Giant Steps

Bee OK, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:16 (five years ago)

I haven't added my apocrypha to one of these in a while, so why not?

Akademia - Requiem (Pier Francisco Cavalli)
Amy Denio - Tongues
Art of Primitive Sound - Musical Instruments from Prehistory: The Paleolithic
Bagad Bro Kemperle - Kejadenn
Bruce Fowler - Ants Can Count
De Kift - Krankenhaus
Demilich - Nespithe
Egor i Opizdenevshie - Sto let odinochestva
Fibulator - drankfromtheasphalt
Flipper's Guitar - On Pleasure Bent
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (surprised at this being omitted)
Man or Astroman? - Is It...
Moonshake - Eva Luna
Ultramarine - United Kingdoms

Oh, well, that was short! You got all the really good ones I guess.

Un Poco Loco Moco (rushomancy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:38 (five years ago)

Where is exile in guyville?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:38 (five years ago)

xp I guess you don't like Exile in Guyville? that would have been my vote

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:39 (five years ago)

Wu Tang, Siamese Dream, or Midnight Marauders

jmm, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:42 (five years ago)

not so much didn't like albums morelike not enough choices had to leave a lot out, such as the jellyfish.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:45 (five years ago)

but the other thread people said one poll not two

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:46 (five years ago)

my first thought is Black Sunday, for a great memory that I have associated with it

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:50 (five years ago)

Egor i Opizdenevshie - Sto let odinochestva

i meant to include this on the bubbling under list. its mighty stuff.

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 01:51 (five years ago)

7 times out of 10 we listen to our music at night

brimstead, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:02 (five years ago)

I see now Black Sunday is not on the actual list

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:05 (five years ago)

xp midnight marauders is pretty great

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:09 (five years ago)

midnight marauders

mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:13 (five years ago)

I'd say ... 15-ish albums here I love.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:20 (five years ago)

it was so hard to whittle the list down. 2 polls could easily have been done

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 02:20 (five years ago)

One of my top years for music, there's a ton of stuff on here I still listen to regularly including the AMC, Sugar, Urge Overkill, Tribe, Sleep, PJ Harvey, and Wu-Tang albums, but in the end I'm going with the predictable choice and voting Stereolab. The recent reissue has really reminded me how much I love that album and just how damn good it is.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 03:19 (five years ago)

Voted for Saint Etienne just ahead of Tindersticks, The Boo Radleys and Insides.

My biggest omissions are Pet Shop Boys, De La Soul and Slowdive.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 03:57 (five years ago)

Slowdive

souvlaki wasn't released til 94 in the states, maybe it makes it onto that poll?

mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 04:01 (five years ago)

The absence of Exile in Guyville surprised me too, but it does allow me to vote for my favourite Buffalo Tom record.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 04:02 (five years ago)

the first tindersticks all the way. i passed more or less the entire autumn listening to it. one of the few cds which use the length limit without any filler. what an amazing flow.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 07:07 (five years ago)

btw my real 1993 fave is still idaho - year after year.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 07:13 (five years ago)

God Machine!

Best album EVER.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:40 (five years ago)

This one is rough.

In Utero, once again if I'm being honest (for the third poll in a row), but there are so many contenders, whether it be Rid of Me, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) or Tindersticks I.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:48 (five years ago)

Lack of Death, Dissection, Katatonia and My Dying Bride makes me sad.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:50 (five years ago)

Suede, from Midnight Marauders and The Loud Family's Plants And Birds And Rocks And Things

groovypanda, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 10:26 (five years ago)

A huge year for ambient:

Thomas Köner - Permafrost
Hiroshi Yoshimura - Wet Land
Haruomi Hosono - Medicine Compilation: From the Quiet Lodge
Takashi Kokubo - Oasis Of The Wind II: A Story Of Forest And Water
Pete Namlook - Air
Muslimgauze - Vote Hezbollah

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 10:50 (five years ago)

rusho that Moonshake album was in the 92 poll. Voted Trux. Worst omission after Exile: Medicine's The Buried Life

think the toledo mud hens but for twitter (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 11:32 (five years ago)

Seefeel's Quique really should be on the proper list, ahead of shite like Archers Of Loaf.

