Is Azzido Da Bass-Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix) a 90s record?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

no Ronan, surfaced in 2000 i'm pretty sure

Voodoo Ray was 1988/89

corrections to the chart:

it was 2 Bad Mice not Two Blind Mice
it was 187 Lockdown NOT 911 Lockdown
Human Resource is in there twice...so unless one version is 'The Complete Dominator' or the wicked Joey Beltram mix then you need a replacement ('Papua New Guinea' perhaps?)

Siegbran, Kristine W did OK in the charts and a few of her tracks were big in the handbag/hardbag clubs (probably big Trade anthems), caned by the likes of Sister Bliss especially

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Doom's Night is from 2000.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgent and Key, who will find all 100 records and mix them perfectly.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

One "Dominator" is the original, the other is the Beltram mix. (Failing that, replace one with "Give It Up").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Jacques Your Body by LRD?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

more classics

Marmion 'Schoneberg'
CJ Bolland 'Carmargue'
Leftfield - take your pick!
Coldcut 'More Beats & Pieces'
Primal Scream 'Dont Fight It Feel It'
Way Out West 'Domination'
808 State 'Ski Family'
Shut Up & Dance 'Derek Went Mad'
Prodigy - again, take your pick
L.F.O. - LFO
Depth Charge - Bounty Killers
Zero B - Lock Up
Havana - Shift
Jaydee - Plastic Dreams
Chemical Brothers - My Mercury Mouth
Tori Amos - Professional Widow (armands star trunk funk mix)
Sound Corporation 'Dreamfinder'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgent and Key, who will find all 100 records and mix them perfectly

i'd give it a go! watch out Trevor Jackson...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck, LFO indeed!

CJ Bolland - The Prophet is of course his 'classic' track...

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha!

Hybrid - Finished Symphony

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

That Armand Van Helden remix of CJ Bolland-Sugar is Sweeter

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"Plastic Dreams" made it in at 48. Leftfield is another one that I'm glad got overlooked (I feel validated regarding several previous arguments about them on ILM).

I've realized that there are several artists (Underworld, Daft Punk) that were mentioned on the 90s singles list that I forgot to mention here because I was mixing those two lists up in my mind. Grr.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives
Three Drives On A Vinyl - Greece 2000
Peter Heller - Big Love
CRW - I Feel Love

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'd pick Santa Cruz by Fatboy Slim, or I'm Going Out Of My Head maybe....

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Being the 90's list it misses out a load of great stuff which came out 86-89. Which if you're going to be canonical about dance music is like doing a list of rock'n roll singles and ignoring everything pre 1960.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

thats the good thing about a 90s list on dance tho, you dont have to worry about including 'strings of life', 'clear', 'big fun' or indeed 'pacific state' (tho the 98 remix was kinda cool)

and for fecks sake Leftfield did 'Not Forgotten', 'Space Shanty', 'Song For Life', 'Storm 3000' and 'Open Up' - all would qualify for a top 100 quite readily i say

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

(tho only 3 of em were singles)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

not enough French disco on here either:

Cassius 'La Mouche (Dj Falcon mix) - i'm mentioning this so ronan doesnt have to ;)
Alan Braxe - Vertigo
Super Discount - Le Patron Est Devene Foux!
Etienne de Crecy - Prix Choc
Thomas Bangalter - Spinal Scratch (yes! yes! Yes!)
Bob Sinclar & Bangalter - Gym Tonic

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

and OH - MY - GOD - Armand Van Helden's 'Witch Dokta'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

52. Austin - I get high.
-- Billy Dods (butterbubble9@hotmail.com) (webmail), November 20th, 2002 5:41 AM. (Billy Dods) (link)

one of those moments where you're so happy cos someone else know a tune you thought only you knew for years!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaarrrgh! This thread is pointless and I'm trying not to post, but "Philly" by Fluke hasn't been mentioned. I know there's a backlash against dad-house, but bloody hell...

A surprising number of your supposed old schoolers were actually released in the 90s but I'm too weak to identify them. Oh God, "Show Me Love", then. "You've Got The Love".

You really are a bunch of cheesy quavers, aren't you?

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone please tell me what's so great about the Stardust song?

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

no Curtis, its a secret

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but some clues

the double guitar lick = like a 'call and response', its instantly recognisable in pop linguistics and comforting as a result

the chord pattern - first three parts are the same, fourth and last one is the chord change - its like climbing a staircase to heaven and every fourth part is where you take that step up - the other three are the nice rest you have before repeating the process

the way Ben Diamond sounds like he's singing underwater, and he has a great distinctive voice

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

All I am saying is: Flash - "Fix"
Yeaaaah!

