Airplane music

Hi
I'm going on the airplane for a long time on Saturday. I need suggestions of relaxing cds that I can listen to that will help me chill out and not go insane, along the lines of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works v. I and II, but not as scary maybe. Is Eno's Music for Airports too obvious of a choice? Can I use this as an excuse to buy that Out Hud album?

Go on Air Canada, the service is crap the food is crap but the inflight music is usually damm good. Specially when they have an old Motown/Stax channel going and Necko Case spotlight on one and two decent indie channels (all over the map stylisticaly, one rockist and the other dancist but all from independent labels) and a 80s channel playing Tomas Dolby, New Order and XTC.

Get both/either Dettinger's Intershop and/or Oasis.

I haven't heard the album, so I don't know if there's much difference, but Out Hud live = big stinking turd of a dud.

Hey, by coincidence I'm taking a very, very long flight next week too and I've prepared some listening just like what you're looking for. I bought a MP3 cd player over the weekend, and I'm pleased to say that a single CD will hold, like, 10 albums! I don't have the discs with me so I'm leaving out some stuff, but here's what I remember:

Labradford "Fixed :: Content" [I think this one is a *must*]
Labradford "La Media Naranja"
Keith Fullerton Whitman "Playthroughs"
Tim Hecker "Haunt Me Haunt Me, Do It Again"
Aarktica "No Solace in Sleep"
Windy and Carl "Antarctica"
Windy and Carl "Consciousness"
Brian Eno, the 4 Ambient albums
Marumari "The Wolves Hollow"
Mum "Yesterday was Dramatic" [Never travelled with this one, but I've always thought it would sound really good on a train]
Mum "Finally We are No One"
Auburn Lull "Alone I Admire" [haven't listened to this one a lot, but it sounds like it would fit the bill]

I'll check when I get home to see if I've left anything good out.

You could listen to all our suggestions, or you could just take a couple percocets and drink some red wine...

don't forget the bloody-mary's. I usually make a thermos-ful for trans-oceanic flights.

Spectrum - Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)

Last time I flew I heard a brilliant interview with The Streets on Gilles Peterson Worldwide, with Mike Skinner mucking about with his own lyrics to comic effect: "Heee's going to the chip shop - is he gonna get a kebab? Oh no! He's getting a cheeseburger!" (I'll add another gratuitous "Oh no!" for added ILM relevance)

Hurrah for the British Airways/BBC meritocracy...

and nobody's mentioned "Chill Out" by The KLF for awhile, so.. uh KLF "Chill Out".

My favorite is listening to music during take-off. There's a Pixies cover of a surf song that's the first song on one of their albums that is literally the PERFECT airplane-taking-off-song.

And, once you're in flight, try...

Sigur Ros (really!)
Talvin Singh
Buckethead's Colma or Electric Tear
Medeski Martin and Wood's Farmer's Reserve
Peter Gabriel's Passion
Future Sound of London
...and you can never have enough Eno on long flights

My favorite is listening to music during take-off.

All electronic devices -- including cell phones, laptops and portable music players -- must remain OFF during take-off.

The Stewardess Flight Attendant, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why I always get all the passengers to sing 'Immigrant Song' during takeoff on all my airplane rides, since I was seven years old.

Actually that's not true, but I wish it were.

I trust the new album is good, then.

Gonna go order me some more Diktators right away.

I always tend to take Indian Classical music.

Not sure if that was just the fact that my 1st long-haul flight was with the bargain Air India & that's what they had on the only listenable radio channel & so the association was made.

Wondering Boy Poet, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Try Eno's Music for Airplanes.

sixteen years pass...

boards of canada...anything by boards of canada.

i confirm this. especially in a beautiful place out in the country

the last self-titled my bloody valentine is one favourite, loveless a little less as i try not to kill it by too much listening. which i actually haven't done yet though i must have listened to it hundreds of times.

yesterday i listened to in ribbons from pale saints. another perfect album to listen to while flying. i had the impression it sounded better in the air than on the ground. the melodies were crystal clear, the drumming perfect and a kind of fitting fluffiness when looking at the sky and clouds from the airplane window.
