Not sure what to think of the Beatrice Dillon record yet. It seems studiously disinterested in sound design (although it's so dry that it probably sounds amazing on a loud system). I like the rigor of only using one bpm and having some strict limits on sounds & approach, but this will probably work better as one quirky track popping up in a mix vs a full album listen.

it’s good! but a little academic. im old enough to remember when deconstructed meant lots of breaking glass sounds

id say the Dillon is ‘electronica’ rather than ... the titular genre. for me, the latter is a descendant of a constellation of uk styles (weightless grime being a huge precursor) and sort of forges an experimental ethos from within the club tradition rather than foisting external experimental traditions into club (that’s electronica for me). im sure that distinction isn’t as tidy as that but it’s something ive been ruminating on. the fisherian “pulp modernist” slant to this inchoate genre is what i like about it

That Neighbours record— I find the mix, at least on the first two tracks on the bandcamp, to be really heavy in the mids and high frequencies. It is interesting and fun, but I'm finding it slightly irritating in a way I don't find other stuff we're putting here. Does it get, uh, bassier?

Not really. My guess was that the subby kicks and claps were sampled and the drummer was just playing all the clattery inbetween stuff, but from this video it looks fully live:

Industrial techno, I guess? I enjoyed their debut, looking forward to the EP.

It's too weird to be industrial techno, I think. That's there, sure, but there's also the Sewn Leather/DJ Dog Dick noise punk/grind thing, the more refined digital hardcore of the late 90s and early 2000s, and some dare I say OPN-like vibes on the debut. The track above is definitely not the best representation, but I love it still

I think I posted the Rian Treanor album upthread, but it's wild, I need to go back to it. I like it more after learning it came out of working with some of the Nyege Nyege crew.

It was a grower for me, but I think that's because it begins in a somewhat lackluster way, and then only really gets going by the fourth track, which is my favorite on the record