Voted for Orbital.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 11:50 (five years ago)

Everything on this list worse than Heartwork so I'm not going to vote.

chap, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 11:53 (five years ago)

In Utero, once again if I'm being honest (for the third poll in a row

Ha yes I'm faced with this dilemma too, I might go for something else here, probably Verve or Wu-Tang.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 12:16 (five years ago)

At the time it definitely would have been Stereolab. Now probably Midnight Marauders. Would’ve also considered Buhloone Mind State or World Gone Wrong if they were here.

o. nate, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 13:14 (five years ago)

I voted for the Orbital album too, it feels like such a leap forward for techno - I don't think any groups were connecting the dots quite like Orbital were. Even the Fluke album from this year (which felt a bit ahead of its time) can't really compare. Plus, their ability to fit 5+ distinct hooks into a track like "Impact" still feels crazy to me. These guys definitely have a gift.

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 13:37 (five years ago)

Last Splash easily, followed by Enter the Wu-Tang

J. Sam, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 13:38 (five years ago)

Rid of Me over Painful, but no Exile in Guyville feels a little odd.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 13:59 (five years ago)

not really, she wasnt covered at all in the uk.
she was about as well known in the UK as Runrig in the usa

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:01 (five years ago)

Yeah, I didnt hear about her until the early 00s tbh. I still havent heard the album yet.

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:06 (five years ago)

I never heard of her until ILM started. Dave Mathews Band as well. Sublime.

Americans learned of the huge in uk britpop bands via ilm too.

Some acts just never crossed the ocean.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:09 (five years ago)

that DMB thread I started long ago was full of bemusement to us here.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:10 (five years ago)

oh god the britpop years are coming up

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:11 (five years ago)

Always wild to remember that Midnight Marauders and Enter the Wu-Tang were released the same day.

Chris L, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:18 (five years ago)

i did not know that!

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:21 (five years ago)

From bubbling under and the votable ones, my favourite album of the year back then was easily Suede, followed closely by Gentlemen, Rid Of Me, Zooropa, and Tindersticks.
Discovered much later and love: Sheet One, Sleep's Holy Mountain, Transient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements, and Painful.
Ashamed to admit I haven't heard: Midnight Marauders.
Missing in action and currently maybe my favourite: Souvlaki.

willem, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:31 (five years ago)

Sleep made it into the options btw.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:37 (five years ago)

New Bomb Turks vote, so they get some love - such a fun record to this day!

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:48 (five years ago)

^^ it really is, total classic, furious nonstop rock action. I burned a CD version with all the singles tacked on and it rules.

I voted Stereolab just over Mazzy Star

sleeve, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:50 (five years ago)

new bomb turks album is one ive cherished since day one. a desert island disc for sure

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:54 (five years ago)

yeah I bought it when it came out, after a record store owner played me the first 2 minutes

sleeve, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:55 (five years ago)

2 songs then

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 15:02 (five years ago)

the urge overkill and posies albums better get some love too

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 15:03 (five years ago)

Manic Street Preachers. GATS was my uncommon pick for their best album, until they released Futurology.

Valentijn, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:18 (five years ago)

"Wu-Tang again?"
"Ah yeah, again and again!"

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:25 (five years ago)

Quick top 10: 1. Afghan Whigs, 2. St Etienne, 3. Matthew Sweet - Altered Beast, 4. Sultans of Ping FC - Casual Sex in the Cineplex, 5. The The - Dusk, 6. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville, 7. ATCQ, 8. Blur - Modern Life, 9. One Dove, 10. G.W. McLennan - Fireboy

The Fall, Seam, Tindersticks, Stereolab, Das Efx and more bubbling under; oh, and Jam and Spoon's Tripomatic Fairytales and Gorki's Hij Leeft

dorsalstop, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:27 (five years ago)

Tool - Undertow

dammit

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:30 (five years ago)

(voted Orbital just over ATCQ)

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:31 (five years ago)

More to choose from than last year’s list, totally rap-centric:
A Tribe Called Quest • Midnight Marauders
Snoop Doggy Dogg • Doggystyle
Wu Tang Clan • Enter the Wu Tang
(and bubbling under: Black Moon • Enta da Stage)

WTC, probably.

