i'm currently obsessed with this brasilian disco-funk album from 1981. the playing is incredible, and every song on it is catchy and perfect. kind of bit of a city-pop feel

yeah, his Leon Ware-ish phase. lovely lovely rec
imo, he was even better, like hungrier, before he moved to the US, sick with the military dictatorship. Previsão do Tempo from 73, is his 70's apex. more bossa-funk than disco, and prominently featuring cuíca and berimbau, which i'm a sucka for both; his songwritting and playing there really stands out
― gaudio, Sunday, 22 March 2020 04:13 (six years ago)
nice thx for the rec, i wasn't sure where to go next in his discography. i listened to some of the 60s samba stuff and let spotify run for a while after listening to vontade and it was all excellent
― flopson, Sunday, 22 March 2020 06:47 (six years ago)
Previsao do Tempo is my favorite of his albums as well, Azymuth are the backing band on most of it Their other (mostly instrumental) collaborations from the same year have a similar prog-funk vibe, perhaps especially the Fly Cruzeiro jingles that LITA reissued but also O Fabuloso Fittipaldi OST. the first track on it, the one ironically extolling the virtues of Flamengo FC, is with O Terço I think, if that's more to your liking check out Vento Sul which is also magnificent.
IMO everything from Samba 68 up to his Brazilian Sesame Street album is essential.

Going with the flow of the recommendations here, and everything I’ve listened to is indeed excellent: Vontade de Rever Você (sorta hooked on “Garimpando”, also: great sleeve, does he look hot or what?); Samba ‘68; and Previsão do Tempo, which I’m currently engrossed in.btw, for Spotifyers and possibly other streamers:Previsão do Tempo is not on Spotify as a stand-alone album, but it’s disc 9 on the so-called Box Marcos Valle, which I assume is the 2011 11-CD box set Valle Tudo that covers - all? some? haven’t investigated further yet - of his 1963-1974 work.

His self-titled album from 1983 is basically a continuation of the boogie funk of Vontade de Rever Voce, and "Estrelar" is one of his best-known songs. So OP check that out if you haven't already. From the early 70s don't miss Garra and Vento Sul.
― J. Sam, Monday, 23 March 2020 12:54 (six years ago)
One of the most consistent Brazilian artists out there and even more then some of his more acclaimed contemporaries. And yeah, his disco/funk period is extremely underrated, I actually spun this record this morning before seeing this post. Bought it when it was reissued during RSD. Think it was my only RSD purchase that year.
― Thebunk, Monday, 23 March 2020 13:11 (six years ago)
I listened to this in spotify yesterday evening,v enjoyable
― COVID and the Gang (jim in vancouver), Monday, 23 March 2020 18:11 (six years ago)
I also really recommend his 1998 album Nova Bossa Nova. Late period albums by most artists can cause reason for suspicion but this album is really excellent and I think gets overlooked in his catalog.

lol, i tried to google that '73 record and i got a bunch of brazilian sites trying to give me the weather in portland, but in portuguese

From the early 70s don't miss Garra and Vento Sul.
Garra is not my favorite album of his, though it has some great stuff like Wanda Vidal. That album cover, though!

The video for Estrelar is also ridiculous.
― Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 00:50 (six years ago)
a very good read about his 79-82 period:

No, I’m in the Netherlands. You searched for Box Marcos Valle, right?I did notice that that subdivision-per-disc thing is only visible on desktop Spotify, not on mobile. Garra is disc 7, Vento Sul disc 8.Some of these albums have dedicated playlists btw, maybe try your luck there?
― No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 12:34 (six years ago)

Hadn't seen that one. Wow, that's a whole other level of ridiculousness.
― Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 04:02 (six years ago)
Marcos has a pretty set up on the beach judging by the Estrelar video.

Yeah, it doesn't show up on mobile or desktop. There are a few playlists but most of the tracks are missing.
I discovered this album when was available on Spotify in the US a few years ago -- the issue with the yellow cover. But it fell off a few months later and hasn't come back since. A shame because it's an absolute masterpiece.
I need to check out the Ware collab a little more deeply -- while I'm not a massive fan of Musical Massage, I Want You is my favorite Gaye record.
― Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 16:36 (six years ago)

I need to get on his most recent work. He did a record with Adrian Younge and I think his latest is an anti-Bolsonaro album?

there's a duet w/ Leon (some unfished demo from 79 recovered, re-recorded, idk) that is just stunning on his last record. whole album's absolutely triumphant

anyone catch the recent live shows?
― flopson, Thursday, 26 September 2024 18:07 (one year ago)
I saw him live with Azymuth a few years ago and that was easily one of the greatest concerts of my life.
― Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 26 September 2024 18:20 (one year ago)
Joshua Minsoo Kim interviewed him
I had the privilege of interviewing the legendary Marcos Valle. We talked about working with Leon Ware, his new album Túnel Acústico (out on @FarOutRecs), and his undying passion for music. It's what has driven him his whole life, and it really shines through in this convo. https://t.co/zc8rjfMTOo— Joshua Minsoo Kim (@misterminsoo) September 27, 2024

He was absolutely unreal in Portland the other night. Hot shit band and he was in unfashionably great condition for 81.
― Deverly (Bangelo), Friday, 27 September 2024 05:12 (one year ago)
Unfathomably though the alternative is intriguing

what’s he playing on this tour?
― flopson, Friday, 27 September 2024 15:21 (one year ago)

i meant material wise. anything from this album?
― flopson, Sunday, 29 September 2024 16:46 (one year ago)
xp heh
here's a recent setlisthttps://www.reddit.com/r/bossanova/comments/1flo6u9/i_met_marcos_valle/
and here's a complete showhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcomqeVBLIU
he's playing at an '80s-retro roller rink in NYC, I'm tempted to go even though it's in Bushwick and it's $50 and it's going to be full of underage Adrian Younge fans. I probably won't go.

On the plus side, Tropicalia in Furs Joel is the DJ
― Deflatormouse, Sunday, 29 September 2024 16:52 (one year ago)
ain't knocking the kids it is fucking awesome to see teenagers so excited about seeing Marcos Valle that they are snatching up the setlists tbc but ugh @ the thought of being the old person in the room
― Deflatormouse, Sunday, 29 September 2024 17:14 (one year ago)
Valle's 81, don't worry, eh. thx for posting that show, ace rhythm section + his wife has such a lovely voice, everything's so good. man's a storyteller too, isn't he? i would def catch them if i was close by
― +subtle (gaudio), Sunday, 29 September 2024 17:55 (one year ago)
Valle v obv has access to a daily supply of the blood & semen of teen boys and doesn't count
― Deflatormouse, Sunday, 29 September 2024 19:00 (one year ago)
that sounds amazing (the nyc roller rink show, not the blood and semen of teen boys)
― flopson, Monday, 30 September 2024 14:06 (one year ago)

― flopson, Monday, 30 September 2024 17:33 (one year ago)
Guy I know who's a musician saw the Oakland show, said it was magical and a half. I think I had something else conflicting with that date but now I'm very sad to have missed it!
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 September 2024 17:47 (one year ago)
xp sadly no. there are a lot of shows right now! also seeing Nilufer Yanya then Mdou Moctar all within one week, and that's with me entirely missing Pop Montreal
― rob, Monday, 30 September 2024 21:31 (one year ago)
