so there's this instagram called Petals For Armor whose first follower is the official Paramore instagram. Some believe the name is an imperfect anagram for Last of Paramore (Last of paremorr). It's a lot of grainy nature footage and the url in the bio links to a video of a monarch butterfly. Something seems to be up.

I would accept that! A while back, Hayley did a post on instagram and it was kinda like "here are just some pictures of things around my house that make me happy." One pic was houseplants, then some mirrors, then a couple of synths, then a picture of her dog..." And ever since then, I've been secretly praying for Hayley to drop a Jane Weaver-style psych pop record or something.

Also the one-note humming sample reminds me of the "ha ha ha ha" from O Superman. See also the harmonized vocals on "con-trol" and "eyes closed" in the chorus, although Hayley isn't nearly as vocodored.

"paramore is a band" (as opposed to hayley&co) was a constant refrain when they were still active as well. part of their dramatic landscape, slight overprotestation and all. wouldn't be a bad title no.

Realize this probably sounds intentionally contrarian but I'm enjoying Flowers for Vases way more than I ever took to Petals (which outside of "Simmer" never landed for me). Yes, some of these tracks can feel like sketches but there's some downright lovely music and emotions here that are laid bare in a truly intimate recording.

I'm kind of obsessed with "Over These Hills." What a perfect, simple (but not too simple -- that modulation is key!) little song.

I never got around to listening to this. When it came out, I had grown pretty tired of Petals for Armor and wasn't really interested in an acoustic singer-songwriter version of same. But today, I decided I needed an autumnal album and this one was easy to reach for. Just listened to it twice. It was just what I needed and a lot better than I expected.

Hayley posted on her IG a pic of her with Moses Sumney, which suggests a collab is coming, very intriguing combo

This is a smidge overstuffed, and I lost some of my focus halfway through, but I like it a lot!

Wow this is banger after banger.

This does start to thin in the second half but the first half is by far the best Williams solo material and I’d go so far as to say I prefer to the last Paramore record and Brand New Eyes. Really sharp pop hooks, great experimentation, and a lot of vulnerability in the lyrics.

I really did not like the last Paramore record. I tried to convince myself I liked it, because I had pre-ordered it. But boy, oh boy, it just wasn't for me. This. Is Why. I Don't Pre-order Records Anymore!

TIW would have been a flawless record if they'd cut ""The News" and extended that gorgeous flute outro to "Big Man, Little Dignity" another minute. otherwise, no notes.

Fair enough. Could be that it's just not for you! I find the first half or so to be really compelling. The back half has some very good moments too, but also, I am never going to going to listen to 18 tracks of this, Ms. Williams.

I listened to most of the new one ("Ego Death ...") and it sounded kinda generic to me. I really, really liked the Petals For Armor stuff, which was quirkier.

I don't think I need to return to this in the long-term, nothing unpleasant, just unremarkable. I did smile at the idea of keeping some space on a 18-track album to do a cover of Discovery Channel.

Hayley and producer Daniel James were on Tape Notes this week, discussing the making of Kill Me, Love Me Different, and Parachute. Pretty fun episode.

ok yeah this record is better than i thought on first blush. still have to screen out a lot of the lyrics lol. it's fucked that i went from recoiling at "discovery channel" to thinking that's about the least embarrassing way to interpolate that song if you have to

this strikes me as the actual follow-up to petals for armor. lots of genre play and bold choices. i might still prefer descansos as a mood piece and a set of songs but

"showbiz" is absolutely the best song tho. can't believe it was a second bonus track

I thought her "Discovery Channel" sounded a lot like Fugazi's "Blueprint," but minus the catharsis.

Earlier this year, I blathered quite a bit about The Happy Fits in other threads. And just to be clear, their new album continues to kick my ass. Hand to god, I can't stop listening. But I thought it was a very cool revelation that, when she was a teenager, their guitarist, Raina Mullen, was one of those fortunate youthful hopefuls who had been pulled up on stage to sing the Misery Business lyrics.

Also, she did not succeed in procuring Hayley solo tickets and cried. :(
