For me it was Purple Mountains (albums poll) and Blood Incantation (metal poll), both of which I probably played about 15 or 20 times throughout the year. I tend to burn out on album after 20 or so listens.

enochroot, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:45 (five years ago)

mine was the Underworld Drift series so this is kind of a difficult question

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:48 (five years ago)

Mine was Purple Mountains and I probably listened around 15 times - more to individual songs. In my 20s, this would probably have been more like 50 times, at a guess.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:52 (five years ago)

6-10 times all the way through. But my favorite tracks I heard a lot more.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:53 (five years ago)

Wilderun for me and comfortably into 21-50. I tend to do that when an album really connects

Wild guess: 20-30 times

interesting idea for a poll. My guess would be in the high teens for me

Yeah, pre-spotify the listen count was undoubtedly higher for me. These days, I find myself listening to so much different stuff that, even for albums I really like, I might only revisit them once or twice... it's just too easy to keep moving on to thing that I just read a review about.

Pre-Napster was even higher, because you had to plunk down real money for an album, which necessarily limited the size of your collection. If you paid $16.98 for a CD, you were gonna listen to the shit out of the CD. And if you didn't like it, you kept listening until you found something to like.

jamila woods! prob 11-20 and rising

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:06 (five years ago)

Voted 21-50, and probably listened to half a dozen albums that many times - Mountain Goats, TNP, Floating Points, Richard Dawson, Sharan vE, Weyes Blood.

too true, ive been trying to avoid this last year by just focusing on listening to my solid locked-in '19 faves but I still ended up listening to my fave album of '19 (Rustin Man) in full about 10 times

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:53 (five years ago)

Oh Sees' Face Stabber, nine times. I've been keeping track since 2012 and my favorite of the year consistently garners 9-11 full listens. I'm not sure if tracking this has made the figure a self-fulfilling prophesy, but that's how it's been. Most years my most-listened-to album is from the year in question, but twice it has been a back catalogue discovery: 2015 (Blue Öyster Cult's debut, 11) and last year (Akiko Yano's Tadaima, 10). At the end of 2018, I realized the #1 was going to be an old favorite I'd been revisiting (Lindstrøm and Christabelle) unless I played the new Beach House one more time, so that time I made an artificial intervention. Silly? Yes. I enjoyed it, so it was fine.

I’m terrible about this, probably 3-5. Trying to do better, I’ve listened to most of the songs on the new bad bunny 3-4 times already.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 5 March 2020 04:22 (five years ago)

I must’ve listened to Destroyer 20’times this year already. And Caribou is probably on 10 after only 6 days.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 5 March 2020 07:00 (five years ago)

floating points, cracking 50

Maja Ratkje - Sult. I said 21-50, and on the high end of that, but don't really know. I played it a bunch on free Spotify before buying the CD, then played it over and over in the car.

Sund4r, Thursday, 5 March 2020 11:51 (five years ago)

tinashe's songs for you. at least 11-20, but prob more?

Nourry, Thursday, 5 March 2020 11:55 (five years ago)

think about 50 on that one for me, so I'm going to vote that. It was my #2. Like frogbs, the 6 hour Underworld "album" was my #1... I've probably heard my favourite "episodes" from that about 50 times.

maffew12, Thursday, 5 March 2020 12:23 (five years ago)

11 times front-to-back. Intemporel by Sarah Davachi & Ariel Kalma, released in May but I didn’t find out about it till October

honky wonk badonkadonk (crüt), Thursday, 5 March 2020 12:48 (five years ago)

Mine was The Highwomen. I haven't taken the CD out my car's stereo since I got it six months ago and it's playing anytime I don't have NPR on, most recently last night.

I voted 21-50, but it's possibly more.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 March 2020 13:10 (five years ago)

I listened to Jaimie Branch’s Fly Or Die II at least 15 times, maybe more, partly because it blew me away instantly and partly because I wrote a major feature on her (for the Norwegian magazine Jazznytt) and also wrote about it for The Wire and Stereogum, so about half of those were homework listens.

enochroot, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 11:59 (five years ago)

going off last.fm, not that many.

the easy answer = if we're dividing up scrobbles, i listened to the wolf whistle album 8 times.

the confusing and more accurate answer = young guv's "guv i" from august and "guv ii" from october were later repackaged as "guv i and ii" in november so i'm not sure if i should count those separately or combine them. i guess 8 would also be the approximate answer or close enough.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 12:58 (five years ago)

i think i re-listened to my favorites from 2018 and especially 2016 a lot more than 2019.

Voted 11-20, going by the average number of spins per track according to my last.fm.

My two favourite and most-played albums of last year, Burna Boy’s African Giant and Samthing Soweto’s Isphithiphithi, both averaged 15 plays per track (ranging between 8 and 33, and 7 and 44 plays respectively).
My top album of 2018, Simmy’s Tugela Fairy now averages 24 (ranging 16 to 40).

As for literally playing an album all the way through, in the intended order? Two or three times tops early on maybe. After that I tend to go for individual tracks or longer or shorter selections most of the time, even if the album is “of a piece” (the Simmy def qualifies as such).
