Bad Reunions: Bands that shouldn't have done it

I'm trying to compile a list that would authoritatively prove that the odds of a band's reunion producing anything of interest are remarkably low. So far all I have are:

KISS
Blondie
The Sex Pistols
The Who (many times over)
Big Star
The Buzzcocks
Motley Crue
Culture Club
Madness

I'm sure there are many more, please add yr own...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

get the buzzcocks off that list.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Only if you give me something else to put on there instead!

Seriously - what could possibly have been gained from their reunion? Where's the new music on a par with "Why Can't I Touch It?" And do I need to mention how unattractive it is to see a balding 40-year old man sing those words?

Please let him touch it already so I don't have to think about it...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

television own this thread in a fit of bad bar rock covers of songs they actually wrote.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The Go-Gos.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Soft Cell.

(uh, really, I've no opinion on this subject or them.)

hstencil, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The Eagles, not that they were any good to begin with.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i have to say, i saw reunion shows by kiss and blondie and thought both bands still had a lot to offer.

angelo (angelo), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Name a band that SHOULD have done a reunion tour/release/ etc..

dsico (dsico), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

one of the best shows ever was Supernova opening up for the Buzzcocks on their second reunion tour. god i laughed as the lead singer of Supernova mocked the Buzzcocks, even going so far as to hide behind one of their amps with a puppet, humiliating them further and making the Buzzcocks beyond angry. The Buzzcocks got what they deserved because GAWD did they suck and GAWD they should have never come back ever.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that story because I love Supernova, bless their hearts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

90's King Crimson

bahtology, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

ned, have you done a supernova thread yet or is it even worth it?

i have the first 3 singles (gifts from a bday many years ago)... pretty great stuff... never saw them live.

costa mesa hates me.

gygax!, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:51 (twenty-three years ago)

You and I might be the only people responding on it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, 90s King Crimson is fucking great. It's not even a reunion since it was a totally new band. A totally noisy skronk metal poppy improv two drummer having new band.

I have friends who would say Siouxsie & the Banshees after seeing the tour. I've seen the Meters a couple times, it was decent, but more rock than funk, and nothing compared to the original lineup (I suppose it doesn't count as a reunion if it only has two original members then).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy Mondays

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The Velvet Underground reunion tour is the worst gig I've ever been to. Anyone who heard it wanted to never form a band.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Destruction
Venom

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Judas Priest
Razor
Jag Panzer

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind reunions as long as they have a point and don't outstay their welcome. The Raincoats are a perfect case in point. First they played a tour featuring old stuff, thereby satisfying their fans and re-establishing their relevance. A new EP and CD followed, and then a tour to support the new stuff. Then, when they said what they had to say, they split up again. An elegant and satisfying second act.

I would have flown to London for the planned Young Marble Giants reunion last year. However, I would have adjusted my expectations accordingly - all three band members have remained active in music to some extent, sometimes collaborating, but none of their later projects resembled YMG very much...

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The Velvet Underground reunion tour is the worst gig I've ever been to. Anyone who heard it wanted to never form a band.

Heheh...ouch. Was it really that bad? The live album was crappy in places, but not a total waste. "Sweet Jane" with Moe on drums was the way it should've been in the first place. And "All Tomorrow's Parties" with John Cale singing wasn't too bad, against all odds.

I didn't see any of the Buzzcocks reunion shows, but Trade Test Transmissions was quite listenable. Same for Big Star's Columbia - I must admit, the Posies guys did a fine job, especially on "Feel." It's a little rough in places, but it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The Sex Pistols

NO! No, no and a thousand times no. The Sex Pistols reunion was brilliant because no one expected it, and because it pissed so many people off. They were never revolutionary or politically credible, but they were phenomenal at pissing people off and that's why it was so perfect.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 21 November 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Name a band that SHOULD have done a reunion tour/release/ etc.."

A couple of easy answers to this one:

Jane's Addiction - Saw them in Japan this past summer at their first festival show in 10 years and whatever it was that they used to have, they still got it!

The Stone Roses - If there is any justice in the world, these guys will hook up one more time even if just for one last tour. The words "unfinished business" hang like a flashing neon light over this band. By the time "Second Coming" was released they had really learned how to play. Imagine what they could do now. Goodnight Oasis...

The Pixies - The world needs them now more than ever. If you don't believe me just turn on your radio. I'm waiting for Frank, Kim, Joey and Dave to come save us again.

