it's come talk to me just for the drums, but

God, did I look forward to this album in '92, then played it to death forcing myself into thinking it a masterpiece.

Gonna pick "Secret World" because it's beautifully paced and developed.

Can’t believe I didn’t see this tour when I had the chance (Glastonbury ‘93) I dread to think what pish I might’ve been watching on the other stages at the time.

I'm not sure the album's even any good aside from the obvious standouts -- does the remaster remove the murk from the mix? Too much of it plays like White Guy Goes to Therapy.

The tour (did every leg have the Lepage staging?) was cool. And no, remaster does not remove the murk, the murk is baked in.

I saw him 3 times on this tour (well the last time was a WOMAD/RealWorld festival show with a scaled down set). Was so great.

The latest vinyl remaster of the album sounds great but it's always going to be an overstuffed murky mix, maximal Lanois.

Answer for me is Digging in the Dirt though it could be anything else other than Steam and Kiss that Frog.

Voted Steam despite being Sledgehammer II (and having the most ludicrously bad video of all time), can't remove nostalgic feelings of loving it in 93

"Digging in the Dirt" is such a cool song.

I last saw him on that dual tour with Sting, where they shared a band and sometimes swapped off on each other's songs (and where Sting seemed to be having a blast just playing bass for long stretches). I found it hilarious that Sting chose to sing lead on "Kiss That Frog." Like, thanks for touring with me, Pete, we're going to play one of your stupidest songs:

I once played "Love to Be Loved" while driving home from seeing Autumn Sonata, it was poignant as hell.

It's pretty, and shockingly (afaict) one of the only Eno/Gabriel collaborations other than "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." Though there is the cool Gabriel song Eno did/deconstructed/reconstructed:

think i'm going with "only us"... love the metric shifts, can never quite get a grasp of where it's going. i enjoy it.

Voted "Come Talk to Me" for its groove & melody and which I can't separate from the concert footage of Paula Cole in slinky dress and combat boots pleading with a phone booth.

alfred is being way too hard on himself upthread. UP may be a less significant record than SO, but i reach for it a lot more often.

That's the stressful part of being a solo artist: you can't break up.

4. I ended up voting for “come talk to me” on the strength of those drums but also for the triumphant return of the “Biko” bagpipe patch. first 50 seconds of that track are about as strong as an album opener gets

Against all odds, afaict only the third direct intersection between Gabriel and Eno (the others being a couple of tracks on "Lamb" and a couple of tracks on Fripp's "Exposure").

I wonder if it's because Gabriel is very painstaking about pursuing every option in his recordings, and Eno is supposedly more spontaneous? I suspect Gabriel wouldn't like having a performance or track erased just to clear the air and reduce the options in the mix.

I wouldn't have voted for "Fourteen Black Paintings" but it's a good example of his technique of "wander about for a few minutes to provide context for an epiphanic climax".

“Steam” is to “Sledgehammer” as “Human Touch” is to “Brilliant Disguise”, but I still love all 4 songs. The video is great; Stephen R. Johnson was a real talent
