songs based on misunderstandings of other songs

For example:
- Paul McCartney recalls writing "Helter Skelter" after reading a review of The Who Sell Out in which the critic claimed that "I Can See for Miles" was the "heaviest" song he had ever heard. McCartney had not heard the song, but wrote "Helter Skelter" in an attempt to make an even "heavier" song than the one praised in the review.
- Talking Heads' "The Overload" being an attempt to emulate the sound of British post-punk band Joy Division, despite no band member having heard the music of Joy Division; rather, it was based on an idea of what the British quartet might sound like based on descriptions in the music press.
- Shane McGowan mishearing someone asking him if he'd heard "The Turkey Song" by the Damned and then coming up with "Turkish Song of the Damned"

I'm sure that this is better than what might have resulted if Joy Division had tried to make a song that sounded like Talking Heads without hearing them first.

Steve Miller’s “The Joker” - “pompatus of love” is based on a mishearing of “puppetutes of love” in “The Letter” by the Medallions (puppetutes itself being a made up word)
