hype sticker appreciation thread!

i'm a nerd and i love those stickers on album packaging that proclaim the album's awesomeness. yes, i save them!

i'll start with this one because it's the most recent one i've encountered.

this one's quite fitting for the album it's advertising imo. though i'm not sure i would have attached the adjective "crunch" to hiphop in the 80s.

I'll post my copy of it later but I'm forever grateful for this particular issue of the album

...since it featured my AMG review of it on the hype sticker.

love this one from nu amerykah part one. 'honey' isn't listed on the song order on the back, but it was technically the lead single.

still wanting to know what the "more" was on this one, as i'm pretty sure it covered everything pretty well without that added on.

I love the one on this Voivod album (I can't work out how to link the big cover image so you'll have to click on small version):

Kinda like the redundancy of this one, right under "The Kids Are Alright" listed as one of the tracks...

this one makes me feel really sad and proud simultaneously.

and then sometimes the labels would just skip the sticker and print it directly on the cover.

A musician friend put a hype sticker on a CD release with made-up review quotes from nonexistent publications (e.g., "Moscow Jazz Weekly"). It was pretty hilarious when he started getting reviews that favorably quoted the fictitious outlets ("Vladimir from the Moscow Jazz Weekly is right -- this is great stuff").

still wanting to know what the "more" was on this one, as i'm pretty sure it covered everything pretty well without that added on.

I guess a few of the recordings ("Hard Times in New York Town"; "Wallflower") aren't technically "outtakes" or "demos." Also, while "Last Thoughts on Woodie Guthrie" is indeed "live," I would categorize it as something altogether "more"....

Speaking of Dylan, there are two good stickers on this baby (I miss "The Nice Price"):

This was on a bunch of MCA records starting in the '80s. It started as a hype sticker, but then they started printing it right on the sleeve, obscuring/altering the artwork. Pretty annoying.

That kind of sticker is kind of a mixed blessing, when you're giving an album as a gift. I remember once gifting my dad a CD with Columbia's "The Nice Price" sticker, and he said, "I see you bought this at... 'The Nice Price'."

Spry at 78 (morrisp), Wednesday, 9 October 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

XP Sometimes MCA would go further with that. There's a budget version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that's just the two records in a wide sleeve, eliminating all the gatefold art.

Yep, they did that with '80s reissues of '70s reissues of early Who records, too. My Generation and Magic Bus used to come in a gatefold, but in the '80s they crammed two records into a single sleeve, with a sheet of paper illustrating that which had previously been the inner gatefold art.

Not a hype sticker, but in light of the this thread, I had to laugh when this album art was just presented to me.

I save them too! I try to peel them off and affix then to the jewel case or sometimes in a black spot inside the booklet. When that fails, I'll cut them out with the plastic and insert them into the booklet.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 October 2019 03:34 (five years ago) link

My CD copy of Flowers of Romance has a ‘Compact Price’ insert on the bottom right of the cover, but it’s actually part of the booklet? Not sure how common this particular phenomenon is.

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 10 October 2019 03:55 (five years ago) link

A lot of early MCA CDs had the budget-line badging added to the cover art, and the back page of the booklet had an ad for other Albums in the series.
