I posted this on a similar thread earlier this week, but it applies here as well:

Sorry to interrupt, but could people please take the trouble to provide track info when they’re posting YouTube and similar links?

It’s such a bummer to read older threads like these and find that most of the links are broken (because they tend to), so you’re basically left with... not very much at all.

Happened to me again the other day while skimming some old Piano House threads.

(I might yet make this my own sic-like mission on ILM)

George Michael - Monkey (Jam & Lewis mix)

I guess there's a line here between an extended mix (with lots of split-track deconstruction, rhythmic vamping and artfully applied reverb) - and a top-down remake-style remix?

I'm not sure where this one sits on that line but I have it on a 12" so I'm going with it

umsworth (emsworth), Friday, 10 April 2020 08:26 (five years ago)

every Tom Moulton 12" version ever.

My posts thusfar:
01. Love And Rockets - No Big Deal (12" Remix)
02. Deee Lite - Groove is in the Heart (12'' Extended Bootsified to the Nth Degree)
03. Grace Jones - She's Lost Control (long version)
04. Blur - Girls and Boys (Pet Shop Boys Remix)
05. Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It-Talk Talk (Extended 12" Mix)
06. Bill Withers - Lovely Day (1977 Disco Purrfection Version)
07. Happy Mondays - Loose Fit (12" Version)
08. Depeche Mode - Everything Counts (In Larger Amounts)
09. Echo & the Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar (12" Mix)

Apologies if there are a million similarly themed threads out there - I couldn't find them, so I started this one.

26. imaginary bodyguard (Pillbox), Friday, 10 April 2020 18:52 (five years ago)

That Grace Jones version is killer! There's many better Depeche Mode 12" versions though it's been eons since I've heard them. I would recommend Echo's 12" version of "Bring On The Dancing Horses" as my favorite of theirs.

Also - Scritti Politti - Perfect Way (Way Perfect mix). And something from ABC off of the 12"s from "How To Be A Zillionaire".

I swore off remixes sometime in the 90s but found the total makeover remixes of stuff like Wild Beasts are astounding.

no, by “similar” I just meant any type of ILM thread where people post (especially older) tracks around a given theme.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 10 April 2020 20:15 (five years ago)

Oh god, the Urban Mix of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is awful - unnecessary sax! Very 80s. Tears For Fears 12" mixes we're usually just extended versions which were just that - more of a great song, with an extra verse or repeated section. I have a soft spot for lots of those though as I've gotten older the single versions tend to be definitive most of the time.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 10 April 2020 20:16 (five years ago)

No sax on the extended version. But you're right, it's just, ah, extended. I could listen to the refrain all night. So.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 10 April 2020 20:18 (five years ago)

who is this generation’s Stuart price?

cracking suggestion.
i would add Ewan Pearson to that list as well.
his extended versions are always spot on.

One of my absolute favorite ephemeralities of music is the extended or 12" mix!

A more recent one that is 100% in the classic 80s style is the long mix of "The Sea is So Quiet" by the mighty Trembling Blue Stars:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYEdw24zNaw

Not going to post it because it's a song most of you fine folks probably already know, but one of my absolute favorite extended mixes is "Fascination Street", by the Cure of course. It's nearly ten minutes long!

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Saturday, 11 April 2020 03:29 (five years ago)

also I am no sort of vinyl supremacist but listening to a banging extended mix on a good 12" pressing is a pretty unbeatable experience

xp Yeah, the Disco Purrfection remixes (as on Bill Withers above) are unofficial recent-day YouTube-only affairs. I'm not a big fan of them, but The Reflex does some stunning work, strictly using original track elements only, some of which have even made it onto vinyl. Here's my favourite, of Marvin Gaye "Got To Give It Up" - I play it out a lot.

as mentioned above, ABC had this down for a minute in the mid to late 80's.

there were some nice PWL affiliated mixes that added a bit of life to the Alphabet City singles, like the Miami Mix of "Smokey":

the Sheer Chic Mix of "The Night You Murdered Love":
https://youtu.be/w38QFWrZEyg

and the Monarchy Mix of "King Without a Crown":

And, not PWL-related, but, obviously the king of all ABC remixes, the Munich Disco Mix of "Be Near Me":

since patrick cowley has come up, gotta mention his "hills of katmandu" mix ... there's two versions of it. this is the less common and more complete of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv01sAxvmPw

the disco purrfection mix of "a lovely day" didn't much impress me. it's just "a lovely day" but longer, right?

Kate (rushomancy), Saturday, 11 April 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

so what’s this disco purrfection thing, dude doing edits and posting them on YouTube?

the original "hills of katmandu" is much better than cowley's mix, which unfortunately seems to be the one modern electronic music fans who are enamored by cowley default to

disco purrfection is one of many youtube accounts posting custom edits of dance hits. you'll often see them pop up toward the top of search results when seeking out the actual 12" versions

reasonable minds may differ on this issue

i'm checking out the discosession mix right no, in porn mode as has increasingly become my habit. the recommendation sidebar is particularly interesting on this one, consisting of:

The Disco Purrfection guy comes up in my YouTube recommendations ALL THE TIME, not even exaggerating. He gets shedloads of views for just needlessly extending stuff, without adding anything fresh to it.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 11 April 2020 22:07 (five years ago)

it seems to be unspeakably lame.. and the fact that he’s making YouTube $$$ from it...

brimstead, Saturday, 11 April 2020 22:08 (five years ago)

obviously basic functional edits are fine but I’m not sure what the point of making them strictly for monetized videos is. Oh right $$$$$$

brimstead, Saturday, 11 April 2020 22:14 (five years ago)

i'd love to hear more about good contemporary remixers / club producers working with pop stars. like stuff on par with maurice fulton working with roisin murphy.

the reflex has some genuinely great edits. his take on "groove is in the heart" with bootsy and q-tip is such a good teaser, saves the chorus til the end. love his version of bowie's "golden years" too, even more than the original. worth the 35 bucks or whatever to get the whole bandcamp discogs if you're in the business of playing weddings or the like.

every once in a while there's an ok to good remix that comes through the ad-infested site that is dirty remixes and there are some "mp3 pool" sites out there that you can pay to access that have the souped up club remixes too. but a lot of that stuff just dumps on the club hype digital fx without adding any nuance and so often the originals are better. i haven't been diving around that stuff for a while now but i bet "don't start now" has a million remixes on those kinds of sites and none of them top the original.

i sometimes wonder to what extent remixes of current/mainstream dance material being made available digitally rather than thru 12" and physical promos imperils the likelihood of these club remixes, even the more popular ones, surviving in the long term

according to this site, a service by one of those promo companies that (purportedly) tracks what's (supposedly) getting played in the nightlife, the most popular remix of "don't start now" is indeed one of those mixes that seem to be available primarily if not exclusively on those digital pool services (i just listened to it, and it's not v different from the original -- i imagine the original could well be more popular than any of its remixes)

dyl, Sunday, 12 April 2020 03:17 (five years ago)

a lot of noteworthy 12" mixes from that format's heyday are not available as digital downloads or on the streaming services, but at least they survive on whatever physical product is still floating around
