Songs That Make You Think, "Damn, I should Write A Song Like That"

I'm not talking about "crap so bad you think even a
talentless bugger like me could do better." I'm
talking about good songs that are so simple
and direct, yet good, that those of us musical
dilettantes are inspired to sit down at our
guitar/piano/kazoo and try to do something
similar.

Of course, it could be argued that any
"good song" can be inspirational, but if
I hear a great big band jazz tune or
polyphonic prog tune, or even a modern
rock tune with tons of instruments and
effects, I may enjoy the song but it's
definitely way "out of my league." But it's
another thing altogether if I hear a
down-to-earth song, the sound of which
is theoretically within my grasp. Specific examples:
"Options," the first song off Pedro The Lion's
_Control_, or Tenacious D's "Jesus Ranch"
(as heard on the movie _Bongwater_).

P.S Jack Black's the man and all, but I'd for
him to sometime try his hand at a "straight"
song, or has that been done?

After I hear any Turbonegro, Gluecifer, MC5, or Stooges song, I usually think to myself, "Fuck, I was just about to write that. Bastards beat me to it."

Does that count?

i'm not sure if this necessarily counts, but i was amazed that ap carter wrote will the circle be unbroken. it seems like the kind of song that sprang from the earth fully formed and has been around as long as time itself.

Happiness is a Warm Gun - the Beatles. And most Beatles songs for that matter.

From Turbonegro's "I Got Erection": "I think of blood / I think of love / Erection". I think when this was pointed out to me it was the saddest day of my life, the thought that I didn't write that.

Marquee Moon. It's complicated, yet simple. I'm still amazed by it.

Blackalicious "Chemical Calisthenics" always makes me think 'god-dang if I could just write something like THIS".

Ally,
I completely know what you're saying. When I first heard the line "Motherfucking Pizza Tonight!", I could have sworn they actually stole that from me.

four months pass...
Pedro The Lion, "Options"

We were walking, holding hands
With our bare feet in the sand
And the seagulls overhead
When I broke the spell and said

"I could never divorce you
Without a good reason
And though I may never have to
It's good to have options"

But for now, I need you
But for now, I need you
But for now, I need you

...

So I told her I loved her
And she told me she loved me
And I mostly believed her
And she mostly believed me

So simple and beautiful.
Search _Control_, the best album of last year.
