another typically eclectic bunch, though I'm guessing Marie Davidson will be the ILM favorite

my sleeper choice is FET.NAT, who I caught as an opening act maybe 5-6 years ago with maybe 20 people in attendance and they pretty much completely blew me away. I'm consistently impressed at the quality of acts the Polaris jury zeroes in on.

am i dreaming or does Shad get nom'd for one of these every year

alpine static, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 04:31 (five years ago)

this is apparently his third nomination since 2010, so no it is not entirely your imagination

also, Snotty Nose Rez Kids were shortlisted last year

I've only heard the Marie Davidson and FET:NAT and while I liked them both well enough, all I can think to myself is: where is Big Brave?

justice for rook and devi ffs

Fet.Nat are local; I saw them once and they put on a great live show. (I'm counting Gatineau as local since I can walk there from my apartment.) Tbh, I don't think I've listened to the whole album yet but I will address that. Something like a mix of RIO, modern jazz, postpunk, and funk influences in the live sound?

"where is Big Brave?" <-- alas metal tends to not get a ton of love in these things

Tbf A Gaze Among Them strikes me as a less jarring listen than Le mal.

Linsey Wellman, who plays sax with Fet.Nat is a mainstay of the local avant-jazz and free improv scenes and a v good player imo.

How is the Polaris prize viewed by Canadians in the music industry? Is it considered to be a positive for artists and the industry, or is it just masturbatory?

I’m neither Canadian, nor in the industry, and I actually quite like tuning into the gala each year. Exposes me to a lot of new artists I otherwise might not have known.

I'm not "in" the industry but I think it's mainly viewed as pretty innocuous/harmless

I've unfamiliar with elisapie, this performance is sick