R&B missing in action, as announced, but still unfortunate:
Janet Jackson • janet.
Jodeci • Diary of a Mad Band
Me’shell NdegéOcello • Plantation Lullabies
Tevin Campbell • I’m Ready
Toni Braxton • Toni Braxton
Tony! Toni! Toné! • Sons of Soul

Jam and Spoon's Tripomatic Fairytales
Nice one!

breastcrawl, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 19:36 (five years ago)

this is maybe my personal watershed year

could have legit voted for any of afghan whigs, archers of loaf, björk, peej, stereolab, breeders, verve or yo la tengo

or the unlisted liz phair, the karl hendricks trio, grifters, madder rose, mekons, morphine, portastatic, scrawl, SEAM, spinanes, superchunk, velocity girl

conceivably also bailter space, catherine wheel, curve, just 'regret' from republic, zooropa

anyway this poll has no credibility because it lacks JUDGMENT NIGHT i mean come on

mookieproof, Thursday, 18 July 2019 01:49 (five years ago)

think I'm going to vote for Debut

Dan S, Thursday, 18 July 2019 01:52 (five years ago)

Always wild to remember that Midnight Marauders and Enter the Wu-Tang were released the same day.

Man, that was the best day for music.

jmm, Thursday, 18 July 2019 02:01 (five years ago)

the karl hendricks trio

oh yeah!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 18 July 2019 02:21 (five years ago)

Madder Rose!

I forgot about that album! I bought a copy of it when it came out. Great album.

. (Michael B), Thursday, 18 July 2019 08:39 (five years ago)

From this list, Snoop, Wu Tang or Dinosaur Jr.

This was a huge year for metal, Immortal, Burzum, Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Katatonia, Disembowelment, Demilich, Impaled Nazarene, Dissection, My Dying Bride all released (or recorded, like Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum and Mayhem) their career best in this year, and the whole Vikernes/Euronymous saga all over the news.

Siegbran, Thursday, 18 July 2019 10:57 (five years ago)

or the unlisted liz phair, the karl hendricks trio, grifters, madder rose, mekons, morphine, portastatic, scrawl, SEAM, spinanes, superchunk, velocity girl

I love Scrawl, but Velvet Hammer was a disappointment. I couldn't really figure out why until it dawned on me after maybe five listens: the new drummer is too laid-back and behind-the-beat. For a band like Scrawl that had a great, agitated sound, it's not a good fit.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 18 July 2019 14:33 (five years ago)

good call, I never thought about that before

sleeve, Thursday, 18 July 2019 14:45 (five years ago)

I know you've only left off Galaxy 2 Galaxy s/t because it's not officially an album. Right?

That aside, Bytes just ahead if Noise Burts (sic).

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Friday, 19 July 2019 15:06 (five years ago)

Fugazi or Tribe for me. Going with Tribe. I wrote most of my dissertation listening to that over and over.

stop torturing me ethel (broom air), Friday, 19 July 2019 15:48 (five years ago)

What a completely boring year.

Transient.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 19 July 2019 16:49 (five years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 00:01 (five years ago)

Almost impossible to choose between Tindersticks, Fugazi, The God Machine, Earth and Sleep. Prolly would have gone for Undertow if it had been available.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 09:00 (five years ago)

AMC 'Mercury' for me, although had Seam's 'The Problem with Me' been up there I may have had a conundrum.

Grantman, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 09:11 (five years ago)

Mercury was my choice too. Brilliant album...would have garnered my vote in 1993 too.

yugi ex, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 10:21 (five years ago)

Best Album on OUR Favourite Albums of......1994!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 11:00 (five years ago)

Sugar's "Beaster" deserved a vote. One of the greatest build-explode-relax records ever.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:09 (five years ago)

That is a shame, great little record.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:29 (five years ago)

That Verve album is also great

nate woolls, Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:36 (five years ago)

very underrated album. esp by those who got into them on the 2 albums afterwards.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:45 (five years ago)

I love A Northern Soul even more, Urban Hymns not so much

nate woolls, Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:47 (five years ago)

I love UH but ANS and Storm in Heaven are better imo. Forth is really underrated though.

ANS is more consistent as an actual album than storm I think.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:53 (five years ago)

No votes for Boces! Its their masterpiece imo

The World According To.... (Michael B), Thursday, 25 July 2019 21:01 (five years ago)

after all the talk on the last thread ratm got zero votes

The Posies - Frosting On The Beater 1 thought this would have done a lot better

cant believe these got zero

Urge Overkill - Saturation, 0
Earth - Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version , 0
Sugar - Beaster, 0
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine 0
Girls Against Boys - Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby , 0

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 25 July 2019 21:16 (five years ago)

tbf, beaster is an ep (and maybe one of the best ever??)
