New EP is incredible, really soothing sophistipop that's been a great calm over the past few weeks.

Also "Blue Pedro" is just the best

boxedjoy, Monday, 6 April 2020 06:49 (five years ago)

big fan of the stuff he's done with laura groves - 'freedom of the floor' by nautic, laura's solo records

ymo sumac (NickB), Monday, 6 April 2020 08:22 (five years ago)

Loving the new EP. Had no idea Nautic was him & Laura Groves

groovypanda, Monday, 6 April 2020 08:35 (five years ago)

That "Only Over You" Fleetwood Mac cover Nautic did for the Deek covers comp was amazing, IMO

Cysteine Chapo (Craig D.), Monday, 6 April 2020 16:53 (five years ago)

Hula is great but “We had a good time” is the highlight for me. Love those drums.

I don’t know if it’s been discussed in other threads but his covers are worth listening to and the “pop not slop” ongoing list in which he invites guests and himself to post what they consider perfect pop songs:

Can we rename this thread to bullion / westerman? At this point, Bullion's involvement and influence is such that it could almost be considered a duo.

Anyways, there's not a Westerman thread, and I don't think there would be much participation so I wont be making one, but ILM is seriously missing out on him. The Mark Hollis / Talk Talk vibe seems like it was designed to be loved around here.

New album out, if you haven't checked him out please do so. At the very least check Confirmation and Blue Comanche.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 June 2020 16:16 (four years ago)

confirmation is an excellent song, looking forward to checking out the alb later today

voodoo chili, Friday, 5 June 2020 16:42 (four years ago)

the pop-not-slop posts from Deek every day are always a delight

boxedjoy, Friday, 5 June 2020 22:21 (four years ago)

this Westerman album is dreamy, perfect music for a Sunday morning

boxedjoy, Sunday, 7 June 2020 10:11 (four years ago)

yeah it's a consistent vibe, very tasteful. i think the pre-release tracks are still my favorites (blue comanche, the line, confirmation), along with the gorgeous two ending tracks (title track and float over).

ACAB for cutie (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 June 2020 16:55 (four years ago)

love the westerman album, probably deserves its own thread. similar sophisti vibes to last year's nilufer yanya album, just without the distortion

ufo, Friday, 12 June 2020 12:15 (four years ago)

Yeah, this is my first Westerman, but it's good! I'm getting more These New Puritans vibes than Hollis/TT. And I can't help but think of Arthur Russell at times, his voice sounds quite like it (like on Blue Comanche). I'm def going to check his previous albums as well.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 12 June 2020 14:06 (four years ago)

I'd also recommend the covers albums that DEEK Recordings put out every so often - 4 Down, Covered In Gloria and Extraodinary Renditions

boxedjoy, Friday, 12 June 2020 14:29 (four years ago)

The new Westerman LP is a real grower. Definitely getting the Mark Hollis feel but also Arthur Russell in parts and Peter Gabriel. The signed white vinyl copy is sounding nice too.

xxp i thought this was his debut?

Awesome

I'm very proud of my first album, which came out in 1969. But @westermanmusic's first album is much better than my first album! It's one of my favourites at the moment, and of the year so far.

Thank you to Westerman for talking to me on this week's #RocketHour on @applemusic 🚀 pic.twitter.com/vwQGfXMEST

'your hero is not dead' by westerman

flopson, Saturday, 22 August 2020 05:39 (four years ago)

It's mentioned upthread. It sounds similar because Bullion produces, and I think also co-writes now and then with Westerman.

the westerman album has grown on me so much. i had to get over how similar to arthur russell the use of his voice is in places, but it's definitely its own thing. i agree with the peter gabriel comparison upthread more than the mark hollis comparison, the synths are kept synthetic despite the kind of rarified spiritual tone achieved on 'blue comanche.'

new Laura Groves single is excellent but she doesn't have her own thread so this one will have to do

boxedjoy, Friday, 22 April 2022 20:41 (three years ago)

(because they've worked together and shared session musicians, not because I picked a thread at random)

boxedjoy, Friday, 22 April 2022 20:41 (three years ago)

bit more goth than her usual sound, i like it

As mentioned elsewhere, Bullion's produced the new Ben Howard album and it's really good.

Moka mentioned Arthur Russell but also some Westerman vibes on tracks like this one:

love bullion but was let down by the single

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 17:20 (one year ago)

yeah single is underwhelming, he can do better

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2024 04:40 (one year ago)

not sure I love the song as a standalone, but the way their voices combine in the verses is totally pressing my prefab sprout buttons (even though the chorus sounds more like deacon blue)

the album's out to press and on first listen, it's a huge disappointment
formess, and without the sonic inventiveness that made me so enjoy his work as recently as with Ben Howard

*formless

sean gramophone, Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:14 (one year ago)

World_Train is quite nice. Most of the collabs on here though are extremely muted. It's all very much apiece. Like a sepia-tinted version of Hot Chip, which isn't to say that's a bad thing, rather it makes me think of a long train journey through Europe with the scenery whizzing past faster than I can quite focus on

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Thursday, 2 May 2024 11:35 (one year ago)

album is just a nice vibe the whole way through, it's solid even if it's nothing special

ufo, Thursday, 2 May 2024 12:49 (one year ago)

both otm, “world train” and “40 waves” are the ones that rise above background pleasantness for me (“40 waves” is perhaps the most “long train journey through europe” song on the album haha)

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Thursday, 2 May 2024 13:58 (one year ago)

As distinctly mid as this album is, world_train will almost definitely make my EOY
