Beefheart, Justine Frischmann, Chris Mars, etc.

I always see this as the artworld being like "come over here into our clubhouse where your rock n roll pedigree will actually make you money!"

Paul Simonon, Joni Mitchell ...

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 9 September 2019 19:24 (five years ago)

Speaking of pedigree, the irony is a lot of them have art school degrees and/or experience!

I prefer the stars that use their fame and money to buy themselves gallery shows because there's no chance in hell of anyone giving their godawful work a show otherwise.

Greg Gilbert (singer from Delays) has been mainly working as an artist the last few years as his illness doesn't allow him to do much else.

(should probably disclose that he's a friend, but I genuinely think his drawings are very good indeed fwiw)

John Lurie?

Seriously considering if I can buy a John Lurie print at some point. Really love his paintings.

They used one of Miles Davis's paintings as the cover of a new album of "lost" recordings from the 80s and the combination of the art and the done-in-30-seconds type treatment is truly hideous:

Well, Tobin Sprout still makes music but I imagine he's made far more money from his painting than he ever did from Guided By Voices.

Boulez, vous couchez avec moi? (Tom D.), Monday, 9 September 2019 19:55 (five years ago)

I admit I put in the "give up" in the thread title to specifically exclude folks like Dylan - dabbles in fine art but has not retired from music etc.

Syd Barrett painted a lot in his later life.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 9 September 2019 22:59 (five years ago)

i never had a problem with beefheart switching to a career where he could actually get paid, particularly since i feel like he'd written (or in some cases "written") all the great songs he was going to write by that point anyway

All of these have dabbled in the visual arts and have used their art as albums covers:

Marilyn Manson
Grimes
Fiona Apple
Devendra Banhart
Bob Dylan
Ani Difranco
John Lurie (Lounge Lizards)
Cat Stevens
Mika
Ryan Adams
M.I.A.
Hannah Hopper (Grouplove)
Tyler the Creator
Joni Mitchell
FKA Twigs
Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips)
John Squire (Stone Roses)
Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets)
Sam Beam (Iron and Wine)
David Byrne (Talking Heads)

Others who have dabbled in visual arts but never used them as album covers: Ringo Starr, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury (he technically created the Queen crest used in A Night at The Opera and A Day At The Races but I don't think he got artwork credits on the liner notes?)

I mean, if we're talking about actors who have moved on to doing self-portraits

Btw Miles Davis paintings are like really really bad

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 17:41 (five years ago)

I love Kevin Coyne's paintings!

The Inner Mounting Phlegm (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 17:50 (five years ago)

Paul Simonon was always a far better (and more qualified) artist than he was a bass player anyway!
