Brain Damage

Duke, Saturday, 14 December 2019 13:42 (five years ago)

No problem with the Pink Floyd thing but nothing is better than "A Day in the Life".

This reminds me that I need to create a Pavement vs soundgarden poll cause they tied in that recent guitar poll

brain damage/eclipse is cool, but a day in the life is sublime.

i would love to sample whatever drugs the backing vocalists were using when recording eclipse.

I hate the entire first part of A Day in the Life (everything up until "Woke up, got out of bed...")

ts: the musical skills and list-song writing style of george roger waters vs. some of the best work of john lennon and paul mccartney

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Saturday, 14 December 2019 22:00 (five years ago)

i would bet that if mccartney's contribution had been shelved and reworked later as a wings song people wouldn't feel so strongly about it. something that elevates both songs is that the sum is greater than the parts, fractal climaxes of albums of directly and indirectly conceptually-interrelated jams

I don’t like the chorus of brain damage
I don’t like eclipse
I love a day in the life

Floyd rules

this is tough; i do, in fact, love to turn you on, but also my head has exploded with dark forebodings

mookieproof, Sunday, 15 December 2019 04:43 (five years ago)

Floyd, every time.

has fgti weighed in yet?

Lidsville U.K. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 15 December 2019 12:43 (five years ago)

lol Sund4r, is that a cliché about Montreal? I was not aware. If anything, it strikes me as more of a Romanian (maybe even Eastern European?) thing: the Beatles were never that huge back home, whereas Floyd is still viewed as utterly unimpeachable, from beginning to end.

pomenitul, Sunday, 15 December 2019 12:56 (five years ago)

Ime yes; maybe it's fading?

Nice! You won't hear any complaints from me.

had a friend visit quebec and they were still spinning prog rock on the radio - if quebec is getting over their decades-long love affair with prog it's a very slow process! but i think harmonium are still (justly) legends there...

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Sunday, 15 December 2019 14:05 (five years ago)

Indeed they are.

I love Pink Floyd but this poll is correct

umsworth (emsworth), Sunday, 1 March 2020 03:04 (five years ago)

last year when i ranked all of the pink floyd songs up to 1983 "eclipse" was #37 and "brain damage" was #21

those are pretty high ratings, really. i don't know how i'd rank "a day in the life" if i was ranking beatles songs but i suspect it'd be somewhere in the top ten.

relative rankings of pink floyd vs. the beatles is not something i feel like i'd ever want to do, though, so none of the preceding is even remotely meaningful.
