haven't listened to Bedhead since the The New Year started putting out stuff.
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne: 9. One of those crystal-clear guitar-pop albums that's so simple and obvious you'll want to smack yourself in the head with a 2x4 for not making it yourself.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea: 10, nuff said.
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs: 8. Impressive, and includes some stone cold Stephin Merritt classics, but there's a lot of filler and a couple of total clunkers that have been annoying me lately.

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Only heard Magnetic Fields, and that gets a solid 8 - should perhaps be called 47 Love Songs, but a. that doesn't have the requisite quasi-sexual chutzpah, and b. I'm thinking it's a bit churlish to moan about a coupla "clunkers" (nice word!) when there's so much quality in there.

Oh, I've heard Bug but not since it came out...I reckon it's a 7.

Mummy, what's a Bedhead?

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider - 7 out of 10
Bedhead - Beheaded - 6 and a half out of 10
The Posies - Frosting on the Beater - 8 out of ten
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne - 7 out of ten
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives - 4 out of ten
Dinosaur Junior - Bug - 6 out of ten
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - 8 out of ten
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs - 8 and a half out of ten

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah, is there noone bold enough to hate 69 Love Songs, then? I can't claim to, since I've only heard enough songs to be readily nonplussed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

so far...

Susuma Yokota - The Boy and the Tree (8)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Susuma Yokota - The Boy and the Tree - 7 wonderful ambientness
Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider - 1 mumbling sad no point
Bedhead - Beheaded - 6 not their best
The Posies - Frosting on the Beater - 9 a near classic of power pop
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne - 8 almost as good
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives - 2 for die hards, heroin-induced sonic madness
Dinosaur Junior - Bug - 10 whoa, man, classic.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - 10 best album of the 90s
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs - 6 lotsa filler, but that's the point?

Winslow (winslow), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider (6) ... it's probably better than that, but I'm never compelled to take it off the shelf & listen.

Bedhead - Beheaded (6) ... my sister has been borrowing my copy for the past several years. I haven't asked for it back, but probably should one of these years.

The Posies - Frosting on the Beater (9) ... wonderful, their best album. Every time I listen I find a new favorite song.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (2) ... I just cannot stand his flat nasal drawl.

Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (5) ... too much filler to justify the price and time investment.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Is 69 Love Songs going to be one of those records that every host is going to cue up in 2040 and say, "Remember the days..."? Because, like, I don't want to be out of the retirement community loop, but that album seemed like a big folly to me.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"How can a number sum up how music hits you?"

Agree with this wholeheartedly. Except when it comes to that particular Royal Trux album, which hits me as ZERO ZERO ZERO. What an overrated piece of garbage.

Paula G., Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider = 7 (Its good but could have been better.)
Dinosaur Junior - Bug = 7 (8 if your buying Your Living All Over Me at the same time as both are grate! Otherwise if your just a passing fan get Fossils for the superb Cure cover (Just Like Heaven) to go with 'Freak Scene' and two of the better songs from Your Living All Over Me)
Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs = 10 the pure fun and giggle value makes up for any filler complaints I have.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

69LS 10. The others - why bother?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotta be the only "critic" on the board never to have heard 69 Love Songs and I gotta say that I've got no real burning desire to, either.

Posies gets 9, Fountains 7 or 8.
Dinosaur Jr gets 8.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Twin Infinitives - 8.8
In the Aeroplane over the Sea - 6.8

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 30 September 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Do people actually listen to Twin Infinitives on a regular basis? Or even more than three times? I can't hear the songs through all the noise

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Saturday, 30 September 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, although I can understand why someone might find this hard to believe. I don't think it's an album that resolves to reveal songs behind the chaos (like, say, US Maple), though I do get the riff of Jet Pet running through my head from time to time.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 1 October 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

susuma - 7
