Quality sounds pretty hot so far.

I think Kweli may not hate fun anymore!

does he still sound like a three-way mashup of the sweathogs?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

seriously though, it would take a helluva lot to get me to like talib kewli's voice. i always had to resist the urge to fastforward through his verses on the blackstar record.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

they both stink rocks

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i just saw a bit of a video. sounded like he co-opted some folks flows and was gettin' jiggy with it. i was very distracted by being forced to keep looking at a young gentleman whom had taken a hacksaw to his beard.

ron (ron), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i always liked him way more than Mos. for a while i was really in love with his flow, although these days i listen back and it doesn't impress me as much, but there are some tracks where he really shines...the Reflection Eternal had some great moments. i'm definitely picking up the new one but i'm not nearly as hyped as i woulda been a year ago...so i'm on the fence about whether i still like him and this will be the tie breaker.

the single is starting to grow on me but i fucking hate hate hate Bilal and it's really hard to get past him all over. but there's some cool little shifts in the track where the beat under the verse sounds completely different from during the chorus and i can't really explain it, but it clashes in a strangely pleasing way.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The single is weak, Bilal is lame and the chorus sounds completely unrelated to the verses and tacked on. But yeah, I do like that bit where you think they're going go back to the hook yet again but instead there's the little mono interlude with the compressed drums.

Anyway, despite being in love with Black Star and Reflection Eternal for awile I actually had pretty low expectations for this album, so it's nice to find a lot of good material. The Kanye West tracks are all hot. Get By, Shock Body and Guerilla Monsoon Rap make it worth it for me so far.

Also Doug Wimbish from Living Colour is apparently part of his crew now! (makes sense since he's in Mos's band guess, but it's still kind of funny).

I like his voice, but the Kweli and Hi-Tek stuff always sounded dull to these ears.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i like him better than mos now. every 4 months or so i have an urge to hear his voice and i fire up one of the 2 talib mp3s on my hard drive. they're alright, y'know. that is all i have to say about talib kweli.

There's one really cool Kweli track on the "Off the Chain" Rawkus sampler from a few years back, forget the title, but it contains the line "Officially/people love our company like we was misery", which is one of my favourite rap lines of all time. He was very much the Ashley to Mos Def's Mary Kate, to be honest.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i'm very excited about the combination of Kanye and Kweli, that's my big reason for buying the album.

i think it's kind of unfortunate that he's gotten caricatured as this Rawkus poster boy who "hates fun", is really full of his own PCness, but c'mon, the guy loves Jay and Cube, and he seems like a pretty chill dude.

also, "Name Of The Game" is pretty badass.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

the guy loves Jay and Cube

Suddenly makes me wonder -- there's almost a convention in what relatively little I've read of articles/commentary on any number of undie/more PC/etc./whatever rappers where it's made clear about how they love a lot of the high profile folks, which makes sense. But is the love ever shared back to them?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't see how Kanye and Kweli will sound much different than Hi Tek and Kweli.. I think Kanye West sounds just like Hi Tek, only with funkier samples. I suppose that's good though, while Hi Teks production impresses me technically it's always seemed really bland. I haven't heard any more than a 5 second snippet of one song off the new Kweli, so I'm still suspending any judgement until I hear it all.. I was all over Reflection Eternal at the time, but if it's the same record again I don't think I'll be so happy about it.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure Jay-Z has said that he's a big Kweli fan.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

whos heard the new eardrum album?

its not bad...

the liberation album is better though. i dont think ill ever like a kweli album anymore just cos everything he makes now is like okayplayer rap.

...as opposed to when?

I'm hard on him, but I was a big fan and I really should check out some of his newer material.

thirteen years pass...

talib has gotten himself into the weirdest shit over the years.

i guess my question is: what's to stop him from using another account?

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 4 August 2020 23:59 (five years ago)
