Thought it was time for a new thread considering we are in a new decade and the other thread is quite long. We are also right at 100, which is unbelievable. I pretty much just kept the same name of the thread too. I also put in a few modifications and it does look a bit better.
BTW in the "Where to find the results thread" if you click on mookieproof links you will find each poll's full results list, where they exist and where he could find them.

had been thinking an Underworld poll would be good but i'm not sure at the moment when i'll have time to do a poll this year
i guess you can put me down for it but if someone else happens to have time before me and wants to run an Underworld poll they're welcome to run it instead
would also love to see that SFA poll happen at some point now that Guerilla is finally on NA spotify?
― ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 01:40 (four years ago) link
I'd run an Underworld poll, we'd do well to make it happen before the next Drift series starts up and produces another 12 hours of tracks and jams to wrestle with

― Johnny Fever, Friday, 7 February 2020 02:38 (four years ago) link
glad to see this thread! thanks, Bee OK.
i'm gonna take my name off of the Billy Joel poll. i ran the track-by-track listening thread with the vague idea that we COULD roll from that into a poll or something, but in practice that thread had such a great turnout and discussion that i'm not sure we'd really gain much by doing a poll, even if everyone could muster it. the joy of ballot polls is in the discussion more than the ranking, and we had one hell of a discussion there. if someone else wants to run it i'd totally vote, though!
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 7 February 2020 02:40 (four years ago) link
Is there a thread like this for all the various movie polls? I know the detritus thread each year has links to all the other ones, but I meant the genre and decade polls.
― clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 03:24 (four years ago) link
I realize the movie polls don't follow back-to-back like the artist ones do, but it would be nice if there were some place where we could float ideas about movie polls and gauge interest (and let folks know they're going on). There's one I've been thinking about for a while, and it will be some time before I can even entertain the idea, but I wouldn't currently know how I would even go about seeing if people would be into it.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 03:32 (four years ago) link
Great idea--start a thread. Anyone with an idea can test it out there--hopefully limited to whether there's interest or not, saving the this-belongs-no-it-doesn't arguments for the actual poll. I think a cumulative results thread would be useful too; some of those movie threads, like the comedy and horror, are really hard to load when you want to check something.

"New Rose" shuffled up on my phone today and after I was through shouting along I thought a punk rock tracks poll would be fun. Limit it to the period 1974 (Ramones formation) to 1984 (Zen Arcade/Let It Be/Double Nickels).

We definitely need an Underworld poll
― groovypanda, Friday, 7 February 2020 07:57 (four years ago) link
one thing with the underworld poll though would be figuring out where to draw the line with remixes etc., like "dark train" should probably be counted as a separate track to "dark & long" but does that work for all of them, and how do you handle something like "rez/cowgirl"?
― ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 08:05 (four years ago) link
if it were me, I'd exclude outside remixes, and combine votes for different versions / recordings / mixes / arrangements, but note votes for specific versions in the results. and probably make an eligibility chart so folks don't split votes from themselves.
Rez and Cowgirl I'd be inclined to list separately since they were such distinct recordings, made over a year apart, but roll together in results if voters demand.
― Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 08:33 (four years ago) link
i mean the "rez/cowgirl" mashup that's been a live staple and was on everything, everything. obviously you list "rez" and "cowgirl" separately but then do you allow votes for "rez/cowgirl" as a separate entity or not or combine the votes in some way?
i agree about excluding outside remixes and combining votes for the cases that are more directly alternate versions/recordings/mixes/arrangements of the same track, the edge case is the remixes they did themselves that are basically entirely separate works to the original (most prominently "dark train" but i think there's a few others out there too)
― ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 09:08 (four years ago) link
yeah there are five or so fully different Dark & Long "versions" that are sometimes listed as discrete songs / sometimes versions, and most of the dubno singles, plus Pearl's Girl and Born Slippy, have the same casual approach to taxonomy. The Born Slippys are as different as Dark Train from Dark & Long, while the Dirty x-s generally sound like separate recordings of the same song, and so do some of the other Darks. And some of the versions even have different mixes!
The band labelled them all as Song (Version) on the super-deluxe reissues, which is probably a tip worth taking.
C21st Underworld instead seemed to do all the rethinking and reworking off-record, playing some things live for years but waiting until they decided on a definitive version to release one (eg You Do Scribble). Drift finally went back to that early-'90s direction, what with the Necks and no-Necks Appleshines, remixing and re-arranging and re-editing things between single and EP and album, the different Soniamodes and Brilliants...
seeing how the voters prefer to think of Rez and Cowgirl is part of the fun!
― Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 09:56 (four years ago) link
i think one of the other dark & long "remixes" is actually a remix of one of the other dubnobass tracks even

my lineball instinct was to separate them like Rez and Cowgirl, but they really are exactly the same piece in different arrangements (and also reminiscent of when they'd do a Soft Mix and a Hard Mix on work-for-hire remix gigs around this time). I guess the only conclusion is not to do an Underworld poll

