Mr. Daniel, you can aim your guitar at me anytime.

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:13 (six years ago)

i’m starting to believe that “Inside Out” is Spoon at its peak. i even like two other songs more on They Want My Soul but this song seems like their crowning achievement to this point. it’s a song that doesn’t sound like any other song in their catalog and is also their best video. i also think that album was to new when ILM did it’s Spoon poll but think it would be Top 5 easily if it was redone today. i’m quite interested to see where it ends up in the final tally for this poll.

I've told this story: I was hot for him until I saw him at the Chipotle line wearing cargo shorts at Pitchfork Festival in July 2008.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:17 (six years ago)

cargo shorts doesn't do it for you?

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:20 (six years ago)

because Chipotle is pretty good at times.

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:20 (six years ago)

Cargo shorts are Bush II era unless you have children or work at Home Depot.

Gotta go for the title track.

Simon H., Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:31 (six years ago)

Yeah same, Cherry Bomb a close second.

nate woolls, Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:32 (six years ago)

i've also told this story, but one time b daniel walked into a cd/game/dvd store i worked at, a few hours before their show a block or so away. he walked straight to the Spoon section, checked to see what was there, and walked straight out

we didn't have anything good so i totally understood

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:44 (six years ago)

what kind of shorts did he wear

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 June 2019 00:49 (six years ago)

iirc he wore tight pants and looked pretty great.

None of my most favoritist Spoon tracks are on this... guess it emphasizes their “punchier” stuff? I do like “Do You,” as far as late-period Spoon goes.

I get that they don't wanna give any money to Elektra, but the lack of Sneaks songs on a 'best of' is infuriating to this fan.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:54 (six years ago)

it's not really for fans is the reasoning

Your discography has a lot of greatest hits contenders. Was it hard paring the songs down to a single release?
My first idea was to do a much bigger one — it was hard for me to narrow 'em down, for one thing and I wanted to do some rarities and B-sides. It was pointed out to me that that approach would be better for people that already know the band, so why not make a single disc that's geared towards people that maybe know a song or two. We struggled to fit all 13 songs on there, which is a lot for a disc. It was about picking the cream of the crop, really.

Why isn't there anything on this album that predates Girls Can Tell?
Those records were definitely not our most popular — they were very unsuccessful (Laughs). That would happen on a different type of compilation

I never got this thinking - why take into account the relative popularity of the records at the time of their release if the comp is geared towards ppl who don't know the band in the first place? It's all gonna sound the same to them, it's not like someone would hear "Advance Cassette" in that tracklist and go "whoa, this is clearly an early song from one of their low-selling records, WTF"

One Eye Open, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:28 (six years ago)

i wouldn't care if they called it a "sampler" or something instead of a "best of"

na (NA), Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:30 (six years ago)

Reminds me of an interview I heard with Mick Jagger from when they reissued Exile where he expressed confusion abt why anyone would want a reissue since it didnt have any hits.

Anyway title track, obv. Also Spoon's best music video.

i mean i don't care that much to start with but

Everything Hits. By far my favorite of the bunch presented here, though there are others (especially from KtM and GaGaGaGaGa) that I like more.

I assume he’s thinking that the records weren’t popular because the songs didn’t “connect,” and still wouldn’t connect even if they were featured on this CD geared for Starbucks purchases or whatever (does Starbucks still sell CDs at the register)?

Consider the coconut (morrisp), Thursday, 27 June 2019 17:31 (six years ago)

I mean I don’t necessarily endorse that view, but it does seem like they chose very “casual–listener-friendly”tracks for this comp, and the early songs do have a certain “‘90s indie-rock sound” that may be offputting to casual listeners.

Everything Hits, followed by Cherry Bomb. I wish they'd included something like Ghost of You Lingers, Paper Tigers, Out Go the Lights. As it is it's mostly just their top 10 streaming songs repackaged.

I thought they/Merge got all of Series back, so including something like Advance Cassette or Reservations should've been easy.

KPH, Thursday, 27 June 2019 23:05 (six years ago)

I may have told this story on ILX one time but BD used to sleep with an intern I worked with back in the day (2001-2004? era, def pre-cargo-shorts, more of a tight jeans and jacket look at the time). He'd call her up whenever he was in town and put her on the list to the show (she +1'd me once). She was pretty open & non-chalant about it, but was surprised I knew who he was as I don't really talk about music in the office... and I guess I don't look like a "Spoon fan" haha.

billstevejim, Friday, 28 June 2019 02:36 (six years ago)

xxp you're right, you didn't, though i think that is of a piece with the lionization of the period, which seems pretty reflexive to me—based on old memories of indie rock glory, the trv3 kvlt sound that repels yer casual 00s commodified npr-rock fan

j., Friday, 28 June 2019 02:36 (six years ago)

"I Summon You" sounds like good Nick Lowe.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 June 2019 02:42 (six years ago)

I put together a Spotify playlist of their singles (that are available on Spotify anyhow) and... maaaaaaaan, were they ever terrible at picking singles up to maybe GGGGG when they did that indie trifecta of “Underdog,” “Cherry Bomb” and “Don’t you Evah”. Like there’s the occasional hit in there, but it’s no wonder they didn’t do a “Standing on the Beach”-style singles collection here.