Conor (Conor), Thursday, 21 November 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I missed it, but is it possible that nobody mentioned "The Original Nuttah" by Shy FX and UK Apache?! What about Ray Keith and Renegade "Terrorist"?

This list though is a good cross-section of what was going on at the end of the last century. 'Nuff respect to everyone who submitted old skool 'ardkore tracks for consideration.

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(best thread ever)

Stardust is all about what isn't there, as much as what is, the guitar riffs are chopped up and stuck together again, it's like a mini funk rollercoaster in between each line, and then there's the drum break which is also the greatest thing ever, drains the colour out of the song and then pauses for breath, before letting back in all at once.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be a great thing if someone could make me a cd of these songs. Any takers?????? Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Not all 100 but some of the best ones!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

the number 1 track isnt really that amazing actually - a pretty good summary of jungle as a whole but certainly no better than about 200 other great tracks of the genre e.g. most other ZInc remixes/productions including 'super sharp shooter' and 'reach out'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

More criminal omissions:

Dave Clarke - 'Red 2'
Aphrohead - 'In thee dark we live'
Wildchild - 'Renegade Master' (not the fatboy one)
MAW - 'I can't get no sleep'
Infiniti - 'Game one'
Plastikman - 'Spastik'
Ramsey and Fen - 'Style'
Billie Ray Martin - 'Your loving arms'
Krust - 'War Head'

Very UK-centric choices...

Jacob, Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm kicking myself for nominating paperclip people's "throw" instead of "4 my peepz", which i prefer. i've never heard the # 1. let's face it, there's LOADS more ("dred bass" dead dred/"altered state" ron trent/"some lovin" liberty city/"starlight" model 500/"deliver me" ubp/"tonite" those guys/"at les" carl craig/"new day" round 2/"you can't hide from your bud" dj sneak/etc/etc/etc/ad infinitum) but it's a bit of a brainstorm and that's going to happen. i'm all for dance discussion on ilm, though, let's hope this kick-starts some more.

p.s. ronan (aka connor, hahaha) fatboy slim gets NOWHERE NEAR this chart, kapeesh?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

("Song For Life" is the only worthwhile Leftfield track: True or False?)

I thought about mentioning Fluke, honestly...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I've started working on two Trevor Jackson-style megamixes (ie, 200 tracks, 20 seconds each): a 2002 megamix and a 1990-1999 retrospective inspired by this thread. It's a monstrous task though, and my mixing/editing skills are patchy to say the least. But it's a lot of fun...

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone? bueller?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

("Song For Life" is the only worthwhile Leftfield track: True or False?)

no, that would be "not forgotten" or djum djum "difference" which was kind of leftfield.

however, they deserve ultimate banishment from my head for "open up".

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

If I wasn't on the verge of being swamped by holiday singing, Chris, I'd do it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

how about after holiday singing? Dan, where is this holiday singing going down and when, I would love to take my wife to something like this.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Holiday singing is happening at Symphony Hall in December. (There's also a free tree-lighting ceremony at Filene's in Downtown Crossing, but I'm not singing in that.) You can still get tickets for some of the Holiday Pops concerts; I'm singing on the evenings of the 13th, 16th, 17th and 19th. (13th is sold out.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Connor? Is that that neighbours dude? He's Northern Irish, I'm from Dublin, there's a DIFFERENCE.

I'd have Afrika Shox or whatever it's called by Leftfield, off Rhythm and Stealth. I'd also like to say that whoever said that that first or second track off Leftism sounds like the Macarena, fuck you, you've ruined it for me forever!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn it, she works nights so I can't make any of those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(You could also try the afternoon shows on the 13th and 19th, although I dropped out of one of them and can't remember which one.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan, in the words of the shagster "it wasn't me" , check the 'tv stars who should just fuck' thread on ile.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Try to remember which one Dan, would like to see you in action. ummm, that doesn't sound right. And I'll await a comment from Ned.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

'space shanty' is my fave Leftfield track now - tribal trance with heavy dub elements - sounds a lot better than that reads...i admit its all a little dated now tho, tho half the appeal is that its SO 1995 :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello?! Ce Ce Peniston - "Finally" (even though it's still so damn annoying due to how inescapable the melody is once it gets in your heaf)

V or maybe Vee, Sunday, 1 December 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It what way is "Finally" better than Robin S "Show Me Love" or "Luv 4 Luv" then?

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmmm, i think 'Finally' IS better actually - 'Luv 4 Luv' especially is just a poor imitation of 'Show Me Love'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

fuckin great thread

<3<3<3

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

five years pass...

Although the Billboard chart is tame, I found enough gems among the mag's list of the decade's #1 dance tracks per year.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 02:28 (seven years ago)
