Prediction: The New Lighting Bolt LP - stays in genre ghetto? underground smash hit? or 2003 - the year NOISE broke

I predict this album will be given widespread aclaim in the indie music press and be a relatively popular underground hit, but will not break into the mainstream.

Lightning Bolt could be the Nirvana of noise though.

''Lightning Bolt could be the Nirvana of noise though.''

a couple of ppl on drone on went wild abt this LP.

but first you say they will not 'break' and then you cite 'nirvana' which broke into mainstream. explain?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

hahahahahahahaha!!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm saying the potential exists for a minastream breakthrough but it is not going to happen.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, first off, what label is releasing it? I wouldn't mind them becoming more well known, they're a nice burst of sound, they are.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure it is going to be Load records.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

who gives a shit if they listen

Julio Babbit (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan, are you sure you want to make such a startling claim as, "[Lightning Bolt] will not break into the mainstream?" I mean, this is a HUGE FUCKING STATEMENT!

On a side note, the Blood Brothers have a good shot to break the mainstream. No question, with the MTV2 tour thing and being on Artist Direct.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

That's just my prediction.

Looking at my mp3 list at home for blood brothers seems to indicate that they were in a Tony Hawk game!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the noise crowd already had their breakthough... andrew wk.

subpop had distro connections with caroline by the time nirvana broke. they had a mechanism to get the merch in the major chain stores. i don't see too many albums by Load getting in there. Bulb/Hanson didn't either... so andrew wk stepped up to mercury to get his record out.

i mean... the fact that matt st. germaine (of the freedom from label) was on jackass because of his friendship with andrew has to mean something.

lightning bolt can and perhaps will get written up in spin and/or rolling stone, but will the decisions be made to up the marketing of the merch to breakthrough?

msp, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

has geffen heard their recs.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope the record does well, but Lightning Bolt can't get too much bigger and continue to do what they do. I mean, the band's audience these days is pretty unbearable. Every recent show seems to come within a few seconds of disaster because the crowd almost slams into the Brians and their equipment. Can you imagine Lightning Bolt playing on the floor of a Bowery Ballroom-sized venue to legions of mosh-happy fans? They'd be crushed.

I'm actually curious how they'll handle things when they play with Sonic Youth and Black Dice later this month.

^Diego^ (dhadis), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

PS I can see Blood Brothers getting big way before Lightning Bolt ever would. They're pretty terrible, though...

^Diego^ (dhadis), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yr so wrong about the Blood Brothers, Diego. They are fucking FANtastic.

Agreed on your LB part though.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

for one, instrumental music does not sell unless vangelis, big herb alpert, or ... i'm drawing blanks for a more recent rock instrumental that enjoyed chart success... pulp fiction gave new life to surf music but that's about it.

for two, nobody cares about this band except for a few thousand people who coincidentally are rabid internet users.

msp is right on the money... AWK is the noise representative to the new guard of music, although most of his fans would find his previous output a little offsetting compared to the good feelin' bombast.

no radio station will play it. justin talks about blood brothers being on sublabel of epitaph (with major distro)... that's about as big as it's gonna get.

gygax!, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Lightning Bolt has been in Spin.

As far as the large upcoming shows, I've heard a few rumors as to what they'll do.

MOVING PLATFORM ABOVE THE CROWD.
HAVE ORTHRELM, PINK & BROWN, AND WOLF EYES PLAY ALONG WITH THEM (HAHAAHHA)
PLAY IN THE BATHROOM

I think lightning bolt could get some mainstream appeal if they mix the distorted vocals higher in the mix... I'd like that!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU ARE IN A DULL ALTERNATE UNIVERSE!

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

my beef with the blood brothers is that it's just more of the same san diego thing... more antioch arrow and angelhair... as if that hasn't been done to death.

i suppose it's what you've been exposed to over the years.

perhaps bb will break with that sound ... cause the bands they sound like are pretty gone and will never be back. bb would probably fit on a ozzfest type of deal. of course, that's not gonna propel anyone into nirvana heights.

it's just not catchy enough.

msp, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The new album is much catchier, and with a major-label push I could see it breaking... Not huge by any means, but get some solid M2 airplay and get on a few big tours.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

get onto geffen...those guys will make yr dreams come true!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it worked for Loud Lucy & Swervedriver.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

all this talk of LB's new album - has it been leaked? is it on soulseek? I'd be interested in hearing it, it's hard to wait until february.

paul ziemba, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been promised a CDR of early mixes but I haven't heard it.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Lightning Bolt play with Wolf Eyes, Arab on Radar, and the Locust this summer, and Lightning Bolt was by far the worst. They were no good at all. It was so uninteresting. I've heard tons of local hardcore bands do similar things.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Lightning Bolt play with Wolf Eyes, Arab on Radar, and the Locust this summer, and Lightning Bolt was by far the worst.