Julien Sandiford, Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i turn on the radio and one fo the last things i wish is fuckin pixies

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Chupa-Cabras,

Your spelling and grammar clearly indicate why you're incapable of appreciating a band as great as the Pixies. I mean it sucks when your rock idols are smarter than you doesn't it? Maybe you should stick to Britney Spears where it's safe.

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 21 November 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

no he's right they sucked & i'm glad i don't hear them on the radio too

(doorag), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That's where you're wrong man. You hear the Pixies every day on the radio and you don't even know it, it's just that now we're subjected to watered down versions of the original. The whole quiet verse/loud chorus pattern that has become so cliched now is a Pixies invention. Kurt Cobain even said that "Smells like Teen Spirit" was basically a Pixies song. You guys would probably shit on anything not in heavy rotation on MTV anyway.

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 21 November 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i love the pixies, but your defensiveness about them is making me wish i didn't.

and the reformed madness did 'lovestruck' which i thought was a lovely song, so i'd get them off the list.

adam b (adam b), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pixies were good in part because they were a blanked-out cynical bubblegum band not because they 'saved' anyone from it. I think that side to Frank Black might have been lost forever, so I don't want them back though if they need the money why not, they've given me a lot of pleasure over the years.

My fiancee recently overcame her years-long loathing of F Black when he contributed a (duff) song to the Powerpuff Girls movie soundtrack.

The VU reunion was that bad I thought - a real yawn, no life at all, really put me off the band. L Reed mostly to blame for his stadium-rocker audience hogging, but the obvious professional dislike of Cale (and maybe others for him) had long since passed the point where it could spark anything interesting.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Spelling and grammar. Oh good lord... and there's me thinking I'm nitty.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

its not that i dont like the pixies, they are okay its just that i dont want to listen to it on the radio, and youre dissing me for my spelling and grammar?

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Julien's right, nobody had even heard of guitars before Frank Black came along. They're also responsible for the invention of the CD, the remix, and trance music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Chupa-Cabras,
Sorry about the grammar crack, I was just having a go at ya - but it was offside. The point here isn't to offend or take offence, it's just a bunch of music fans having a laugh. I never meant to appear defensive about the Pixies. I think their body of work stands up fine on it's own and needs no additional defending from me. Also, while I appreciate the humour in Dom's reply I still think that Frank Black was primarily responsible for popularizing the quiet verse/ loud chorus dynamic. Just one guy's opinion...

While all this was going on, we kinda got away from the original question(s) - bands that should or shouldn't have reunited.

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pixies 2002 would not equal the Pixies 1989. They would, in fact, be responsible for the biggest anticlimax since the Velvet Underground reunion.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Bigger than a Smashing Pumpkins reunion? I also heard a rumour about the Dead Kennedys. I hope it's not true - that could prove to be the biggest anticlimax in history.

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

is it true that Inspiral Carpets are reuniting? *runs screaming*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah the Dead Kennedys have reformed, but without Jello. Brandon Cruz is the scab singer.

I'm, as they say, crapping you negative.

Xibalba (xibalba), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

do you think they need the money that bad? drunken dare? what could the rationale behind this unholy development possibly be? I'm glad Jello's not involved, but I wish you were just crapping me...

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 22 November 2002 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a video of a VU reunion concert, as well as the double album and it is quite nice and "coyote" which wuz the 1 reunion song is SPECTACULAR and makes the whole enterprise worth it.

Not if it praises My Morning Jacket it isn't.

Pavement hasn't done anything for about 20 years

This says something.

billy corgan's full new year's resolution:

Billy Corgan, frontman of rock band Smashing Pumpkins

For me this will be a make-or-break year. We realize that we have to create an artistic body of work that will lend credibility to everything else. Without that, we're dead in the water. It's like in '92: You knew when Pearl Jam and Nirvana put out major records that either you made a big album or you were dead. I like that kind of clarity. We've set aside time to write between January and March, and stuff could come out late summer or fall.

Nostalgia is a death move. When Sonic Youth and Pavement are out there playing those old records, isn't that throwing up the white flag? The past is going to remain the past. I'm interested in cutting myself off from that temptation. I want to win for real, not with smoke and mirrors.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

otm

btw, Billy, you started this 44-track project at the end of 2009 and have released 7 songs so far, not exactly a track record to take pride in at this point
