the VOIVOD poll

we do not seem to have done this yet. I've been making my way through their discography and it seems shockingly consistent despite the many personnel changes and different songwriting credits. I was just scanning the RIP piggy thread and everyone is talking about the band in the past tense, but they ended up sticking around to release some really great stuff. The Wake in particular is wonderful.

War and Pain
Killing Technology
Dimension Hatröss
Nothingface
Angel Rat
Voivod
The Wake

I've listened to all of these and Nothingface is definitely my favourite of them. I was surprised by how good The Wake was, though; I should spend more time with it.

Not too many long-running metal bands where the drummer is the only consistent member, I can't imagine.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 12:59 (five years ago)

mayhem

but yeah

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 14:29 (five years ago)

Nothingface vs Angel Rat for me, though I have a lot of love for Dimension Hatross and The Outer Limits (the latter for "Jack Luminous" alone)

Voting Nothingface, I think. Angel Rat has many highlights amidst some forgettable stuff

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 14:39 (five years ago)

just noticed the s/t is not on Spotify (in Canada at least) - annoying!

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 14:41 (five years ago)

Nothingface was my intro, but Outer Limits was the first I owned and I listened to it constantly (as I did with everything I bought in those days), so probably Outer Limits, actually.

Nothingface feels more like a culmination of what they were doing from the mid 80s onwards...Angel Rat feels more consciously streamlined

IMO Dimension or Angel Rat (the latter is imo the best introduction to the band if you have to pick one album; then work back chronologically)

I feel like a lot of attention faded a bit when Snake left, although perhaps that’s overstated? I’m not sure how many Voivod completists are out there.

At the end of metal poll last year we were kicking around the idea of doing a Voivod listening group. It kinda fizzled out but maybe after the poll is done this wouldn't be a terrible thread to resuscitate the idea

oooooh I'd be down

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 07:50 (five years ago)

I only just pieced together that Piggy's replacement was the guitarist from Martyr. No wonder these albums are so sick - Feeding the Abscess is a Canuck metal classic

He's also a jazz guitar prof!

Un sang impur (Sund4r), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 15:06 (five years ago)

Yeah I was watching him up close the last time I saw them in London, he's pretty amazing. Also carrying on the Voivod tradition of shit stage names with "Chewy".

it's after the end of the world (Matt #2), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 15:32 (five years ago)

I have a hard time picking a fav because mine change based on what I'm in the mood for. more aggressive thrash, I go for Killing Technology, hooks I go to Nothingface. though The Wake is one of the best late-career albums I've ever heard, and Chewy basically became Piggy reincarnated.

the way they use guitar is just one of my favorite things to listen to.

Rrröööaaarrr was always my favourite but yeah they never really fell off.

Loving it. More streamlined than the very ambitious The Wake, it really captures the band's live chemistry. Rocky and Chewy lead this thing, their playing is insane. What a roll this band is on.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 12 February 2022 06:57 (three years ago)

Advance tracks were great. Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

The sensual shock (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 February 2022 02:32 (three years ago)

I like it a lot but need to get a quality listen in.

The Wake took only two for me to realize how amazing it was.

Liking it on one full listen. The "Planet Eaters"/"Mind Clock"/"Sleeves Off" is really good. I like Mongrain's solo on "Planet Eaters"; wish there were a little more of this.

The sensual shock (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 February 2022 23:16 (three years ago)

this is absolutely fantastic

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 14 February 2022 12:53 (three years ago)

after two listens, i absolutely love it, idk if it will hit as hard as The Wake for me, but this is inspired af again. hard to believe they're only 50% original members at this point, by the sound of it.

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 February 2022 14:47 (three years ago)

this is so dope

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 14 February 2022 16:09 (three years ago)

watch out Earthlings, they'll eat you up

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 February 2022 00:54 (three years ago)

and yes this album is grand, so I put on Killing Technology afterward.

I go through spells when I don't listen to Voivod, but once I'm listening to them, they're all I want to listen to.

Nothingface gonna get a spin later. that was the first one I owned.

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 February 2022 00:55 (three years ago)

two weeks pass...

Most Voivod lyric on the new album:

“We all need to spend some time away...

...from Earth”
