4AD's second worst record was by them

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

TC themselves are Dud, however, the live showcases by 18th street lounge have been nothing but Classic. Sometimes living near DC is kinda nice, even if you're not a Dischord fan.

Thunderball's shows, especially, are a must-see.

Tom Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Boring.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

They are tame and polite and, yes, 'tasteful' so therefore not exactly very useful to me. It's interesting how sampling East Asian instrumentation can be so enthralling in one context and so daft-spy-flick-muzak in another. There's like no disruption in the mix and that makes me feel repressed.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Somehow, their remix album from a few years back, where they applied a dull chill to several pop acts, goes down well with me. Their own records are awful.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Colossally bad. Dud.

JS Williams (js williams), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

still get mild enjoyment out of listening to 'lebanese blonde' but as for their stuff generally, i think i'm pretty much with everyone else who's posted so far.

angelo (angelo), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Boring.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, do we have an ILM (almost) consensus?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

shoot me for this... but thievery corporation are so pre-1999... when lounge was still fresh...then, they rocked. now, that shit is played and sleepy.

TC's best work was compiling the good work of others. both their dj kicks and "abductions and reconstructions" were probably the best records they were involved in...and those are mostly mixes and remixes...

i'll probably continue to own those over time just because they document a resurgence of good sounds... cause i dig lounge and exotica and all points in between quite a bit...those styles have stood the test of time... even tho it's kitschy...

i went to their show with a very attractive person and had fun, so i associate their music less from the single guy staring at the cpu and listening to mp3s but more from a live pulsating sensual experience...

so i say classic. haha, subjectivity rules.

gygax!, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

As Tom said above the live stuff 18th St Lounge live stuff can be fun but the TC albums themselves are incredibly boring. Dud.

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooer missus.

Damian (Damian), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed. Add also this year's "Songs From The Verve Hi Fi" comp, which they compiled. That is good.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i tend to like their stuff. the new album bores me, but the rest are -- at worst -- great background/work music. abductions is probably the best of the lot, tho, but i also love their dj kicks contribution.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

boring and un-sexy. and I still listen to lounge-y stuff from time to time.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought their first album was kind of boring when I sampled it, though lebanese blonde was nice, then a place I ate at a lot bought the album and played it, and it started sounding nicer and nicer.

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

'Until the morning comes' from 'the richest man in babylon' is a wicked song. Had no idea they had so much haters in here but I guess it makes sense... they do sound tame and generic most of the time, I could say the same thing about Royksopp tho and they seem to do well in here.

Moka, Friday, 21 August 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them live in 05 at the height of my ~stoner music~ phase and they pretty well blew my mind. Fwiw at the show I wore cargo shorts, a wife beater & a backwards trucker hat that said POET on the brim.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 22 August 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

Boring as hell.

The kind of music that people who don't like music listen to, not because they like it, but because they think its 'good'.

This is lol btw. Not as a zing of TC, their fans tend to be these dudes & cosmopolitan hippies, its just kinda a bullshit category to invent.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 22 August 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

^awesome blog!

kind of a jam imo

I saw them do this live on Austin City Limits. Damn good performance but it had very little to do with they Thievery Corp guys. The real stars are the sitar player and singer. If you want to get into some good downtempo, check out the Walkner Mostl album on G-Stone.

the Austin City Limits version of Lebanese Blond didn't have the original sing; she had committed suicide. the replacement did an ok but inferior job. the version of Shadows of Ourselves was mesmerizing, prob because the singer is super cute.

lebanese blonde is the best shit they've ever done imo. i have 'versions,' an album of dubby covers with big name collabos, and its not nearly as cool as the idea suggests

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

the Austin City Limits version of Lebanese Blond

Cool. How'd they get J. Mascis to play bass on this?

Viriconium Island Baby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 August 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Or maybe it was Neil from The Young Ones, sorry.

Not the best PR mail subject line, really:
