Magnetic Fields over Wilco.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 21:17 (six years ago)

there is nothing exciting on that list. i think i'll go for summerteeth, never has wilco sounded so exuberantly pop, almost like the beatles. my real fave was "this is a pinback cd", what a gorgeous album about singing, harmonies and simplicity.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 21:23 (six years ago)

I know its rep has diminished in recent years, but sod it, this is Soft Bulletin and it isn’t even close, really. Especially if you can find the original version with the Mokran mixes of “Race for the Prize” and “Waiting for Superman” (which is one of the most beautiful songs ever!).

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 21:55 (six years ago)

something to write home about

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 21:58 (six years ago)

(actually: keep it like a secret or beaucoup fish, but i'm still voting for the get up kids)

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 21:59 (six years ago)

Boredoms / Trans-Am / MoM / Godspeed were the ones I was listening to from the poll.

VCN probably. Has it dated well?

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 22:06 (six years ago)

I listened to it recently and it still gave me chills - I don't think anyone's quite matched it in the last 20 years so that's why I'm gonna vote for it.

Lots of great electronic albums this year...Beacoup Fish, Surrender, Niun Niggung, Rest Proof Clockwork, Middle of Nowhere...couldn't really pick a favorite, though I hold a special place in my heart for Surrender because I bought that on the day of release and remember biking through town with a huge grin on my face while listening to it. They took a lot of backlash for that one but in retrospect they still managed to be ahead of the curve. Beacoup Fish still sounds nice, a little tied to its era (and if you follow UW live recordings you're probably sick of some of the tunes) but it does have "Jumbo" which is basically a perfect song. RPC and NN don't seem to have aged much. Particularly the Plaid album. They were really off on their own thing. As for Middle of Nowhere I still find it fascinating - one of the best 'writers block' albums, where they just sorta will themselves to another great album despite not having a whole lot of ideas.

The Ideal Crash, which has always been my favorite album of theirs by a fair distance.

Wilco

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 00:18 (six years ago)

was a toss up between Pavement and Boredoms with dEUS as a close runner up

frame casual (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 00:34 (six years ago)

The best album of 1999 is missing: Missy Elliott's 'Da Real World'.

Of those listed it's between Underworld and Magnetic Fields for me, with additional particular love for Orbital, Jay-Z, Kelis, Method Man/Redman and Low.

Tim F, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 00:50 (six years ago)

forgot about Secret Name

Beaucoup Fish is my favorite Underworld, it still sounds really good to me

MUSICK TO PLAY IN THE DARK

imago, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 10:04 (six years ago)

Voted for Vision Creation Newsun even though I always think of it as a '00s album thanks to its later UK release date. Total classic either way.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 11:01 (six years ago)

Would have gone for Olivia Tremor Control from the bubbling under list though.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 11:02 (six years ago)

Low's 'Secret Name' and Mos Def's 'Black on Both Sides' and Stereolab's 'Cobra and Phases...' are about the only albums from 1999 I'd miss if the year were deleted. None is on this list...

Soundslike, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 11:31 (six years ago)

With only one poll it meant 50 albums had to be cut

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 12:53 (six years ago)

Magnetic Fields over Wilco.

Exactly my perspective as well. The Fall's "Marshall Suite" is about 2/3's great, too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

Wow, Woodbine! Never saw that band ever mentioned before, I think.

This song in particular is lovely:

Still, voted for the Get Up Kids.

some faves on here, think ODB might win out for me tbh

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 13:41 (six years ago)

A big fat :( for delegating Juno to the bubbling under list...

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 13:41 (six years ago)

Beaucoup Fish is likely the album I listened to the most that year. Midnite Vultures second. I enjoyed the Soft Bulletin, but I remember not long after that getting (probably downloaded through Napster) Clouds Taste Metallic which basically became my favorite album for a while.

I listened to Vision Creation Newsun quite a bit also, but that must have gotten a North American release a year or two later, because I remember buying it as a new release later than 1999.

silverfish, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:34 (six years ago)

I am pretty sure this is the year I started just downloading a lot of stuff through Napster which means this was basically when I started really expanding my music taste. A very important year in that regard.

silverfish, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:38 (six years ago)

Of this list, Beaucoup Fish.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

Pretty sure I ordered VCN (the Japanese issue) from Forced Exposure.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:45 (six years ago)

Not much on this list floats my boat. Sleep? Wilco? Lips? Bonnie? Or Keep It Like a Secret, which I have probably listened to more than any of the other albums here.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:49 (six years ago)

further to Coil, this was the year of Guns, Pony and Memphis In Texas, all of which would need no introduction in a better world

imago, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 16:19 (six years ago)

Came here to vote for the Magnetic Fields. Did not leave disappointed.

SlimAndSlam, Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:03 (six years ago)

I think Jim O’Rourke’s Eureka is one of the really great albums on this list

Dan S, Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:29 (six years ago)

also Mimiyo Tomozawa’s cover art for it is disturbing and beautiful, as is her art for 2001’s Insignificance

Dan S, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:48 (six years ago)

Bardo Pond

― the cretin hits the cast (Drugs A. Money)

High five, emphasis on the high.
