calstars, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:09 (five years ago)

Fuck the music imo

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:11 (five years ago)

I've found myself not pausing music because it seems like. Rude. Not in the character of music to be paused. I leave it playing when I walk away to the bathroom.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:13 (five years ago)

Gotta show the music who's boss.

jmm, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:14 (five years ago)

Xpost Think u may be taking a certain Rihanna song a bit too literally

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:26 (five years ago)

Pausing for a minute and then restarting is not so bad, but I feel disrespectful to the music if I have to completely stop a song before it finishes.

emil.y, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:28 (five years ago)

I don’t know how any Rhianna songs go

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:29 (five years ago)

I feel like it's disrespectful to the late GG Allin's persona to not abort his albums partway thru

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:29 (five years ago)

this is tempting fate imo

idk good post

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:33 (five years ago)

Haha. Yes! I assumed I was alone with my weird reluctance to pause mid-track. Even on, say, 37 minute orchestral movements.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:35 (five years ago)

I have known people who, if they were stopping, pausing, or changing music, would meticulously fade out what was playing first so as not to create a jarring experience. While I can appreciate this mindset on some level, I think it is way too precious for daily life. I saw pause away, the music won't mind.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:38 (five years ago)

let the music pause
he might be santa claus
this groove he will ignore
and bring you coal forever more
(let it pause)

mookieproof, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:47 (five years ago)

the CD player at the record store I worked at had a a sweet “fade out” option that would fade semi-quickly before stopping. I wish that feature was more common.

brimstead, Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:51 (five years ago)

I’ll feel weird if I stop at a certain point in an album, and don’t come back & play the rest of it (even if I come back to it a long time later, I’ll try to stop where I “left off”).

Ticket Tout (morrisp), Saturday, 22 February 2020 22:58 (five years ago)

it would be cool if the pause function didn't actually stop the music but just held that particular note / chord / sound until you released it and let it go on its merry way again

ymo sumac (NickB), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

That’d be great let’s get top men on it

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

i mean, pausing a dvd doesn't turn the picture off, why should pausing a record turn the sound off?

ymo sumac (NickB), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:11 (five years ago)

Sustaining a tone is (obviously) not equivalent to freezing an image

Ticket Tout (morrisp), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:14 (five years ago)

Why are you trying to poke holes in this (obviously) great idea

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:15 (five years ago)

Foobar2000 does that on my computer if I open the CD drawer while a disc is playing. I don't think this is intended as a feature.

Noel Emits, Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:16 (five years ago)

it is too. like you should be able to take sound photos that capture the exact totally of the noise around you at the moment you press the button xxp

ymo sumac (NickB), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:17 (five years ago)

Well to go down this route, an image can be momentary but audio works in time so there needs to be some duration involved. You could take maybe a tenth of a second and smear it so it's like a wash.

Noel Emits, Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:26 (five years ago)

Images are still captured over a measurable length of time, albeit usually, perhaps, one that’s too short for meaningful sound perception?

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:33 (five years ago)

Clearly this must be solved. I feel like it might be the sudden silence that's most regrettable (sometimes almost painful) more than the interruption per se.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 22 February 2020 23:44 (five years ago)

great I'm .002% more neurotic now

lukas, Sunday, 23 February 2020 00:25 (five years ago)

XXP

I suppose colour requires duration (albeit very high frequency) but you also have whole spatial dimensions.

Whereas all audio is is changes in energy over time.

Noel Emits, Sunday, 23 February 2020 01:07 (five years ago)

you know what's the most rude to the music is shuffle, i'm listening to some jean francaix adagio and then boom right into some fuckin' dogntank, that shit ain't respectful or polite

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 23 February 2020 02:01 (five years ago)

i always stop the music right before the guitar solo, so the little man inside the cd gets frustrated that once again, he doesn't get to shine.

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 February 2020 02:04 (five years ago)

I have known people who, if they were stopping, pausing, or changing music, would meticulously fade out what was playing first so as not to create a jarring experience.

Yeah, my brother does that. I always found it a little weird.

MarkoP, Sunday, 23 February 2020 02:07 (five years ago)

i do that when i'm switching to a new track - smooth .5 second fadeout, change track, back to normal volume just before it starts
i call it the uni-fade

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Sunday, 23 February 2020 02:33 (five years ago)

I have a lot to learn about mixing. I tired it for the first time and the first two songs met together nicely but the second and third sounded like a train wreck

calstars, Sunday, 23 February 2020 03:33 (five years ago)

I'm all about shuffle, I'll shuffle all over the place from one genre to something completely different. I simply have no respect for the music.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 23 February 2020 03:53 (five years ago)

I'm all about that play
Bout that play
No shuffle

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 February 2020 04:09 (five years ago)

It’s rude to the vibe, man

Taking a dump on the cd/vinyl halfway thru a GG Allin album then playing the rest is the correct way to get the most of the artist-specific aural ambience

Master of Treacle, Sunday, 23 February 2020 06:59 (five years ago)

The not so faint fecal waft really adds to all that creamy mid range warmth, something you’ll never know how you done without

Master of Treacle, Sunday, 23 February 2020 07:06 (five years ago)

hey the audiophile thread is over there, this is the panpsychic mp3 thread

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Sunday, 23 February 2020 07:10 (five years ago)

I know I am old because even though my source is 100% digital, I still stop my music player before turning it off, despite there being no difference whatsoever between "stop" and "off" in terms of what happens... this reflex is from the era of music sources having physical transports and reading mechanisms that could actually be damaged by suddenly cutting power to them.

avellano medio Inglés (f. hazel), Sunday, 23 February 2020 07:17 (five years ago)

I do most my “quality” listening in the car, and it’s pretty common that I’ll have to stop a track in the middle, when I reach my destination (I rarely there idling, waiting for the track to end).

