Which band would you like to make a record about your life right now? And which band's records is it most actually like?

Tom, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a effeimante homosexual who works nights as a gas jockey and days as a studentin contempary art history. I am broke and like to think i am clever. I would like it to be a musical book by Tom T Hall music by Belle and Sebastion.

anthony, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like my life to be like an autechre record, EP7 in particular. It is in fact somewhere between depressing Bruce Springsteen and uplifting Mogwai. I would most enjoy a record about my life by Luck & Neat, I think.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like: I dunno...Royal Trux? :) Maybe The Gentle Waves.

Actually like: 'Moon Safari' and 'Discovery' are about my life really.

Omar, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like Turbonegro to reform to make a record about my life, and I'd like to think my life is like a Gluecifer record, but in actuality it's exactly like "Hopeless Case of a Kid in Denial" by the Hellacopters. I suck.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a) Shellac b) Bay City rollers

Geoff, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Queen. Or Styx.

JM, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Beatles. THen I'd be a star forever.

Mike Hanley, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An esteemed contributor to ILM.

(and this is a genuine answer, not something I fantasise about happening. But it's my duty to be secretive.)

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quite agree, Robin. Pinefox's head is big enough as it is. ;)

I would like the album of my life right now to have lyrics by Jarvis Cocker and music by Daft Punk. Unfortunately I suspect it has music by Tortoise and lyrics by David Gedge.

Tom, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

euroboy would play you in the movie, otis. sucker.

in beautiful theory, my life would be like a busta rhymes video and would be a jay-z song, produced by timbaland of course.

in reality, though, it's probably a big star song. and not even from the third album either.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. I suppose I would like a collaboration between Merritt and Wheeler. With Johnny Marr in the background as long as he promised not to turn up the volume too often, and never to mention the Order of the Golden Dawn.

2. I think that the bands that come closest to describing the story of my life are probably the Foxgloves and the Pines.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It would be a fun torture to make certian artists do life story tributes to people. Like if Garth Brooks did me. Boy woudl I be pissed! THis is a good form of punishment.

Mike Hanley, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You watched that 70's show last night, didn't you?

proton, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like The Donnas could do my life (suggested titles: 'I Don't Wanna Do More Research' and 'I Wanna Move to Perth'). Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Vic Chesnutt: probably closer to the truth. As it stands, though, the Mountain Goats would be closest of all.

Methyl Salicylate, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all good responces...but...ethan can agree that the ultimate single on your album would be a song with Trick Daddy ft. Slip and Slide about "taking it to the house".

not reallty, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suppose Luke Haines. This would be a perfect fit if he had grown up in an environment similar to mine, which surely isn't the case.

I'll take the fifth on the second. I'd probably come up with some band known for horribly depressing music. Wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong impression.

Andy, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it would be really swell if Calexico did a record about my life, because then it would have a neat noir western edge, and I'd get to dance around with a rose clenched between my teeth. Plenty of heartbreak, but stylishly so. Plus I'd have an excuse to drink more. Because I work in computer publishing, however, my life probably resembles something more along the lines of ... oh, Devo. The bad era. Lame.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My life is a duet between Will Oldham and Phil Collins.

Patrick, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robert Smith smears lipstick all over Marc Almond while Martin Gore sings and Kevin Shields plays guitar. Then I wake up.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're a sick man, Ned. I love it.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you, I try.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like the Appetite era Guns N' Roses to make an album that had similar subject matter as Wilco's "Being There" (nothing angry).

, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thomas Bangalter and Philip Zdar back-to-back with a Marvin Gaye Anthology, cause there's only a heartbeat's difference between me and him (this is only true when I'm off my face). If it has to be an artist of the moment... then I want the Avalances cutting up my book case and vocoding a spoken word record, on which AFX and Vladislav Delay share production.

