it was so hard to whittle the list down. 2 polls could easily have been done

One of my top years for music, there's a ton of stuff on here I still listen to regularly including the AMC, Sugar, Urge Overkill, Tribe, Sleep, PJ Harvey, and Wu-Tang albums, but in the end I'm going with the predictable choice and voting Stereolab. The recent reissue has really reminded me how much I love that album and just how damn good it is.

Voted for Saint Etienne just ahead of Tindersticks, The Boo Radleys and Insides.

My biggest omissions are Pet Shop Boys, De La Soul and Slowdive.

The absence of Exile in Guyville surprised me too, but it does allow me to vote for my favourite Buffalo Tom record.

the first tindersticks all the way. i passed more or less the entire autumn listening to it. one of the few cds which use the length limit without any filler. what an amazing flow.

btw my real 1993 fave is still idaho - year after year.

Ha yes I'm faced with this dilemma too, I might go for something else here, probably Verve or Wu-Tang.

At the time it definitely would have been Stereolab. Now probably Midnight Marauders. Would’ve also considered Buhloone Mind State or World Gone Wrong if they were here.

I voted for the Orbital album too, it feels like such a leap forward for techno - I don't think any groups were connecting the dots quite like Orbital were. Even the Fluke album from this year (which felt a bit ahead of its time) can't really compare. Plus, their ability to fit 5+ distinct hooks into a track like "Impact" still feels crazy to me. These guys definitely have a gift.

I never heard of her until ILM started. Dave Mathews Band as well. Sublime.

Americans learned of the huge in uk britpop bands via ilm too.

From bubbling under and the votable ones, my favourite album of the year back then was easily Suede, followed closely by Gentlemen, Rid Of Me, Zooropa, and Tindersticks.
Discovered much later and love: Sheet One, Sleep's Holy Mountain, Transient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements, and Painful.
Ashamed to admit I haven't heard: Midnight Marauders.
Missing in action and currently maybe my favourite: Souvlaki.

Sleep made it into the options btw.

This was a huge year for metal, Immortal, Burzum, Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Katatonia, Disembowelment, Demilich, Impaled Nazarene, Dissection, My Dying Bride all released (or recorded, like Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum and Mayhem) their career best in this year, and the whole Vikernes/Euronymous saga all over the news.

I love Scrawl, but Velvet Hammer was a disappointment. I couldn't really figure out why until it dawned on me after maybe five listens: the new drummer is too laid-back and behind-the-beat. For a band like Scrawl that had a great, agitated sound, it's not a good fit.

Almost impossible to choose between Tindersticks, Fugazi, The God Machine, Earth and Sleep. Prolly would have gone for Undertow if it had been available.

AMC 'Mercury' for me, although had Seam's 'The Problem with Me' been up there I may have had a conundrum.

Mercury was my choice too. Brilliant album...would have garnered my vote in 1993 too.

I love A Northern Soul even more, Urban Hymns not so much

I love UH but ANS and Storm in Heaven are better imo. Forth is really underrated though.

ANS is more consistent as an actual album than storm I think.