Not to be snarky, but that's saying a lot!!

Lightning Bolt haven't really captured me either. Still, I'd like to hear a new album and give it another go.

original bgm, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Lightning Bolt sucks ____

in large venues
after touring for a while

I saw the pretour show and it was amazing. They mvoed the show into the center of the street outside the club and people danced on cars!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard tons of local hardcore bands do similar things.

yeah... but the difference probably is that those bands are probably aping LB....

LB is hardly new... most well-treaded hardcore kids had probably heard their stuff by last summer...

msp, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

or 98-99 for that matter.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't emerson lake & palmer the noise breakthrough? (a "plush" ruins album?). LB have the pop hooks and the kill rock stars(ish) "schtick" so it could maybe? (ie. never in a million years unless they start doing some Xtina stuff w/ the knickers/chaps thing & dancers & that would be nice if it happened cos then you'd get mick barr doing guitar breaks on the next sophie ellis bextor album maybe? flying luttenbachers show every saturday evening maybe just after blind date?

bob snoom, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

weren't the locust approached by the majors?

that would be funny to see a 27 second long blast/grind video on MTV.

gygax!, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The Locust signed, according to Buddyhead.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

that would be funny to see a 27 second long blast/grind video on MTV.

yeah... that way the time between commercials can be even shorter...

msp, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

To get any bigger than they are now, I think they'll have to do more catchy songs like 13 Monsters. That doesn't seem to be the direction the new material is going.

Dave Fischer, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Can you imagine Lightning Bolt playing on the floor of a Bowery Ballroom-sized venue to legions of mosh-happy fans? They'd be crushed.

We'll all find out tonight now, won't we? Playing at Lupo's in Providence, which has a ridiculously high capacity. I'd venture a guess into the range of 700+. And the crowds are getting ridiculous--even the 'secret' show the other night was packed (though the venue was v. tiny.)

I sort of wonder how much of their popularity is based on the 'hipness' factor--nowhere near that number of people were there to see Mindflayer when they played recently, or Lord Sun Sun when he played.

But will they break into the mainstream? No. Given that at Ocean's the other night they played an excruciatingly long, Lungfish-esque heavy metal dirge (which I think is one of the new ones, though I could be wrong..) they won't be getting much airplay with that. On the other hand, they've been spotted on the local music show on WBRU.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 23 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been told that the North Six show last summer was around 700, even though the club's official capacity is 300. That was a fun show. Did BRU really play them?

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 23 November 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave--

I haven't heard it myself, but according to my friend Eli they were indeed played on "Home Brewed" or whatever their lame local music show is. Probably played between Pickle Spill and Itchy Fish or something.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 24 November 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, here we go.... the voice of Joe BRU, public discussion fomurs at BRU's web site:

I guarrantee That if I ask any of my friends or anyone I know from CT or NYC they would not have clue who any of these bands are. Don't get me wrong I like local music I would love it if one of you all made it out of there but come on "the lightning bolts" who the hell are they.

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 24 November 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA (sorry)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 November 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just picturing Lightning Bolt reborn as a greasy-hair/skinny-tie New York RAWK band, and rechristened "The Lightning Bolts."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. It's funny as hell. It's easy to forget what people outside of a tiny subculture see. Hey - are you the person that made a comparison between The Rah Bras and Nina Hagen in a review earlier this year? I thought that was a great comparison, and one that had never occured to me, even though I'm a huge fan of both of them.

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 24 November 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I'm probably Seattle-biased here, but I agree with everything Yancey has said so far. LB bore me. Blood Brothers make me smile.. though I can see how they could grate on others re: well manicured hardcore boys, cat in heat screeching, antioch arrow, etc. (Yancey, you're making me jealous about the new album)

If anything, my ulterior motive for Blood Bros. becoming big is so some of the other furious locals here like Akimbo, Teen Chthulu, Swarming Hordes, The Whip, etc. will get some passing recognition.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 24 November 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably. I don't remember making that particular comparison, but I've talked about the Rah Bras.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 November 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

WTF? Itchy Fish is still around? Dayumn - that's some fucking longevity.

Jusging from the crowd reaction to Lightning Bolt last night, I could see them possibly reaching a Pavement level of popularity. It seemed like very few people left after Sonic Youth. The level of crowd involvement was pretty impressive (probably the most crushed I have ever felt at a show).

They didn't play 13 Monsters. (Was this because they didn't want to play it or they knew the crowd would be unmanageable?) Without another song as catchy as 13 Monsters, I don't seem them getting much more popular.

Holy shit that was fun though!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 24 November 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I think their set got cut short by the amp problems, so maybe they would have played 13 Monsters. They did make an aborted attempt at Two Towers, which is probably their most dancey song. Photos are up.

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

is it better becuz they signed to geffen?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, they signed to Fat Wreck, not Geffen. Jesus.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 30 December 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)
