Not yet - but if it's anything like Rebel Extravaganza I couldn't be less interested.

i actually liked rebel extravaganza (and i'm still at a loss as to why everyone labels it a horrible, industrial [?!] sellout) but the new one didn't impress me at all.

get rid of the twisting thorns-style riffs from "rebel extravaganza" and extend the simplistic, ministry-ish two chord riffs into overlong songs and you have "volcano."

The "industrial" criticism was mainly inspired the not-very-metal clinically sterile/digital production job rather than the songwriting itself, I guess. But the vocals are tedious, and the riffs are so extremely boring...

From what I hear from people, the general hatred towards Satyr largely comes from his continuous trendhopping career - medieval themes are in, voila Dark Medieval Times and Fjelltronen, oh no, vikings are cool now, enter The Shadowthrone and the Storm project, hey now Dissection-style melodicism is en vogue: Nemesis Divina, wait, everybody in Norway is listening to Apoptygma Berzerk: let's hire APB for a EBM/industrial remix (never mind the fact that he's christian), everybody is saying "black metal is dead" and Dødheimsgard scores with avantgarde/industrial ideas: let's try that on Rebel Extravaganza. Along the lines it has produced a nice tune here and there, but Satyricon always left a bad taste in my mouth.

four years pass...
I think it's important to point out at this juncture just how awesome the song "Fuel for Hatred" is. I don't know why I think it's important, but I just do.

Really, the whole "Volcano" album is pretty rad.

novaheat, Friday, 11 May 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

i only ever owned nemesis divina.

that has moments of sheer creativity like the wondrous 'mother north', but was largely full of muddled, bizarre experiments.

I found Volcano for a dollar, and finally got around to listening to it yesterday, and thought it was pretty rad as well. I will say that Satyricon have a lot of great songs, but their albums tend to be inconsistent. Like, "Now, Diabolical" and "KING" kick serious ass on the new one, but the rest of it isn't nearly as memorable.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard "Now, Diabolical"... but reviews seem to be pretty negative overall. "Nemesis Divina", on the other hand, I find to be pretty amazing all around... and I think they took a step down on "Rebel Extravaganza", which i ended up exchanging for "Dark Medieval Times."

I liked Now, Diabolical. Pretty evil, with some catchy songs. I haven't heard nemesis. I have Dark Medieval Times, Rebel Extravaganza, Volcano, and Now, Diabolical, none of which I paid more than three dollars for.I like them all to varying degrees. Rebel Extravaganza goes on a bit too long, I think, but there are some good tunes. Dark Medieval Times is probably my favorite. I like the folk elements.

They did a session a while back with a hornsection and shit.

two years pass...

Pretty obsessed with the old Satyricon albums at the moment: picked up "Dark Medieval Times" partly because Satyricon came last in the Norwegian BM Poll, and have been playing it a lot. Just acquired "Shadowthrone" and it sounds equally nuts.

Still trying to find out how he got that guitar sound on DMT. Sounds like a ton of fuzz, then reverb & a highpass filter but I could never come close.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

It's a completely insane sound. The music keeps on taking bizarre tangents. It feels like a soundtrack.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

You might like the Storm and Wongraven albums (Satyr side-projects). The first is like DMT if the metal parts were the interludes and the folk bits were the songs and the second is sweeping folk-ambient stuff.

Thanks, will check 'em out.
