Have to vote "Born to be Wild", 'cos way back in the day, when I was in college, I remember walking by the frats on party night and hearing this one blasting a lot. But Steppenwolf are abominable. I can't remember the songs, but I remember getting a truck stop tape in college and thinking the whole thing was horrible. "Magic Carpet Ride" is just bland.

Can we all agree that "The Pusher" is actually great?

Steppenwolf rules. "Born To Be Wild" is easily one of the top 20 guitar riffs of the 60s, and the feedback fade-in on "Magic Carpet Ride" is better than the Velvet Underground's entire catalog.

i don't hate either of these. voted btbw bc it's a little more turgid than carpet ride. and it makes me laugh when carpet ride goes from the instrumental break right back into the chipper YOU DON'T KNOW-AH

Heard Carpet Ride on the AM recently. Was trying to think of other songs that turn 180º before hitting the main riff right at the fadeout.

But then I pulled up into the driveway and forgot about that by the time I got inside the house.

Like "Magic Carpet Ride," long tired of "Born to Be Wild"; consider "The Pusher" much worse than either.

there were many hot girls I went to high school with who, like many of my peers in general in the 1980s, were all about "60s music rools, everything else drools." I was friends with and wanted very badly to have sex with one very pretty young lady who did not like the Grateful dead, but pretty much was nuts about the usual suspects: Beatles, Stones, Dylan, S&G, and so on…one night, I drove around with her while she insisted on playing the two recordings upon which this poll is premised repeatedly, over and over for over two hours…I didn't like these songs beforehand, but I have since viscerally despised them, strongly disliked every Steppenwolf song I have heard, and my desire to conjoin with the young lady was extinguished. Neanderthal where in the world are you experiencing this, because in 40+ years of bar-going I don't think I've ever heard it covered. (Ideally it would have a for-real Hammond organ with a Leslie, and it would rule.)

BTBW has a great riff and proto-metal lyrics. MCR is not 1/4 as funky as it wants to be and the lyrics are twaddle. I never want to hear either song again (I was in a band in high school that covered both songs) but there’s only one real answer here.

Can't actually remember Magic Carpet Ride (it wasn't a hit in the UK), but Born To Be Wild is fake biker rock perfection, anyone who hates it has probably never mounted a silver steed in the first place.

Both are awesome. I'll be withholding my patronage.

Both are very funny. MCR is probably funnier.

"Hush" by Deep Purple is probably funnier than both of these.
