Has anyone here ever worked in pirate radio?

1) How did you define your community? 2) Did you get feedback? 3) What were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome?

I've been considering a Park Slope outpost - 1 watt probably, like I know what I'm talking about.

Are ou starting one?

Of course not. Pirate stations degrade the quality of legitimate licensees. But I've got this, uh, friend who is handy with electronics and whatnot, and uh, HE wants to know.

I am realizing that this is perhaps a sensitive subject legal-wise, so if you've got a "spam account" or otherwise anonymous throwaway email address, maybe you ought to use that one.

Hey FCC, I'm over here!!!!

My advice, just don't be around your transmitter when it is transmitting. i.e. tape your show and use a walkman for playback. When they find you (and they will!), at least they won't find YOU.

Do you mean Park Slope, NYC? Good freakin' luck! You oughta be able to operate a good 2 or 3 hours before someone's on top of you there. Too densly populated.

So costs = time + transmitter + walkman each time you get busted... thanx for the tip...

To broaden scope: Do you guys listen to any pirate radio on a regular basis?

Do you feel that they're talking to YOU?

you might want to rent the 80's movie with christian slater about pirate radio (forgot the name) but it was sorta fun.

'Pump Up the Volume'. Decent movie, though not a very realistic depiction of pirate radio. Not like I would know however...

didn't christian slater transmit from his jeep whilst driving around in the final scene? just a idea.

Really not concerned w/ tech details or outlaw image - I'm more interested in what groups are being served and what drives people to it in the first place - a need for public music you can call your own I figure.