I know we did a Spoon poll, but it’s be interesting to see what everyone’s CD-80 would look like. Not a lot of consensus, I bet. (The CD-80 was a fun format; also has the advantage unlike the 90-min mixtape of translating nicely into 2xLP for a fantasy comp)

Una Palooka Dronka (hardcore dilettante), Friday, 28 June 2019 02:45 (six years ago)

Don’t You Evah, because it was the gateway drug, and also it’s a cover and yet somehow quintessentially Spoony.

ts: willingly listening to spoon vs. willingly consuming chipotle vs. willingly wearing cargo shorts

budo jeru, Friday, 28 June 2019 06:13 (six years ago)

Totally get the starting with GCT argument though - much as I love Waiting For The Kid To Come Out, and have listened to and enjoyed Sneaks loads, they feel like a different band to me, somehow. Like the Spoon identity, DNA, USP whatever only started with GCT. Also, this is so obviously geared up like a 60s / 70s best of - pre-CD, 45 minutes, just the big songs. It’s like Sly & The Family Stone or something.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 28 June 2019 06:18 (six years ago)

Don’t You Evah, because it was the gateway drug, and also it’s a cover and yet somehow quintessentially Spoony.

Yesterday I was going to say that it's the least essential track on gax5!

The Pingularity (ledge), Friday, 28 June 2019 07:37 (six years ago)

Ended up voting for the title track for sentimental reasons but yeah, this is hard.

pomenitul, Friday, 28 June 2019 08:00 (six years ago)

Since I generally prefer later period and pop (as opposed to groove) spoon, it's between Do You and Cherry Bomb, the former a great mix of understated pathos and the incredibly goofy 'do do do's.

The Pingularity (ledge), Friday, 28 June 2019 08:54 (six years ago)

When people talk about 'modern' Spoon as sounding notably more accessible or easier to connect with or w/e, I honestly dont really hear the difference that much? (Aside from Telephono, which is its own thing and v much of its time obv.) Like from Sneaks onward, theyve basically been deploying a few difference combinations the same basic tools and sounds. The new song "No Bullets Spent" wouldnt sound out of place on Girls Can Tell (aside from the synth-vox intro), and bside of the 7inch is "Shake it off", a Sneaks-era track that to my ears could pass for a new track to my ears.

For me the big sonic change was with Gimme Fiction, when the production got noticeably more full and fussy and busy, but even that they reigned in pretty quickly. To my ears they dont seem to have made any big moves or changes in the direction of accessibility aside from that. Rockers like "Rent I Pay" or "Trouble Comes Running" sound like they could have come out at any point over the last 20 years imo. I dont really hear a big divide in the sounds of their eras like the Flaming Lips or whoever

One Eye Open, Friday, 28 June 2019 16:45 (six years ago)

The only exception to that for me would be when I first heard "The Underdog", which seemed like startlingly obvious licensing-bait, even for a band that was having a commercial moment like they were at the time. Maybe it makes me sound like a 90s trve kvlt lol old guy or whatever but that Glass Houses shit can gtfo

Don’t You Evah, because it was the gateway drug, and also it’s a cover...

Huh, you learn something new on ILM every day.

Don't get the reverence for the early stuff. The only time I saw them live was on the Sneaks tour, and they didn't make much of an impression, other than BD's comment that they increased the running time of Car Radio "because the A&R guy told us to, and we want to play ball!" It wasn't until "Everything Hits At Once" that I started to get into them, and I feel like they didn't peak until about 15 years into their career (though that said, they've been very consistent since Girls Can Tell).

enochroot, Friday, 28 June 2019 18:21 (six years ago)

They've been remarkably consistent for almost 20 years. I get why X would chose Y over another album but not why he or she would get hot under the collar about it.

i don't have a review of the show itself as i missed the whole thing. we had issues getting to this place. so instead, i will talk about the next band that played before Beck. i think this is all ILM fault for jading me with mediocre bands. Cage the Elephant are not a good band but the kids seem to love them and Beck is not a good pairing but more on that later. the lead singer of Cage has a lot of charisma. he looks and acts like Mike Jagger. it was such a beautiful night in Southern California last night probably around 75 degrees. he came out with layer and layer of clothing on. so for the first few songs he was just taking off his clothing one piece at a time. by the end of the show he only had on work out shorts. some of Cage the Elephant songs are ok i guess but the music is just so dull, i couldn't for the life of me figure out why everyone was so into them.

2. I recently learned ...Trail of Dead maestro Conrad Keely plays the sweet mellotron on "Everything Hits at Once"! That's a killer contribution.
