Considering the original pre-rock definition of the word 'punk', isn't it surprising that there aren't more songs featuring the unpleasant topic of homosexual rape as their subject matter? I can only think of Tool's "Prison Sex" and PiL's "Poptones". And "Jailhouse Rock" of course. Also, I wonder if any gangsta rappers have alluded to this area of the US correctional experience, aside from the Geto Boys' "Size Ain't Shit".

There've GOTTA be some Palace/Oldham/BPB songs in this vein.

Beers, Steers and Queers - Revolting Cocks, and Martin are a couple off the top of my head who use THAT sample. Maybe 'Rent' - Pet Shop Boys, by discussing the economics of the situation they rather delicately skirt the subject.
But I'd imagine the boyz'll have something to say about Turbonegro (again, the novelty of typing that word far exceeds the thrill of the music)

Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy had "The Language Of Violence" which I'm sure implies that its bigoted protagonist himself suffers prison rape. I can't remember the lyrics though cause I sold my copy of the album. That was the song I played my grandmother to convince her hip- hop was worthwhile.

The novelty of saying Turbonegro out loud far exceeds the thrill of typing it. They've got "Rock Against Ass", "Get It On" ("gimme friction, baby!"), "Zillion Dollar Sadist", "Prince of the Rodeo" ("fornicator of the lasso"), "Back To Dungaree High", and "Rendezvous With Anus", but none of those are about rape. "Midnight NAMBLA" is, but who's to say man-boy love is really rape? Who's to say the topic is unpleasant? It's not when Turbonegro tackles it (it is when Will Oldham does though).

'Poptones' is about homosexual rape? I thought it was about a picnic.

Momus, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The alernate version of "Do You Love Me?" on LET LOVE IN tells an unsettling yarn about sexual molestation of a minor in a movie theatre (something about "the rustle of fabric and up and down," etc.) Charming.

OOps...that being by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, of course.

alex in nyc, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish I had Plastic Box at my disposal, 'cause Lydon explains "Poptones" in the liners. I don't recall homosexual rape being in the subject matter, either. Something about a murder? Maybe I'm getting it mixed up with "Fish Fry".

"Well Fancy That" by The Funboy Three - unwanted sexual advances from male teacher during school trip to France.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re Andrew L's contribution - the topic of same-sex harassment - AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" ("You wanna graduate, but not in his bed"). The gender of the harassee is not mentioned, but considering the name of the band it's an open question.

I find very disturbing the idea that Palace and Oldham have anything particular to do with homosexual rape. Roger Palmer and George Wood must be turning in their rocking chairs.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has someone mentioned Ice Cube's "No Vaseline"?

Mark, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AC/DC took their name from the back of a vaccum cleaner, not as a sly wink-wink, nudge-nudge reference to their sexuality. If you look at their lyrical cannon overall, it's abundantly clear that they couldn't be more heterosexual if they tried. That's not a slight nor an accolade, just an observation.

alex in nyc, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yet another Nick Cave reference (and Australian like AC/DC...ooh, a pattern forming here): On MURDER BALLADS, Cave's quite rude rendition of "Stagger Lee" finds the estimable Mr.Lee exclaiming: "I'm a bad motherfucker don't you know, I'll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get to one fat boy's asshole." He said it, I didn't.

alex in nyc, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AC/DC - "Big Balls", "She's Got Balls", "Got You By the Balls", "Ballbreaker" - could almost be Turbonegro, except fixated on the scrotal rather than the anal? Maybe they should do one of those men's-cancer-awareness things?

tarden, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sublime - 'date rape' - date rapist gets jailed, gets buggered. the guards pay no attention to his cries.

Prince Takeru, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have a feeling if someone started a thread tallying the best songs about male-to- female rape that things would be very upset around here. why any different for 'homosexual rape'? what's next, a 'worst fags ever' thread?

ethan, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't Angus Young go to a private school ("public school" as it's called in the UK), hence the silly school-boy uniform? If so, do Australian private schools have the same, um, "reputation" as British public schools?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well Ethan, since you brought it up - "Midnight Rambler", of course. But that's not the thread, so don't mention it again.

tarden, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re Australia - I don't think the public-school thing is as significant as the country's origins as a penal colony.

, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another admirer of Tom's recent, brilliant Loafer's Discourse on his public school experiences, then?

I'd admire him for getting out the other side if that piece was all I knew about him, and this is not a fawning fanboy statement.
