3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good set!
7 June 2019
Format: Audio CD
This one of several 100 track compilations that Now thats what I call music are starting to release and most of them are pretty good.
I'm more of a soft rock than a hard rock fan but I thought I would get this as there are enough decent tracks to make it worthwhile and I'm an avid collector of compilations anyway!
I have to say I don't think this is as good as their previous 100 power Ballad set https://www.amazon.co.uk/NOW-100-Hits-Power-Ballads/dp/B07N88JCJC/ that had a slightly better selection on it in my opinion, in fact there are even a few tracks from that one duplicated here!, but its good value and for the sheer amount of material you can't really grumble!
There are a few fillers on here that I feel we could have done without, Barracuda by Heart being one.
Plenty of great songs on here though, Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, the full length version of Bat out of hell by Meatloaf, stay with me by the Faces, Black Betty by Ram Jam etc.
All in all not a bad set, look forward to their next 100 track compilation!

10. You Really Got Me – The Kinks
11. Like A Rolling Stone – Bob Dylan
18. More Than A Feeling – Boston
21. Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple
23. Barracuda – Heart
27. Just What I Needed – The Cars
32. Life’s Been Good – Joe Walsh
38. Since You Been Gone – Rainbow
47. Maggie May – Rod Stewart

My short list. I'm going to vote for "Since You've Been Gone" mostly just because it's the only one I never hear on the radio this side of the Atlantic. I don't think I ever heard it until I saw River. I do love the song.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:02 (six years ago)

heh, it's the only Rainbow song I ever heard on the radio (occasionally) it may have been used on adverts too

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

I've been hearing a fair bit of 90s stuff on "classic rock" radio these days, so the mishmash that is this track list isn't that odd to me. Still, voted Dylan over Chuck or Rod and (like an actual CR radio playlist) I'd like to flush about half of these songs down the toilet.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:17 (six years ago)

The book I use to teach guitar to beginners jumps around between Booker T and the MGs, the Rolling Stones, Rush, Weezer, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Green Day, Nirvana, Bon Jovi, ... in the first few pages.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:20 (six years ago)

When classic rock first started the tracks they played were about 5 years old right?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:31 (six years ago)

The first time I heard the term "classic rock" -- applied to a radio format and otherwise -- was in 1986 (WCKG in Chicago). They were playing Foreigner and Loverboy songs from 3 or 4 years prior, sometimes with the DJ saying, "It doesn't have to be old to be a classic!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:36 (six years ago)

70% of these are 'hit the button for another station' for me. 20% are 'leave the station where it is, but pretty much ignore.' The remaining 10% are 'TURN IT UP, MAN!!!'

The Boys Are In Town
La Grange
Black Betty
Barracuda
Just What I Needed

Voting Thin Lizzy.

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:51 (six years ago)

There was a period -- actually, most of the late '80s and '90s -- when the "LaGrange" heard on "classic rock" stations was the awful-sounding '80s remix, with triggered electronic drum samples.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

been digging maggie mae lately, so that's the one

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:01 (six years ago)

I don't have the facts to back this up, but I always thought that the Classic Rock radio format emerged out of the success of the Big Chill soundtrack.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:34 (six years ago)

Easy poll.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:39 (six years ago)

Kinks.

Valentijn, Friday, 14 June 2019 20:41 (six years ago)

But the Big Chill soundtrack was mostly Motown and blue eyed soul that classic rock radio doesn't play. And that was 1983. My local album rock station moved from progressive rock to a far more formatted classic rock playlist by about 1977. Look up radio consultants Burkhart/Abrams if you're interested. xp

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:46 (six years ago)

What a rubbish CD

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:48 (six years ago)

xp

Right. I think I'm conflating Classic Rock with the kind of "oldies" stations that played things like Motown and 60s one-hit-wonders in the 80s and early 90s. Those stations don't seem to exist anymore (except maybe on satellite radio), unlike Classic Rock, which is deathless.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:51 (six years ago)

I actually worked at a station for a while that identified as "Classic Hits" versus "Classic Rock," so they did actually mix some Motown and Three Dog Night in the playlist, trying to split the difference between "Oldies" and "Classic Rock," and I do think The Big Chill may have been at least tangentially an inspiration. (They didn't last long, and switched to Hard Rock within a couple years.)

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Friday, 14 June 2019 20:58 (six years ago)

6. Edge Of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks
9. The Boys Are Back In Town – Thin Lizzy
10. You Really Got Me – The Kinks
11. Like A Rolling Stone – Bob Dylan
12. Johnny B. Goode – Chuck Berry
13. Ace Of Spades – Motörhead
15. La Grange – ZZ Top
18. More Than A Feeling – Boston
21. Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple
22. All Right Now – Free

one of these and i actually think i'm gonna go w/Free, it's got a great riff and holds back just enough and is one of the ultimate driving songs.

omar little, Friday, 14 June 2019 20:58 (six years ago)

we (UK) never had classic rock radio growing up at all but there was plenty of oldies stations playing the 50s/60s stuff but digital radio has brought with it a lot of rock/classic rock/modern rock radio and oldies stations were left to die on medium wave.
I think the traditional oldies stations dont go back beyond the 80s now

Of course it does. Its aimed at UK dads as a fathers day present. But dads didn't have classic rock radio in the UK to grow up with. So all sorts of crap is picked.

Looks like this is a UK only box set which is explains some non-canon choices for US stations.
This is probably a stupid question, but is there commercial "classic rock" radio in the UK similar to what we have here?

I thank the Lord I didn't grow up with Classic Rock Radio tbh.

I don't remember the oldies stations he mentions though.

Yeah I saw that post but wasn't sure if that meant the UK was entirely free of this concept.

It was for most of the history of popular music radio in the UK.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 15 June 2019 20:36 (six years ago)

Clyde 2 in the 90s used to have a thing where every day they would play 3 from Elvis and 3 from The Beatles

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Monday, 17 June 2019 12:53 (six years ago)

Never listened to Clyde much tbh. Apart from Tiger Tim, Frank Skerritt and Mr. Abie. *joek*

I voted for "Like A Rolling Stone", which I think says more about my current disdain for classic rock than any particular love for Dylan.

For all his other talents, I don’t buy Dylan as a rock guy

I'm almost the opposite: I generally find him uninteresting on acoustic guitar and harmonica but the band on "Like a Rolling Stone" sounds so good and grooves so well and Dylan's rhymes and flow dazzle when they support and propel him.
