I kept waiting for this thread to pop up but it's been about two weeks so I guess it's worth making on my own.

I think this is as good (and somewhat in the same field) as Saadiq's new one: a wide-ranging by genre, virtuosic, cleverly scripted, exploration of identity. Spiced heavily with moments of ecstasy, agony, pride and indignation. Howard's voice is an amazing instrument and - with the possible exception of the "Unchained Melody by way of Prince" final track - there's not a weak link in the chain. I think it's likely to be one of my faves of the year.

Surely I'm not the only one enjoying this so much?

Feel like a lot of people on this borad would be into her; she covers a lot of critical and creative ground. She's also funny, joyous and 420 friendly!

I liked them live quite a bit but Alabama Shakes never completely landed for me like this album did.

it's a good album for sure. doesn't have the highs of sound & color imo, but it's really well-made and heartfelt. i mentally filed brittany/the shakes into a box after their first album, but she/they've really grown beyond the initial sound without losing that grounded and soulful element that makes them special.

It's a great album, I like it more than AS. And having the best drummer (Nate Smith) on the whole album is just a treat. He gets to Nate Smith it up on 13th Century Metal.
The Shawn Everett production/mix makes me think of it as related to the last Perfume Genius record, which was of course amazing.

How'd I sleep on this album?? Love it. Surprised it didn't get more traction here.

It's a modern classic, it was on highest rotation in my household.

Loving the new tunes, especially the Nate Smith of it all, looking forward to the album.

I missed that the album actually came out a month ago, didn't see a word about it anywhere. Is that because people aren't feeling it or just this modern world?

I think its just this modern world. It got plenty of good reviews and even a Best New Music from whatever is left of Pitchfork.

I’ve never found the Shakes interesting at all but this new album of hers is great. Lots of Prince vibes, a little jazz, and the last track is giving late-era Radiohead.

Agree w all that (except never had prob w Al Ahakes);Blown out of an old-ass rainy day jaded haze by this sunburst of an album: rays all around, bold and perfectly timed seems like (first listen) Yeah, Prince for sure, maybe Sault-like at times: alt r&b (w her rock experience, guitar etc.) beyond nostalgia and/or makes you work for it, wistful moments seem drawn from and toward personal, but musical results not obscure (so a bit beyond some of Simney's more proggy delvings). wiki article on this saz
What Now received a score of 88 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on fourteen critics' reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[1]
In the review for Pitchfork, Claire Shaffer declared that, "Every song here, even the slow stuff, feels giant and propulsive—a grand celestial tour of rock and R&B, guided by one of the few singers and multi-instrumentalists with the range and intuition to pull it off." Going into detail, Shaffer described Howard's songwriting as, "construct[ing] narratives that start from an impressionistic fragment of a feeling—uncertainty, indignation, crushing desire—and lets the music take you the rest of the way."[17]
