search & destroy - depth charge

A request for information - I was listening to music I don't listen to very often, and I came across this depth charge 4-tk CD single I haven't listened to for AGES. I forget the title, but it has 4 grrrlz w/guns on the cover, and one of the trax is called "five deadly venoms". It's absolutely fantastic, no kidding. It did that crunchy hip-hop loop thing earlier & much better than any of that "big beat" stuff, one of the tracks uses a kind of oriental hammered dulcimer-ish line (suspiciously) similar to that missy elliot (IIRC?) track, and better, and there are samples from kung fu flicks, which I THINK predate wu tang clan (I may be wrong here though) It's a blast, but I know nothing abt depth charge, and now I want to hear more, so please fire away! Help!!

Depth Charge is primarily a bloke called J. Saul Kane. I never enjoyed his DC stuff that much but he used to be part of a rave-era duo called Eon who were terrific - "Spice", "Basket Case", the other one which samples Dune....all hard and nasty gems. Then AFAIK he formed Depth Charge and worked his kung-fu direction, and the last I heard he was taking DC in a 'porno' direction - I heard something on some sampler and enjoyed it a lot. I know there are people here who can be loads more helpful than me.

Saul Kane was cutting up Kung Fu about the same time as the Rza, but his sample based tracks started in the late eighties, then found his audience in 1990 with 'Goal' - latino/baleric beats with the Brazilian commentator screaming 'ggoooaaaaaaall', a distinctive beat on the 'rave' compilations kicking around at the time. DC released EPs in 92-93 defining their sound (9 Deadly Venoms LP is the compilation.) Then he left that scene to the Ninja Tune and Big Beat, and in 95 resurrected his late 80's alias Octagon Man, and a darker techno front for his groove. The 'porno' beats, were two albums released together, (by Saul Kane, I'm sure) deep techno or sleazy house, it's all gorgeously slurred together.
He's very prolific as DJ, producer, but if his name's on something, he probably wrote it and released it himself; running two labels DC (trip-hop and dub) which gave us Bomb the Bass, and Electron Industries (electro and techno), also finding time to found the Made in Hong Kong video label to promote 'heroic bloodshed' and indy art- house films in the UK.
There's so many guises and projects, he's a pain to pin down. But if you like that EP -
Search: stuff by Deadly Avenger or Bomb the Bass on DC, 9 Deadly Venoms LP, and DC Beat Classic compilation with many early hip-hop plunderphonic.
Personally I prefer his later stuff, Octagon Man EPs 95-99 and double album.

Yeah search Eon, classic rave. That album which name escapes me at the moment is...eh...banging. Check 'Fear is the Mindkiller' (maybe my alltime favorite rave-track). He also put out a very interesting electro mix-cd out on K7! (as Depth Charge) a couple of years ago. Nice mix of new and old stuff, with brilliant 'Tainted Love' extended mix somewhere at the end.

I used to love that late '80s/early '90s Depth Charge rec that had a great sample from (I think) 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly' - one of the 'Dollars' trilogy, anyway. "A measly thousand bucks - I'm worth a lot more than that!" Anybody remember what it was called? Certainly beat Tricky and Gorillaz to the Clint Eastwood/spaghetti western trib rec punch.

That's 'Bounty Killers', which is a stone cold classic. Collected on the 9 Deadly Venoms, which I would recommend to anyone. As well as the EON album 'Void Dweller', which has all those tracks mentioned above.

Can I just echo the general consensus here that you must get 9 Deadly Venoms. Though of course you've already got a few of them. Nothing gets a party jumping better.

i had 'fear is the mindkiller', 'spice' and the awesome 'depth charge vs. silver fox' which came out in 1991 - mc alkaline from gunshot guests on it - it has kung fu samples, grainy noize and breakbeats as well as a cool b-side called 'under the eye of the electric storm. He predates Wu Tang, is a precursor to trip hop an' big beat .

Jon started releasing records around the time of the 1st RSW releases, on the Vinyl Solution label (the original shop was opposite my flat)

is that the shop that was round the back of the Virgin Megastore?