I'm thinking of offering my services to do the graphics for the eventual R.E.M. poll (it's 14th on the upcoming poll list)--that is, if rogermexico doesn't want to do them himself.
But here's the gimmick. I would ask all ILM'ers to send me random pictures in an R.E.M. aesthetic (whatever that is). Inscrutable objects, blurry photos you haven't deleted yet, chalk marks on a truck tire, a link to a drawing of some adzes, an old shopping list with a penguin scrawled on it. Or take a picture to illustrate a specific song--but don't tell me the song. I'll slap these bits together haphazardly, paste a wonky font on top and reap the acclaim.
If I do it, I'll probably have to start working on it now to get it done for the reveal sometime next year.

hmmm not sure why it just made a new post but here's my thought - all those 'remixes' should be treated as a distinct track, since they're basically distinct tracks with almost nothing to do with the originals. if you combine votes then you wouldn't be able to put, say, "Dark Train" along with "Thing in a Book", nor "Tin There" with "Pearl's Girl", even though these tracks are very different from each other. as for "Rez/Cowgirl", idk how you'd want to handle it but I'd lean towards just not allowing it

Would anyone be interested in trying to do a digital "draft"? Have heard a number of these done on podcasts in recent years and thought it could be fun to try here. Here's how I think it could work (and I'm open to suggestions):
- Draft-runner would pick a topic and create a thread -- year(s), genre, artist, scene- First ~10-12 people to express interest would be included as participants but everyone could post if they want (could go larger but it could take too long to be fun...see below)- Draft-runner would select ~5 categories -- Best Album, Best Song, Best Artist, Best Music Video, Best Industrial Metal EP (you can get as specific as you want, you get the idea)- Draft participants would be assigned an order and would be "on the clock" to make a selection from the category of their choice by posting in the thread (suggest that each participant has 24 hours from the last participant's post to make their selection, otherwise this could in theory take months)- Once all participants have made a selection from every category, the draft is over and we would then run a POLL to let ILM decide who had the best draft
We could also in theory run the actual draft over email, in a google doc, etc. if people think it would be more fun to keep the results a surprise until the poll/anonymize things.

Search isn't finding it, but surely there has been a Grateful Dead artist poll?
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Saturday, 26 October 2024 00:58 (one month ago) link
You are correct, Grateful Dead has not been done. No one has/had even signed up for it.
I will update this thing soon.

Do a Grateful Dead poll, that'd be great.

iirc there are like three studio albums anyone cares about and i'm not sure we have the heads to adequately rank all the shows

Song poll...Guessing you'd get at least 20 people.

it’ll be cool to tackle the song book, idk how we’d handle the hundreds of live versions but we could figure something out.

Yeah, song poll with criteria up to the individual (i.e. live versions factored in).

hey I care about at least eight studio albums! xxxxp
would vote in this, yeah just do songs not studio + live versions

Not that anyone asked, but my advice would be to combine all votes for one song. I realize the Grateful Dead are a special case when it comes to live versions, but as HD's comment indicates, you may get such splintered results that with 20-30 voters, it'll be hard for any one version to accumulate votes. Maybe you could make an exception for well-known official-release live albums like Live/Dead and Europe '72 (or maybe that would take care of itself).

Yeah, I think the results could just shout out any specific live versions that received votes.
Hey, Relisten is back up after the Internet Archive hack!

xp I did that with the Bacharach Songbook -- total points for the song, but I broke each entry down by version, e.g. Walk on By 1181 points (821 Dionne, 260 Isaac Hayes, 100 Aretha)

Could have a ballot for best bootlegs. Good luck sorting through the many thousands of them

I've never run a poll before and this seems like a particularly tough one to run.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Sunday, 27 October 2024 02:57 (one month ago) link
idk I would just vote for songs, weighted towards the ones that have the most smokin' live versions (or the most definitive studio takes)
― sleeve, Sunday, 27 October 2024 03:25 (one month ago) link
OK also I suggest for the sub-polls taking top tens of studio LPs (this is tough, I sure do love Terrapin Station), best live recording released before Garcia's death (it's Skull & Roses), and best live recording officially released afterwards (Sunshine Daydream duh).

I'm thinking about it, but I have few functional math, spreadsheet, or graphics skills. I have a hard time posting images sometimes.
