from Wikipedia"
AllMusic critic Ned Raggett retrospectively wrote that So Tonight That I Might See "remains the group's undisputed high point, mixing in plenty of variety among its tracks without losing sight of what made the group so special to begin with"

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 February 2020 00:52 (five years ago)

i just saw the Opal thread is getting some hits and don't want to derail that at all but we haven't polled an album by David Roback yet. his music is so beautiful.

RIP

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 February 2020 00:54 (five years ago)

So, so hard. "Into Dust" floored me the first time I listened to this, and still does, but in the end the cover has meant more to me overall. 27 years later Roback's arrangement is still what I automatically play when I pick up any acoustic (and then usually "Rhymes of an Hour").

this is a very tough decision! RIP David Roback

"Blue Light" is devastating

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 February 2020 02:26 (five years ago)

I’ve wondered if it was a drug reference - specifically the practice of using blue light in public restrooms to make injecting difficult. Apologies if “duh”.

I love every song on this album and Five String Serenade is just such a perfect cover song for this band. But it’s gotta be Fade Into You.

love the tambourine on this album. Gonna vote She’s My Baby in honor of Roback and his amazing guitar sounds.

Into Dust

umsworth (emsworth), Thursday, 27 February 2020 08:18 (five years ago)

"fade into you"

"into dust" close behind

Into Dust

paolo, Thursday, 27 February 2020 23:25 (five years ago)

feeling the title track right now

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Friday, 28 February 2020 01:48 (five years ago)

It’s remarkable how frequently Into Dust has been used in TV shows, movies, etc. Love the sound but not sure I would have picked it to get so much traction in media.

that's not my post, Friday, 28 February 2020 02:30 (five years ago)

fade into you probably provided for 90% of Robacks income since it came out so I'm voting that

akm, Friday, 28 February 2020 03:36 (five years ago)

:'-( Such a great band.

The three best-known tracks on this are wonderful, but I hope the less obvious choices get votes too. Not sure what mine will be, it's much too hard.

I'd forgotten how "Unreflected" went - it's their high-octane floorfiller

bells ring

gaudio, Friday, 28 February 2020 13:55 (five years ago)

I prefer Among My Swan to this album. I'm also not a huge fan of Into Dust. Maybe Bells Ring. Or Fade.. of coourse

Duke, Friday, 28 February 2020 15:11 (five years ago)

i'm trying not to vote for "Fade Into You" as i feel it will get enough love. so i'm trying to pick the second best song on this and it's still so tough to do.

Bee OK, Friday, 28 February 2020 21:47 (five years ago)

Fuck it, I'm not gonna play hipster this time. 'Fade Into You' it is.

Wasted

sleeve, Friday, 28 February 2020 21:52 (five years ago)

voted Bells Ring, but this album is one i always want to listen to all the way through.

tylerw, Friday, 28 February 2020 22:09 (five years ago)

How had this never been polled before?

I fell asleep to this album nearly every night for 2 years when I was in High School. Obvs Fade is amazing but I love almost every song on this and 5 String Serenade is a strong favorite.

RIP David Roback. You are already missed.

the future is now, Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:17 (five years ago)

I'm kidding I've actually flown across the country twice to see them live

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:24 (five years ago)

Into Dust gonna win: Boring choice, but a good song:)

Blue Light.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 2 March 2020 00:01 (five years ago)

You could slide "Bells Ring" onto a side of one of the Galaxies 500 LPs and not really notice, in the best possible way.

daily growing, Monday, 2 March 2020 00:04 (five years ago)

I didn't forget you Mary of Silence

i was very surprised that this one was not poll before too, i had to correct that problem with recent events.

Bee OK, Monday, 2 March 2020 04:30 (five years ago)

they really do seem to be... not slept on, but like everyone loves 'em but doesn't talk about much it. probably doesn't help that they vanished at the dawn of the message board era and didn't pop up again with new material until 2013

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Monday, 2 March 2020 04:45 (five years ago)

Controversial rockers

"Mazzy Star anger Sydney concert-goers by performing set in the dark" - DailyMail.co.uk

Were all of Roback's interviews this great?

when responding to questions he tends toward variations on the answer, "I don't know."

And when you put them together :D

Fade Into You became a breakout hit in 1994, driving sales of their second album So Tonight That I May See to platinum status ... Do they have any idea why that song was so special? They do not. "I think it's a good song," says Sandoval. "I think a lot of our songs are good."

sbahnhof, Monday, 2 March 2020 07:19 (five years ago)

Hmmm, tough one, I think objectively Fade into You is the one but the all or nothing nature of these polls would make it look like there's only one good track on this.
Debating between Into Dust, Sweet Mary, Blue Light and Unreflected.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 2 March 2020 11:09 (five years ago)

yeah I think I mentioned it on another Mazzy Star thread, but after I saw them play in LA last year we went to a bar near the venue and there were tons of people complaining that they couldn't see the band or take pictures/video of the show. They got no sense of the dramatic!

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Monday, 2 March 2020 15:16 (five years ago)

Apparently it was all because of Hope's huge sense of shyness. Last year I found a vid of them playing in broad daylight, which is pretty miraculous in hindsight

Absent from Instagram and Twitter

Can't believe a 90s band would be etc etc

sbahnhof, Monday, 2 March 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

i was really nice to listen to this again. i can also attest to Hope's shyness. i was at a Jesus and Mary Chain show and she was there. i went up to her and said something and i scared her to death just by talking with her, she immediately went back stage and i felt horrible. this happened at the Roxy on Sunset back in the day.

Bee OK, Monday, 2 March 2020 22:01 (five years ago)

forgot, ended up voting for "Blue Light" after all.

Bee OK, Monday, 2 March 2020 22:02 (five years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 00:01 (five years ago)

haha, there was no doubt.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 00:41 (five years ago)

RIYL "Fade Into You", their last '90s album Among My Swan – it's a daft title but a really nice collection of songs. Having had a hit, it had a slight influence on their songwriting, I think, and there's a little change of direction towards... folk?/pop? (They were right not to want to analyze stuff too much.)

sbahnhof, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 01:24 (five years ago)

Among My Swan has as many classics as So Tonight, I think... Flowers in December, All Your Sisters, I've Been Let Down, Look on Down from the Bridge

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 11:10 (two years ago)

I fell asleep to this album almost every night my senior year in HS. Also, I never knew that 5 string serenade was a cover! I'd prob have voted Fade but I love 5 String so much.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 11:10 (two years ago)

Mazzy's 5 string is probably definitive — great tune, though, kind of crazy that it is such a late-period Arthur Lee tune. Sounds like it could've been on Forever Changes.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:40 (two years ago)

this album had a weird trajectory ... I remember my older brother getting it around the time it came out, but it seemed like it took almost a year for "fade into you" to really take hold.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:42 (two years ago)

Yeah I was smitten with She Hangs Brightly after encountering "Ride It On" on a Melody Maker comp, having managed to find that record all the way down in Tasmania I had to special order So Tonight on release, and wait for weeks - it was my "special thing" ... and then one day "Fade Into You" was fucking everywhere.
