**bonus** tracks: good idea / bad idea

We've all encountered it, sometimes we've even bought things we already owned for it: 'bonus' material. 'never before seen footage' 'never before released recordings' etc.

the question i have, when was it worth it and when wasn't it? what instances has it detracted from the original material, and when was it crazy to have left it out in the first place?

this is a spin off from the safe as milk discussion, the album in my mind that stands out the most that i've considered buying the older version just so i don't have to deal with the bonus tracks that don't fit in with the original end of the album.

i've always especially loved albums that feel like they fit together as tight as a puzzle, each element placed just so, and i guess when i find that something which seemed so right was tampered with in the name of 'more is more' it gets under my skin. other people seem to not find this as bothersome. what do you think?

It annoys me that 'Meat is Murder' now has 'How soon is now' on it.

Not sure if that's because it fitted together as tight as a puzzle or becuase I'm really anal.

But I was pleased when they released Bowie's 'Young Americans' with the tracks that were originally dropped after he met up with Lennon and recorded Fame and Across the Universe (dire version of a dire song) - 'Who can I be now' and 'It's gonna be me'.

Unfortunately the latest reissue just has the originally released tracks again.

It annoys me slightly when an album has a closing track that seems to round things off very nicely and then you get two or three live versions and/or glorified B-Sides stuck on the end. The new QOTSA album is a case in point. Ditto when FFRR plonked The Saint ignominiously on the end of InSides.

I think the US issue always did.

For me, biggest example of "not worth it" that comes to mind is the CD issue of Anthony Phillips' "The Geese and the Ghost". Supposed to close with the poignant "Sleepfall: The Geese Fly West"--instead the CD tacks on the tepid demo "Master of Time", that totally ruins the intended mood.
