― Murdered-Out Highlander XLE (morrisp), Friday, 28 February 2020 05:28 (five years ago)
i feel like the song is...fine, but the video is some sort of rupaul's drag race "grimes' 'genesis'" challenge mess

It was also, we have been assured, shot entirely on an iPhone 11 Pro.

I do like the song, though; probably the best thing I've heard from her since "Edge of Glory"
I liked it too. I don't know if it's a good song or a bad song, and it sounds like Gaga imitating herself, but it still made me happy.
― Lily Dale, Friday, 28 February 2020 16:57 (five years ago)
Listened to it on Spotify looping for the last little while. It is much better without the video.

i remember hearing the song when it had leaked and it was fine i guess but nothing i felt compelled to return to
video looks horrible, not inclined to watch it in full at all. i imagine it feeling like a throwback to, like, "g.u.y." which was approximately when i began to worry to what extent she'd run out of ideas

OK, I agree that listening now with headphones -- and not watching the video! -- the song sounds a lot better (and less "pastiche-y") than it did at first.
Btw - on the elevator at work this morning, the guy standing next to me was prominently browsing shop.ladygaga.com on his big-azz iPhone (probably an 11 Pro, lol).
― tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Monday, 2 March 2020 21:52 (five years ago)
This song is okay!
And yeah, my default with a new songs out on YouTube over the last year or three is to listen without any video/visual, because if a video/visual is terrible it has some effect on how I feel about the music. Sometimes, honestly, I wonder why artists debut songs with videos - and wish they'd wait on that. Like, that gives you an extra chance to introduce the song to fans and potential fans.
― Ainsley James Gryffyd Lowbeer Holdsworth (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 March 2020 22:23 (five years ago)
digging the song at first listen. agreed that the video has a very short list of things to offer, but probably it suffers in comparison most to her 2009-2010 peak, and video budgets ain't what they used to be even then. but overall the song feels kinda like, if this had been waiting in the wings as a third single for artpop i would have felt much better about where she was headed at that time. and in 2020, yeah it's very comfortably within her wheelhouse, but i'm okay with that as some kind of statement that we're not just going to be getting "shallow" variations from here on out.

― ufo, Friday, 22 May 2020 04:11 (five years ago)
Yeah it's good. As an Ariana fan, I find her part underwhelming — her vocal isn't recorded very well(?) — but the track does the (admirable) trick of feeling 20-25 secs. too short, leaving you wanting more.
― Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 04:34 (five years ago)
(Ariana sounds great on "Stuck With U" -- so whatever's up on this song, I assume it's not just that she has a bad mic at her home studio, or whatever.)
― Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 04:41 (five years ago)
(...plus, the Gaga song was recorded prior to the pandemic, duh. it’s like I’m forgetting there was a “before times.”)

Am hearing “Starlight” by Supermen Lovers.
Not really feeling this track, seems a bit basic for either of them, and Ariana sounds even more garbled than usual.

idk how to feel about this one. It's competent but it feels like it plays it excessively safe which is something I don't want or expect out of this collaboration.

A guy in the car next to me today was playing this song, and getting into it (hand movements, etc.). It seems to really have some heat, wonder how high it will debut on the chart.
― Inadequate grass (morrisp), Sunday, 24 May 2020 21:25 (five years ago)
could very well debut at #1, as numerous songs have this year. the more important question is whether it will show staying power beyond that, since some of the year-to-date's number-one debuts might not
i think the song is just okay so i am not the best judge of its commercial prospects. it is definitely better than "stupid love" tho
lmao at the misheard lyric, even after knowing that was incorrect i still couldn't figure out what the real lyric was until looking it up!!
― dyl, Sunday, 24 May 2020 22:12 (five years ago)
I am sort of disappointed that after Joanne (which I really liked), Gaga seems to be sort of aesthetically retreating. But I’m not a Little Monster, maybe this move hits the sweet spot for her core fans.
― Inadequate grass (morrisp), Sunday, 24 May 2020 22:20 (five years ago)
any ariana song is gonna go no 1... she just did it last week. i think it's a good song personally and will have staying power at the top of the chart. it was a very well chosen feature by gaga.
i don't necessarily consider the song safe ... it does feel a bit fossilized w/ the drop and all but i think the time was right for a back to basics record for her after the artpop-joanne b2b. "shallow" + star is born made it cool to like her again, in that sense i think she's already accomplished the difficult part. following it up w/ a feel good party-ish kinda record that's like, "remember when we all loved me" w/ a few new twists makes a lot of sense to me. also think it's when her songwriting is at its best.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 25 May 2020 01:36 (five years ago)

following it up w/ a feel good party-ish kinda record that's like, "remember when we all loved me" w/ a few new twists makes a lot of sense to me.I feel you on this. I guess I was hoping she’d “take it to another level,” but that’s probably an unreasonable thing to expect from any artist.

Rain on Me debuted at #1, week 2 dropped to #5, week 3 dropped to #10.
― skip, Thursday, 18 June 2020 00:27 (five years ago)
that's pretty good for a song launched to #1 based overwhelmingly on pent-up hype, a simultaneous track/video premiere, and a plainly charts-driven digital retail strategy. like, the trajectories of a couple others recently fitting that description:
1 - 12 - 15 - 16 - 17 - 22 - 25 (travis scott & kid cudi "the scotts")1 - 13 - 15 - 17 - 20 (ariana grande & justin bieber "stuck with you")
all are being buoyed somewhat by airplay gains, even those for which direct consumption (sales/streams) is running out of steam fast. they could all eventually find a real mass audience, but i wouldn't count on it. of the three, i'd say "rain on me" may be the likeliest to actually become a 'real' hit
