Long as you're humPOLL, let you be the king of jungle: Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension

It's always sounded great to my ears but its dank + twitchy + pervasive anxiety somehow feels even better suited to the present day than the much more chill pre-millennial day of its release.

So far today, I've listened to this and like three Ornette Coleman albums so I'm naturally just mellow as hell rn.

Lake Meat (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 17:55 (five years ago)

beeing late to Maxinquaye and Nearly God, here's my favourite Tricky record since day one

saw him in this tour; altough he played a lot of material soon to appear on AWDF. Martina still there wholeheartedly, Perry Melius drumming af, Tricky in his most raucuous mode. it was great and loud

Vent, Christian Sands, Tricky Kid, Makes Me Wanna Die, Ghetto Youth, damn... could vote for all of them

voted Bad Dreams

gaudio, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 18:54 (five years ago)

love this album. voting Bad Dream too. "his head fell apart like a block of solid ice"

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 19:01 (five years ago)

I saw this tour too - the band played in near total darkness. The first six tracks on this album are all amazing, but "Tricky Kid" might get my vote.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

yeah this tour was great

Voted Makes Me Wanna Die

Could vote for anything on the first side -- his most sustained song suite. It falls apart in the last half but I love "Lyrics of Fury."

NAKED N FAMOUS

andrew m., Tuesday, 3 March 2020 20:35 (five years ago)

One could argue that it deliberately falls apart in the last half. It's all skittery, paranoid, barely-rhythmic mumbled mantras as we slide into the entropic decay of Y2K.

Lake Meat (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 20:35 (five years ago)

then we get more mumbles, toxic fumes, and bone machines on Angels with Dirty Faces

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 20:37 (five years ago)

is it martina on "bad dreams" too? think so?

andrew m., Tuesday, 3 March 2020 20:48 (five years ago)

yes

I love this album. Sonically 'Makes Me Wanna Die' is an outlier but it's so beautiful (avant-asmr, headphones!) it deserves a vote. Best Tricky album by quite a margin for me.

If I hadn't voted it would have been a 3 way tie, which might have been a better result.

great top 3

DJP, Friday, 13 March 2020 14:52 (five years ago)

This album and There's a Riot Goin' On make a great matched pair for me.

I distinctly remember being absolutely blown away the first time I heard “makes me wanna die”

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 23 October 2021 03:23 (three years ago)

It’s the first Tricky song I heard via a napster download and loved it. It wasn’t labeled as a remix but it was in fact “the weekend mix” - which is by the Stereo MCs iirc - so when I heard the original one years lager it took me quite some time to get used to it.

Anyways, if the second half of the album was half as good as the first it would probably be better than Maxinquaye. I think he precipitated himself by releasing Nearly God and this one as different albums. If you take some of the best songs off of each album you get one of the best trip hop albums of all time.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 October 2021 15:53 (three years ago)

I can’t remember in which other thread I posted but my picks would be the first half of pmt and some select songs from nearly god:

1. Vent
2. Christiansands
3. Tricky Kid
4. Bad Dreams
5. Makes me wanna die
6. Together Now
7. Poems
8. I be the prophet
9. Black coffee
10. … I sing for you

... i love the second half of this record

It's bad mood ably presented.

I coincidentally no kidding bought this on CD for £1.09 last week, I'm not getting out of bed tomorrow without listening. I had it on TAPE at the time, I recall the singles (at least here) went Christiansands -> Tricky Kid -> She Makes Me Wanna Die which fucksake rearranged my mind that year. Then the album yeah whatever after that, but I think I'm more open to it now

The Speak Of The Mearns (Jonathan Hellion Mumble), Sunday, 24 October 2021 21:18 (three years ago)

also bought Nearly God last week, also unrelated a Jovanotti 90-95 best of, my brother was round and we got quite maudlin and reminiscent, I've had a fucked up old school week and Maxinquaye and a couple of 883 albums were all we had to hand so I'm rectifying

The Speak Of The Mearns (Jonathan Hellion Mumble), Sunday, 24 October 2021 21:23 (three years ago)

Nearly God is one of my favorite albums of the '90s.

otm, it's super cool.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 October 2021 21:33 (three years ago)

Wait, I'm thinking of Pre-Millennium Tension. Doesn't matter, they're both super cool.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 October 2021 21:33 (three years ago)

I noticed tonight that the wah-wah electric violin on "Bad Dream" sounds like it might have been taken from (or inspired by) "Plain Truth" by Gentle Giant. The flanged jazz guitar on "Bad Things" also makes me think of Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light by Divine Styler.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 24 October 2021 23:05 (three years ago)

"Piano" is an amazing closer.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 October 2021 23:16 (three years ago)

Nearly God is not on US Spotify, will have to dig out the CD.

Typo? Negative! (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 24 October 2021 23:29 (three years ago)

Channel 4 aired a great live set from Shepherds Bush that is excerpted in the official dvd but unfortunately not completely included. Has the band playing a semi krautrock sounding trance rock and Tricky himself looking absolutely possessed at times.
Awesome video.
I did find myself listening to PMT more than Maxinquaye when I had it in the late 90s. Also looking out for late 90s live sets and not finding them for ages. Think it took me until I joined dime to get hold of several which proceeded to disappear when a hard drive crashed. Them and some Baker era Mercury Rev.
Anyway there is both live video and audio footage from the band sounding like this lp or possibly better dating from 97-8.

I'm not in the US, but in my country it's available under the artist Nearly God, not Tricky
