There has probably been a thread for this, but I can't find it. I want only songs you actively despise from artists you consider yourself a fan of.

And here is Silence by Pulp, a track they have tried to delete from history, and with reasonhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=3o-8QOTEUOc(lots of 80s Pulp is brilliant though)

Oh wow, I didn't realise Pulp had suppressed a B-side when compiling stuff. "Silence" is... kinda interesting.

The Who, “It’s Your Turn,” the worst song from their worst album, a half-assed corporate-rock throwaway (that Townshend doesn’t even play on because he was in rehab).

VDGG - When She Comes is a truly shit retread of former glories and I can't believe they put it out in the same year as Still Life
― imago, Monday, 15 July 2019 06:19 (five years ago)
you know what, it's still better than "meurglys iii". ok so hammill has a 15 minute ode to his guitar, which isn't a good start. also he's kind of a shit guitar player. i know he has his fans, but it's like trying to listen to neil young solo in 17. also there's a lengthy reggae section, which isn't necessarily disqualifying, but it's perilously close to frank zappa reggae, which is one of the worst sounds on the planet, i mean actually worse than reggae mike love.
generally though hammill is one of those songwriters who even when he's doing a shit song i love him; he's endearingly shit. that goes double for chris judge smith, btw, though "christmas can be terrible" is even worse than christmas!
― Un Poco Loco Moco (rushomancy), Monday, 15 July 2019 07:06 (five years ago)
Hammill has no shit songs, When She Comes and Meurglys III are both great.
― van dyke parks generator (anagram), Monday, 15 July 2019 08:08 (five years ago)
The first four minutes of Meurglys III begin like they're going to be the greatest VDGG song of all. The rest of it doesn't quite live up but it makes one hell of an introduction

"Bull in the heather" - Sonic Youth
― . (Michael B), Monday, 15 July 2019 12:59 (five years ago)
I’m sure every fan (of any band) can name one of these. Recently when I saw Rammstein live it reminded me again how lame Du Hast is.
― Siegbran, Monday, 15 July 2019 13:02 (five years ago)
Hard to know where to start, but Husker Du's "Turn on the News" springs to mind; that might represent the biggest disconnect between what I think of it and what most everyone else thinks of it.

sure but I still dig the rhythm of that song. it sounds pretty great before the piano bit comes in.
my pick for Ae is "Stud" - sounds like nails on a chalkboard. and it's the longest track on the album!
― frogbs, Monday, 15 July 2019 13:22 (five years ago)
would also like to mention Ween's "Spinal Meningitis" which actively skeeves me out to the point where I pretty much have to skip it. not a bad song just one that hits its mark a little too well
― frogbs, Monday, 15 July 2019 13:23 (five years ago)
I love Bull In The Heather and Lowride
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 15 July 2019 13:36 (five years ago)
Trying to think of an Ae track I actively hate and it's hard. I either love it or I'm not keen on it. Or at least up until Confield. Cfern and Pen Expers hurt my brain quite a lot
Blur - Mr Robinson's Quango and Ernold Same are really dire
Talking Heads - Stay Up Late (I don't really like songs about babies on the whole)
Beach Boys - Cherry Cherry Coupe (sounds like the Cherry Coupe is really slow and clapped out)
― frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 15 July 2019 13:44 (five years ago)
Also, the Beatles's "Get Back" (the song). Almost fingernails on a chalkboard level...
― AlXTC from Paris
There are a few Beatles songs I hate, mostly late songs. (I think "Love Me Do" is fucking stupid, but I don't hate it necessarily.) Ballad of John and Yoko. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Probably others.
― Un Poco Loco Moco (rushomancy), Monday, 15 July 2019 13:47 (five years ago)
Two More Highly Regarded Songs I Hate by Artists I Love ("hate" is overstating it--strongly dislike would be more accurate--but I have to narrow this down, else I'd just be listing "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and stuff like that):
Dylan - "Ballad of a Thin Man" (like it conceptually, just hate the sound of it; everyone else would pick "Rainy Day Woman," which sometimes is my favourite Dylan song)
Beatles - "Drive My Car"
Velvet Underground - "Venus in Furs," or at least half of it
― clemenza, Monday, 15 July 2019 13:47 (five years ago)
(not directed at rushomance...it's a very hateable song)

I struggle with XTC's version of All Along The Watchtower also Super Tuff and especially My Weapon
― MaresNest, Monday, 15 July 2019 13:57 (five years ago)
To stay on classic 60s pop-rock, the Stones "Street Fighting Man" has always sounded horrible to me. Never understood why it's so highly regarded. It's a tuneless mess.

XXP - I agree, I've seen fairly robust dislike for Push on ILM in the past, it is baffling to me, the live version from Glastonbury '86 basically made me a lifelong fan.
― MaresNest, Monday, 15 July 2019 14:31 (five years ago)
I must be the only one who loves the Watchtower cover, it almost feels like they're trying to slaughter a sacred cow. it's pretty groovy to me though
the other two I don't really consider XTC songs...those were both Barry Andrews' songs right? I don't remember what either of them sound like.
the one I'd pick is "Wounded Horse"...I actually like when Partridge deliberately tries to sound obnoxious but it actually grates on me here
on a similar note I think The Police are a great example of this phenomenon - every album seems to have That One Song that people can't stand. "Be My Girl - Sally" is the one for me, especially since it borrows from an earlier (and actually quite great!) song they did as Strontium 90, one which they should've just covered ouright

btw Pulp have never compiled any of their pre-1992 material (Fire control it, and Jarvis asked people not to buy their reissues and compilations [which skip other b-sides too]), and still have 10 b-sides (including remixes) uncompiled from the Different Class era, about a dozen (inc mixes) from the Hardcore era, and 8 or so (ie all of them) from the We Love Life singles. Plus also-uncompiled non-B-side tracks like All Time High, My Body May Die, et al.

it’s not acid jazz it’s soft serve electro for cruising in a futuristic city
― brimstead, Monday, 15 July 2019 17:39 (five years ago)
Also I freely admit that my antipathy towards "Push" stems from reading the lyrics in an Italian lyric book that came with the "I'm a Cult Hero"/"I Dig You" 7" flexi-single in the back and inventing a mournful, ominous-sounding song in my head for it and being shocked by the discrepancy when I actually heard the song. I would probably like it if it was in a minor key.
"Mint Car" is a festering bag of sick which has only 2 redeeming qualities:
― brigadier pudding (DJP), Monday, 15 July 2019 17:42 (five years ago)
(If they had dropped the 4 WMS songs off the album and included "Adonis", "It Used To Be Me", "Home", and "A Pink Dream" in their place, I would defend that album.)
― brigadier pudding (DJP), Monday, 15 July 2019 17:43 (five years ago)
^ agree on Mint Car (and Return), and on Home & It Used To Be Me, I can't remember how Adonis/A Pink Dream/Waiting go though
I love Push though!

"Sabotage", Beastie Boys"It's Oh So Quiet", Bjork
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 15 July 2019 17:55 (five years ago)
I can't remember how Adonis/A Pink Dream/Waiting go though
"Adonis" is "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea"-lite (in terms of repetition/insistence of musical motif; it's a mellower song overall) with the chorus that starts "Dream yourself awake""Waiting" is a midtempo syncopated jam driven by acoustic guitar with electric guitar solo ornamentation and some of Jason's best early drumming"A Pink Dream" is an uptempo pop-rock song led by acoustic guitar and "Mint Car"-esque vocals, only they work on this song
