help! paris angels' "perfume"

after much raving about this song on the ilm, i tracked it down; the version i obtained is a pink-label 12" with neither a song listing nor anything etched in the runoff groove. one side is a long version of what i assume to be "perfume;" the other side has 2 songs, the second of which might be the original version of "perfume." is this the real poop?

i think so, others would have to verify. i think there were 2 12"s released very close together, one was kind of peach coloured, the other white. cant quite remember now

original 12 " came in a yellowy orange sleeve
with a nut on the cover. the title was originally
'all on you' with a remix b side called perfume.
a year later it was re-released as 'perfume' as a forerunner
to the sundew album, and it had a bottle
of perfume on the front with the top off.
it also had a newer version on.

i think i have a spare but a bit worn
cd copy of the rereleased single
it's still playable mind so
so if u want to mail me i can post it to you ...?

about a year back one of the paris angels posted on a thread -- it might have been S/D Paris Angels, check the archive.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

nice whooshing noise in it

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

probably the best song of the baggy era

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

And here's my compulsory weekly contribution to the campaign to laud "Perfume". It's the dancefloortastic, e-fuelled bastard younger brother of Bizarre Love Triangle and it remains the highest point of baggy's legacy.

one year passes...
Anyone got "perfume" on some sort of downloadable file (or know where i can get it) i am prepared to swap it for a rare copy of "waterloo" by a little known swedish combo by the name of abba!

Barryw, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it on soul seek, drop me a message (username holojames) and i'll add you to my buddylist, make sure you download 'shall we take a trip' by Northside too though. They come as a pair.

"...it's up to you baby!!"

listened to this for the first time in ages last night and WHAT a record.

piscesboy, Monday, 8 August 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Fuck yeah, this is a major classic.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Monday, 8 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

This is absolutely one of the top ten Manchester spawned classics of all time. New Order/Factory fans take note. And I just met a guy who has the goddamn CD single, which blows my mind cause I only ever had it on vinyl, and my copy has too many scratches to play as a DJ. I never knew it was released on CD. I think I had the 7" once, too.

i always loved the incredible contrast between how dreadful the performance is on the original (demo?) recording.. and how glorious the remix sounds..

electricsound, Sunday, 30 September 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

godlike song. coulda been contenders.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 30 September 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

i rate the restrained but lovely cover by velocette

electricsound, Sunday, 30 September 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

A COVER?!

pisces, Sunday, 30 September 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

it's on this single (the two originals are also ace but this is not a velocette thread)

I listened to the album the other day, it was mostly shit apart from this song unfortunately.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 30 September 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

i imagine that would be the case, yeh :)

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 30 September 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, confirmed. But 'Perfume' is really terrific and "Has stood test of time". Where are they now?

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 30 September 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Colonel Poo, you're not telling us anything we might not have guessed. ;)

I'm surprised there's a cover! Must check that out.

Bimble, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

i've had my 3x PA 12"s digitised. just bragging.

a couple of good tracks on the album though i think. sorta WORLD OF TWIST-ish.

would you believe i actually owned that velocette record once, years ago in the dark days of post-britpop. i'd forgotten about it. don't recall the paris angels cover either.

pisces, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel about Quality Street by World Of Twist too - a couple of OK songs and rest is shit.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

NOOOOOOO!!! Quality Street is fantastic from beginning to end. One of the greatest records ever!

Isn't it supposed to be reissued soon?

Dr.C, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

i hope so. not heard it in ages and would categorically resist slsking (as with so many albums of that time, i have it on one side of a C90) if there's a reissue on the way.

Where are they now?

prison?

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't like the reissued version of this or whatever this shortened version is called "Perfume". It really takes away all the fun of the longer original "All On You" version if all the best bits are crammed together like that so that there's no rise and fall and buildup to it.
