this is it. the genre i've been waiting for. spectral and melancholic like vaporwave but not creepy.

the Ross From Friends album was spectacular. Kind of what I wanted an Aphex album to sound like in 2018

That Madteo album is, like, actually lo-fi. Sounds like it was made on an old MPC rather than using down-sampling plugins in Ableton or Logic (no shade there, I love those plugins).

Khotin album from earlier this year (Beautiful You) was pretty good if you want that smudged-out dream vibe

Isnt Ross From Friends Andy Weatherall's son?

The World According To.... (Michael B), Thursday, 12 December 2019 17:10 (five years ago)

yeah a lot of this stuff isn't actually lo fi it's just lo fi as an aesthetic. like marquis hawks aiming at floor friendly for years with the sumptuous elements of tape harmonics included.

another artist still doing lo-fi for real (and still great) is delroy edwards afaict

we already have a lofi house thread btw

can not believe you aren’t excited about a whole generation of house DJs with names like DJ Eddie the Dog from Frasier - the lo fi house thread

this track is awesome.

treeship., Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:58 (four years ago)

two years old, but you know -- i'm old now. it's interesting to compare this to the zombie study beats i've been listening to while grading (the chilled cow playlist discussed on the other thread). similar emphasis on vibes, but just enough individuality, dissonance, and evocative sampling to pierce the veil and evoke a real emotional reaction.

treeship., Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:01 (four years ago)

Sounds good/hadn't caught it as a new release--if only RFF had extended this Cage edit another 14 secs for full non-silent lolz, tho

Kangol In The Light (Craig D.), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:04 (four years ago)

(and yeah, I think those same characteristics made the Shlohmo tracks in that Lo-Fi Although Not Actually Lo-Fi Hip-Hop thread stand out to my ears compared with what tends to show up in that present-day Chilled Cow anime girl w/ cat stream

Kangol In The Light (Craig D.), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:07 (four years ago)

I kinda think lofi study beats are more analogous to like, European guys doing tasteful stripped down Detroit style house stuff with Rhodes loops, or even like Analogue Attic’s take on uhhh “ambient house”. More analogous than lofi house I mean. Idk.