K-reg, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like Henry's Dress to reform an make an album about me, just shouty pop songs about me walking my dog in the park, watching Neighbours and writing essays. At the moment I guess the song that sums up my life would be "busy doing nothing" by the beach boys or "thumb" by dinosaur jr. I think my life is probably best summarised by dinosaur jr songs, being slightly ineffectual but feeling okay about it.

james e l, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Shangri-Las. It would be completely melodramatic and overblown and have lots of motorcycle chases and bad boys and handclaps and teary mascara. Just like me. Heh.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to make a record about my own life, not let some lame ass weirdos I don't even know do it. But if someone had to do it, it'd probably be Blur just to piss me off.

Ally, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

would like methods of muthafukin mayhem to do me, but i itd be more tom waits in gun street girl vein - but in a northumbrian border ballad stylee with tickell on the fuckin pipes

geordie racer, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not working with the Pinefox, Tom ...

(Robert Wyatt wrote my life, but Swizz Beatz produced it)

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'd have to be a sort of soundtrack, I think. Elastica could do the bits where I walk around feeling cooler than everyone, The Divine Comedy could write the love song aspects, Pulp could do the sex, and Cibo Matto (Butter 08-era) would write about my angry moments.

Alexis Dicks, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd love to have the Boredoms work up something about my life. They have the range for it, certainly.

What it's actually like...well, my life from the outside could be covered well by Dolly Parton. The life from the inside would be more of a job for Janek Schaefer.

Mark, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Detroit Cobras. Cause I'm a bad man, I do the cha-cha twist wonderfully, always got the midnite blues, live in a summer slum, am just like putty in *her* hands and I'll definitely keep holding on...

Simon Cobra, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Naked City would be a great band to make a concept record about one's life. The teenage years in particular would be pretty interesting. But most likely it'd be The Smiths, all burning angst set to a poppy background.

Dave M., Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would probably love to have Can make a record about my life (but I don't know who I'd have sing). Whose records is it most actually like? Well, my life right now is slow and relaxed on the outside, but bubbling and excited on the inside--who would fit that bill? Maybe Mogwai--their music is deceptively simple on the surface, but there's a lot going on "inside" or "underneath." On second thought, maybe it's just because I've been listening to them nonstop as of late. (Life : Art :: Clarke : Mogwai?) God I'm a geek.

Clarke B., Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I decided last night that the story of my life was "More Than A Feeling" by Boston.

Ally, Tuesday, 29 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr. E and his lovely Eels. Sad and simple with a few shots of funny.

bnw, Tuesday, 29 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like it to be by Ludacris and Goodie Mob, but I heard Prince Paul's the one actually doing it and he hired Galaxie 500 to do the tracks.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think i'd like it to be by nelly or daft punk or sonz of a loop da loop era.

unfortunately i think it would probably be by an amalgamation of the wedding present, the fieldmice and half man half biscuit...

gareth, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I decided to actually answer this question...in glamourous theory, the theory presented to much of the world, my life is a Jay-Z song (the fun ones, not the depressing ones) with a few spots of random punky songs thrown in, plus "Vogue". Except in reality it's some horrific cross between Britney Spears and Tori Goddamned Amos. I should off myself now, but as long as I have "Oops I Did It Again" in my life playlist, I'll survive. Whingy bint has to go though.

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funny, I never pictured you kicking bitches out of your bed at 6 AM ;)

Patrick, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You shoulda seen me two weeks ago, Patrick, jesus.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish it were that any given mid-30's Duke Ellington record WAS my life right now: spontaneous but assured, sexy, endlessly fascinating. But it's more like...hasn't Steely Dan got a new album? Plastic...

pat kraus, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Syd Barrett as joint-produced by Lewis A. Martinee and Mike Clink

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(or Steve Albini, if Clink's not around)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamn, I'm embarassed to admit that in high school/early college I would have wanted the Afghan Whigs to do it. ugh. But it was very Lou Barlow then.

Now it's very Local H. I want Good Charlotte to handle it though.
