personally, i think it's doodoo, unfunky beats and pretentious rhymes. but everyone at my damn school seems to be in love with this stuff. soooo, yeah ....

brains (cerybut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

sub-trifean at best.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

naah stencil: aesop rock is at least on par with trife.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

you must want to provoke him, huh?

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

no, you.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, but I haven't heard aesop rock. Truth be told, I don't much like any hip-hop (with some exceptions, of course), much less understand/subscribe to the whole "bling bling vs. undie" debate 'round here.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

he's got that same lyrics born put-on cranky old man voice. but a different type of cranky old man, mind. so, dud.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"round" is a perfectly good word, hstencil

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks. I think.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Doo-doo? More like space doo-doo pistols. Great jazz-inflected minimalist beats. The "wall of words" approach takes a little getting used to, but the words do have an internal logic, as convoluted as it may be at times. The Appleseed EP and Labor Days are best, though there are many fine moments on Float as well.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought 'Daylight' was really really nice...dont think of it as hip hop if that helps

now are Dilated Peoples worth bothering is what i wanna know?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

His voice took some getting used to, but I like it a lot now. Labor Days is hot, the beats are funky. I think those beats suit him better than El-P's, but his cameo on Fan. Damage and the track on the Urban Renewal comp (that ending is hilarious!) are cool nonetheless.

And why wouldn't you think of it as hip-hop, Steve?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

His shit is jam packed from start to finish with lyrics. I think you really gotta be paying attention to appreciate him. I have too short of an attention span.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The album was alright to listen to. It sounded like what happened when someone thought Portishead started hip-hop, which might or might not be a bad thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

um... "labor days" i didn't care for as much as "float"... but "float" is the shit... witness "basic cable"... so is "music For earthworms". "shere khan" has r&b, sped up cock rock samples, ennio morricone, and other classics (is that "peter and the wolf" i hear?) lyrics are a bit more heady than your average street diggy, but whateva!

aesop's best when he's crate diggin.... cause it makes good on both ends.

but yeah...i was still a little disappointed with "labor days"

"big bang" has some straight up dirty south beats, triple time hi hats and all, i dont know what you mean by "unfunky"

juiceboxxx, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

after hearing "big bang," change unfunky beats to unfunky production. not that i'm entirely convinced that "funkiness" is necessarily the element that makes production on a track great, but it was the first criticism that popped into my mind ...

brains (cerybut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The production on Float as a whole leaves a little something to be desired, especially the drum sound, which is artificial and grating. Soundwise, I prefer the murky jazz samples of Appleseed or the laid-back eclecticism of Labor Days. But "Big Bang" is awesome.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Aesop Rock is the ultimate only-get-it-if-you-pay-close-attention emcee, and by "getting it" I don't exactly mean decoding some insightful life analysis, but simply picking up his vibe. After going through all of Labor Days there wasn't much I remembered, maybe the clumsy worker's anthem chorus and the track about the artist girl. Float got the message across more frequently, I agree w/ msp on "Basic Cable" but I also agree w/ o.nate on the production on that album which is rather flimsy. Last stuff I heard (Urban Renewal track, Mr. Lif chorus) I wasn't feeling at all, really.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah... why did i say "basic cable"... i meant "big bang"... although i think both are great...

if you're into file sharing... you can probably find "shere khan"... it was originally on a cdr release...

three years pass...

Liking Skelethon quite a bit. All self produced and very cohesive. I like how he promoted his album on youtube too; all the songs explained by him before playing a preview of the track at the end.

Has a couple fun tracks:

Last verse on Gopher Guts is so self defeating.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 30 August 2012 05:28 (thirteen years ago)

You like this record, Whiney?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 30 August 2012 05:28 (thirteen years ago)

i really like it

sisilafami, Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

i love the lyrics (i always love his lyrics), but the beats are lousy

jjjdoom (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:56 (thirteen years ago)

I like them and don't think they're much of a departure from past albums?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

i love the lyrics (i always love his lyrics), but the beats are lousy

isn't this aesop in a nutshell though

frogbs, Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

Depends if you like this type of production I guess.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

man I am glad to see Whiney rep for Aes's lyrics because I think he's pretty fucking brilliant but I feel like people who hate the music don't usually even give the begrudging props for 10+ years of consistently impressive wordplay

we don't wanna miss a THING!!! (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this new record is really good, had it on constant repeat last month
