This no-brainer is sure to be one helluva barn burner; Whilst the immensely popular (and influential) Kingston Trio sold tons of records throughout their career, doust thou prefer:

The first 3 years (and 7 proper albums) with founder Dave Guard.

-or-

The subsequent 8 years (and 13 albums) with John Stewart

My dad partied at Menlo College with the original Guard-fortified trio, so there's my vote easy.

steve, i see that Collector's Choice finally released a disc version -- Which is nice, it's a really great album.

Matt -- I bet those guys partied well -- me being too young to meet the Trio, my brush with greatness came in the Squirel Nut Zippers' tour bus.

three years pass...
Fucking hell. One thread on the Kingston trio, and it's an entire 4 posts long.

Brilliant band who changed everything, and got majorly hated on for no good reason. I couldn't choose between Guard vs. Stewart right now. Give me some Time To Think. (*drum roll*)

Not every track they did was golden -- in fact they had embarrassing ones on occasion -- but listening to "Coo Coo U" right now, it's basically this minimal stand-up bass latin rhythm prototyping Devo's poetic quirkiness 15 years ahead of 'em.
