TFW musicians give up music for painting/fine art

I always see this as the artworld being like "come over here into our clubhouse where your rock n roll pedigree will actually make you money!"

Speaking of pedigree, the irony is a lot of them have art school degrees and/or experience!

I prefer the stars that use their fame and money to buy themselves gallery shows because there's no chance in hell of anyone giving their godawful work a show otherwise.

Greg Gilbert (singer from Delays) has been mainly working as an artist the last few years as his illness doesn't allow him to do much else.

Seriously considering if I can buy a John Lurie print at some point. Really love his paintings.

They used one of Miles Davis's paintings as the cover of a new album of "lost" recordings from the 80s and the combination of the art and the done-in-30-seconds type treatment is truly hideous:

Well, Tobin Sprout still makes music but I imagine he's made far more money from his painting than he ever did from Guided By Voices.

I admit I put in the "give up" in the thread title to specifically exclude folks like Dylan - dabbles in fine art but has not retired from music etc.

i never had a problem with beefheart switching to a career where he could actually get paid, particularly since i feel like he'd written (or in some cases "written") all the great songs he was going to write by that point anyway