The music is dutifully waiting for me later, like an eager puppy, no harm done!

Ticket Tout (morrisp), Sunday, 23 February 2020 07:36 (five years ago)

what's really rude is when music pauses me, from what I am doing

imago, Sunday, 23 February 2020 08:32 (five years ago)

when I reach my destination (I rarely there idling, waiting for the track to end).

Nor I, because I will have taken an extra lap around the block to let the end of the track play out!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 23 February 2020 13:35 (five years ago)

I will have taken an extra lap around the block to let the end of the track play out!

I do that all the time - though when walking not driving, not so much of a big deal when you slow down to make sure you get to the end of the track.

my cd burner used to leave one second gaps between tracks and by god I cannot believe I didn't smash it.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 23 February 2020 15:44 (five years ago)

you know what's the most rude to the music is shuffle, i'm listening to some jean francaix adagio and then boom right into some fuckin' dogntank, that shit ain't respectful or polite

things which prove I am old: I hate that every Android music player I've tried defaults to shuffle, keeps reverting to shuffle no matter how often I follow the (multiple, irritating) steps to play a whole album in order, and doesn't make it easy to tell whether shuffle is on or off in the first place

I find pausing music less disrespectful than wandering off and not listening to it while it continues to play, I guess - although sometimes when listening to a mix or an archived radio show it feels like the latter might be closer to the original spirit of listening

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:09 (five years ago)

Wandering away is the original fade out, completely devoid of the technological trickery we are so inundated with these days.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:21 (five years ago)

I got in trouble in college for wandering away from my music

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:26 (five years ago)

But that might have been due to it being Mortician and being played at maximum volume when I left the room

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:26 (five years ago)

VLC on Android has never started shuffling on me unbidden.

Noel Emits, Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:30 (five years ago)

I'm so rockist I nearly always listen to while albums all the way through.

Noel Emits, Sunday, 23 February 2020 17:31 (five years ago)

so do i. because albums are the ultimate musical statements, man

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Sunday, 23 February 2020 18:36 (five years ago)

same, and i’ve been late time out of mind because of music, or rather because i was listening to music instead of getting ready or allowed the next track to start before stopping it.

Fizzles, Sunday, 23 February 2020 19:30 (five years ago)

tho to answer the question i think pausing and restarting is the worst experience of all for me. i’d just prefer to stop it and not return. there is an accumulation of sorts through the track, apart from those tracks where you have a favourite bit and you’re really only listening out for that.

Fizzles, Sunday, 23 February 2020 19:31 (five years ago)

I only listen to the best 30 seconds of any track. I have a little paper index I've written in each CD case I own of which 30 seconds of any individual track are the most important 30 seconds to listen to. Listening to the whole track is a waste of time, you get the idea within half a minute if you pick the right spot. No disrespect to the music intended

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Sunday, 23 February 2020 19:46 (five years ago)

I actually do have Post-Its on many of my Girl Group comp CDs, indicating which are the key tracks (tho I know that’s not the joke you’re making).

What's rude is walking off in the middle of the music and withdrawing your attention from it.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:00 (five years ago)

In college I briefly convinced myself it was unnatural and unfair to the artist to not finish an album once I started it. Listen to enough back halves of albums from the Dirty Projectors/Fiery Furnaces/twee artists Pitchfork pushed in the early to mid 00s and one will naturally dispose of such inanity.

Indexed, Monday, 24 February 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

I feel like it's more rude to myself than to the music (assuming I'm enjoying the music)

silverfish, Monday, 24 February 2020 21:00 (five years ago)

stranded on the horns of a dilemma when I pull up in the car and a good track is playing and I can’t turn off the engine without turning off the music so do I burn carbon or disrespect the artist?
I go through some version of this every day.

when I lived in uni halls of residence, I accidentally left a copy of Atari Teenage Riot in my CD player and went away for the weekend. My CD player was also my alarm clock and I'd left it cranked to top volume. I made friends

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 24 February 2020 22:23 (five years ago)

Idk I have music playing all the time, I really can’t be bothered unless I’m doing some hyper focused listening I guess, in which case I’d be more inclined to just start the track over if I had to interrupt the listening session

brimstead, Monday, 24 February 2020 22:33 (five years ago)

I guess that’s more rude to the music. Making it start telling the story all over from the beginning.

I played Brutal Truth's "Prey" for about 10 of the 23 minutes before I had to stop it.

eleven months pass...

it's completely rude and I apologize to the music.

honestly though I hate restarting albums after long pauses. it feels hard to get back into it if I peaced out for 20 minutes to shower and want to come back to Exile on Main STreet, the music feels like it's judging me.
